Love the fact you're moving through albums in track order. The concept of Dark Side Of the Moon is as follows: the first side, tracks 1-5 is life cycle, from birth to death. The second half, tracks 6-10, is about the pressures of life. Money = greed, Us And Them = war and wealth vs poverty, Any Colour You Like is an instrumental scout choice and the illusion of choice (inspired by an ad that said "any colour you like, as long as it's black"), Brain Damage = mental health and insanity, Eclipse is the crescendo that brings everything together. Their other concept albums are 1975's Wish You Were Here (presence vs absence), 1977's Animals (inspired by Orwell's Animal Farm and puts people into the animal categories. Dogs are the ruthless cutthroat businessmen, pigs are the politicians and "leaders", sheep are the everyman), The Wall is a rock opera about a fictional rock star named Pink who goes insane and builds an emotional wall around himself to protect from pain and suffering. The first half are the bricks that build the wall, the second half is the result and repercussions of having built the wall. 1983's The Final Cut is about war, the veterans adjusting to life after the war, and the cultural and political divides leading to war. 1994's The Division Bell has a theme of communication and the lack thereof leading to breakdown of different types of relationships. Beyond that, the rest of the albums aren't conceptual outright, but all are mind blowing. They have 16 studio albums, 4 live albums and a few boxed sets which include a couple more live albums. Looking forward to your journey!

I first heard Pink Floyd in 1975 - I was 10 years old then - and this album. I'd been listening to music since I was a kid - my parents were discophiles - but this blew me away. I'd never heard anyone use such effects in music before - money clinking, helicopters flying, screaming... And I was amazed at how the songs fit together, how seamlessly they built on each other. Oh, my God! And you can imagine, of course, that I didn't speak a word of English, so I didn't understand a word - it wasn't until much later that I realized how deep and fantastic the lyrics were. It's one of my favourite albums. Obviously because it's so famous and epic (it's sold nearly 60 million albums continuously since then), but I also associate it with those first contacts with Pink Floyd, and it also reminds me that it's been fifty years - damn!
By the way - listen to the whole Wish You Were Here album later - my favourite - also a great experience!

For this album, it is the 4 “core” members of Pink Floyd:
    David Gilmour (guitar, vocals)
    Nick Mason (drums)
    Roger Waters (bass, vocals)
    Richard Wright (keyboards,vocals)

    Pink Floyd formed mid 60's
Syd Barrett (Lead Guitar / Vocals / lyrics)
Roger Waters (Bass Guitar / Vocals )
Richard Wright (Keyboards / Vocals )
    Nick Mason (Drums)
However by the end of the 60's Syds mental health and issues relating to drug abuse, left him unable to play reliably live.
To help cover for him, Dave Gilmour (Lead Guitar / Vocals) joined and Syd dropped out.
This meant that the album Meddle which preceeded The Dark Side of the Moon was the turning point for the band.
However they didn't forget their old friend and many tracks reference Syd, his mental health issues or his relationship with the music industry. (see Brain Damage / Eclipse DSOTM)
The album which followed DSOTM was called "Wish You Were Here" and this entire album is about Syd.
The Dark Side of the Moon, was an album that for us young teenagers was a WOW "so this is grown up music" Not about falling in love or how hot some chick looks, more like a "Bible for modern life"!

Those are electronic synthesizers being used in "On the Run". Fairly new for the time period. Pink Floyd was on the forefront of creating sounds never heard before in music that would later be adapted in everything from video games to movies and beyond. They are among the most influential bands in Rock history. I was a teenager when this album came out. This was crazy new. One of the first albums to be recorded in full quadraphonic surround sound. People were literally running out to buy new quad stereo systems just to properly listen to this album.
And BTW, if you were ever lucky enough to see them live, they did not skimp on the technology. They are perfectionists. All the sounds are meticulously reproduced in full quadraphonic surround sound through speakers that surround the entire arena or stadium. I saw them at Soldier Field in Chicago in '94 (Pulse) the sound of those synths travel in waves all around you front to back and side to side.. even seeming to pass overhead at times! With the sounds of the clocks and planes etc. Doesn't matter where you're sitting, you get the full quad effect. When many rock bands of this era played large stadiums you were almost guaranteed to lose or a muddy the sound. Not so with Pink Floyd. If anything it exceeded all expectations.

