I remember those jump suits the old guys used to wear. I'm 60 and I'm talking about when I was a boy. Seeing you wearing one of those cracked me up and PROVES you are genuinely living old school bassin to the max! You're a living relic and glad to see a younger guy appreciate the history of bass fishing. Love what you're doing..
Try out using True Turn worm hooks and 7½ or 10-inch ribbon tail worms’ fished weight less on 8 to 12 pound mono. Cast the worm out and let sit and just let it slowly sink to the bottom not moving it at all. Just keep your eye on the line. Best time to use it is when water is flat and calm. If you see any movement slowly tighten up and see if a bass is on the end. Very often the line will move slowly away. This works with suspended bass and bass in shallow water too. The mono will hold the worm suspended off the bottom. When a bass comes close to investigate the worm moves from the bass displacing the water around the worm. The bass nearly always eats the worm and you never need to do anything but watch for the strike.
@@RetroBassin Once you catch a few fish doing this trick it gets real fun. The worm will suspend with the right size and weight hook. To make it go deeper you just pull a little on the line and it will fall deeper .by inches or little more. When you can’t get bites any other way this just works. This is when color really makes a difference. Some colors work better than others. I used Culprit Shad Green and black and copper to tone worms. You can slowly move the worm inches or feet but slow is the secret.
Man I really appreciate the spirit of this channel. Bass fishing had this wonderful goofiness when I was a kid. All those colors and weird lures that were clearly made up in someone's garage. Nowadays everybody takes it soooooo seriously. Everyone too cool to throw something in firetiger.
Hey Retro. I have a fewof those things. :-). After Action quit making them, my boss commissions a mold to be made so we could produce them and sell them at the shop I worked in as a kid. That was about '83. Nothing ever came of it but the memory of guys hoarding those baits and how effective they were is still cemented in my mind. And yes, half the time when I'd open a box that just came from the factory, the packages were all broken. We got in the habit of just removing them from the package and selling them out of a 3700 plano. As I remember, they came in 4 and 6 inch as well as a 3 inch grub. Great baits.
I caught bass on these breathing worms when I was a teenager, back in the day! The brown color is what I remember. I Texas-rigged them and dragged them along the bottom of a farm pond. They did seem to leave a small trail of bubbles on the surface as I retrieved them. I always thought that the air chambers gave them an interesting, soft feel and action that the bass may have liked. Thanks for the memory!
Oh man...awesome coveralls! Had an instant flashback when I saw those because my grandpa used to always wear these slate grey coveralls that looked almost exactly like yours when he would go fishing. I had totally forgotten about those! I had also forgotten about pistol grip rods until I started watching your videos. I know I used to use them all the time but now with two-handed rod butts I just can't imagine having used them! Awesome stuff as always!
I just stumbled across this channel a few days ago, love it! As a kid I remember having some worms that had little golf ball like pockets about halfway down the body, supposed to do the same as the ones you describe here. Can't for the life of me remember who they were from, though...keep up the great videos.
I fish with a Shmao Bantam 100 and a 6 foot Fenwick that I bought in the mid 70's. A year later I started using a black and sliver Culprit. Most people don't know that Culprit's are a real retroworm. Still use the same setup. Works as great now as it did 50 years ago.
I used to fish a lot more plastic worms in my younger days, especially Mann's Jelly Worms, Mann's Augertails, and baits by Gator Tail and Producto Lures. Never really tried the Action worms.
Have you ever fished GillRaker worms. We used to hammer the bass in the 80’s with those here in Kentucky. They had a chartreuse colored worm that was deadly. Wish I had some now.
You talked about Lews rods and reels! Awesome!!!! Thanks Retro Bassin! I’ve got a bunch of vintage Lews rods and reels for you to test but you have to let me join you on your Bass Tracker. lol
Yes, I still have my Lews rod and reel from 1977. Still works fine along with some breathing worms I have stashed away. Sure caught some bass with them.
my grandfather was telling me about a old lure from st. croix called the neon firefly. It actually had liquid mercury in the tip of the bait that created a glow to the clear nose of the bait. Im sure that's pretty rare to come by but id love to see you feature it.
@@RetroBassin before I forget..that Magforce sounded rough bro. Do you have the original bushings in that? I have bearings to slick that dude up. All of my old Daiwas have bearings now.
I actually came across pack of purple "The Seekers" worms from Bud & Marv's Bait Co., that you did a previous video on, in an old tackle box I picked up. Also had a four pack of 6" Creme Wiggle Baits. How about doing a video on the Slug-O? Not that old but still 80's kind of cool! You could also do another video on the Creme Scoundrel rigged worm. Enjoyed the video!!
Back in day the plastic Worm mtg. Were experimenting with different softness & scents . Creme were the Best & Bass Buster a close 2nd . Creme had the softest made hook sets easier but Bass Buster had the scent 🔥🤠😎 A
On my wife’s phone l love old lures jelly worms and flip tails l do whacky with flip tails and since your old school put a Burke buckshot worm on a jig and pig that tail floats and your pistol grip rod
RetroBassin no he sold swimming worm. Hard to find! Single hook with pre-rigged hook. Big bend in the worm, made it to spin. Looked cool and caught fish.
A Worm I would like to see you try but it's very hard to find is the original Mister Twister Sintipede. Not sure exactly how it's spelled but this Worm was a big Bass Magnet back in the day. They discontinued the original version when I was in my early teens, I'm in my mid 50's now but the purple and black were both dynamite
Just googled action breathing worms to see if they are available anywhere...guess not. Lost the biggest fish of my life on one (10+ in a strip pit in KY) using 10 lb test on a Zebco 1. I have probably 30 packs (I beat my fishing buddy to a store in Nashville back in the late 70's). Guess I'll bring some out next time -
On my wife’s phone hey they is another cool worm that l think came out of Texas it was called the cobra worm had a flat flared head just like the snake l would give it a little hop and it would drift or glide down caught bass on it
Maybe do something on a LITTLE GEORGE OR RAPALA & THE REELS THAT WERE REVELATORY THAT CHANGED FISHING FOREVER:LEWS SPEED SPOIL BBG1 ; SHIMONOL 1000: DIAWA PRO MAG
Is there any way I could get you to part with one of those breathing worms so I could make a mold to start making them ? I will send the original back to you and a hard master of the worm for your trouble .
Yessssss best theme song ever.
We need to do a live studio version!

I smoked 'em on the Action Worm last spring. Can't wait to get them out there again soon!
My old school favorite was the Jawtec Wacky Craw. Caught a lot of fish at night on that on Lake Fork in the mid 80's to early 90's.

BIG WAG WORMS, Riverside/Pradco 90's. If you ever do lizards, note the BIG FOOT, due to the vertical orientation of the tail.
Funny, the first bass I ever caught on a worm was on a black fliptail. If it wasn't for Bill.......
Those Fliptails are back in production! Check ‘em out on the Facebook.
I definitely will. Never forget that notorious "tick".....there he is😁
Woooow. Mind blown. Great bait that catches fish well, but the packaging was sub par, so it gets discontinued. That's somethin.