An EMS synth AKs was the instrument used to create those futuristic Erie sounds. The song "On the Run" represents the fear of flying and all the chaos inside of an airport in a kind of dream-like state. Richard Wright the keyboardist had a fear of flying and crashing.

There are always exactly enough vocals, but you have to adjust to the fact, every instrument has its own vocal.
Highly recommend having the lyrics to hand for those human vocals.
If you think of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as the Yin and Yang of Rock.
Psychodelic Progressive Rock and Blues Rock
Where Zeppelin sing about Love, relationships, betrayal and vikings!
Floyd take you on a journey into Sanity and Insanity, life and death, peace and war.

Yep, the only break on the album is the end of a side on the vinyl album. The sound effects are from a VCS 3. You really notice in this album that The Floyd frequently use non musical elements. That helps add depth to their songs. They also traditional instruments very creatively. Listen to the layers of guitar David Gilmour adds to this music.
My first time with DSOTM was an 8-track in the mid 70s in my car that I had outfitted with 6 speakers. They rear speakers had a booster and I cranked it up to 11. That's really the best way to listen to The Floyd. This album was the introduction to Pink Floyd for a lot of young people me included.
The album's theme details some of the stress and pressures on the band specifically. But it does have a general interpretation to life in general. The first track is a form of overture capturing clips from within the album that really only become apparent the second time you listen to the album. The song "Breathe" is a general observation of what difficulties life may bring you. "On The Run" Plays to the band members' fear of flying and the impending crash that back in the day was more common than today. That combined with "Time" lead you to "The Great Gig", i.e., death, that you already covered. Side 2 covers, in order, the stress of too much money, personal conflict, false choice, madness, and finally empathy. Life is tough it has its brightness and its darkness and through it all you have Roger Waters' empathy to push through the tough times as he has done. Now at 80 still performing.
    Their top 5 albums are:
    Meddle - 1971
The Dark Side Of The Moon - 1973
Wish You Were Here - 1975
    Animals - 1977
    The Wall - 1979

@@manchieffilms All Floyd albums are generally ranked from extraordinary to legendary. Being a prog band, people's opinions vary widely. Personally, I rank Meddle #4 ahead of Animals of their 15 studio albums. Meddle is 5 separate songs on one side and one long song on the other. "One Of These Days" is what a rock engine sounds like as it warms up. The balance of side one, for me, retains just a glimmer of that Syd Barrett whimsey with "San Tropez" and "Seamus". "Fearless" with the ghost of "You'll Never Walk Alone" in the background really starts to shape Roger Waters' "empathy" theme that carries through the next five albums until his voluntary departure in 1985. It is "Echoes" sprawling 23 minutes that is really the beginning of Pink Floyd's literal journey into the human psyche, that singularly consumes Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and even the aptly named "The Final Cut." The difficulty in reviewing Pink Floyd's music is finding the selection or selections that have clean breaks. Dark Side is really two long songs. Animals is easy. It is basically three songs but "Dogs" alone is 17 minutes. Otherwise I love your exploration of this band. One leads a diminished life not having experienced The Floyd.

🤔 Most of us heard Floyd on the radio. I remember my Grandma singing 'See Emily Play'. Didn't make the connection later to the Albums I heard in JHS & HS while doing homework (DSoTM, Mettle, The Wall). Then 😱 the shear panic of the PF breakup after the Beatles, MJ leaving the Jacksons & Lionel Richie left the Commodores! 🤩 David Gilmour's 'Momentary Lapse of Reason' Tour assured the Planet, "Pink Floyd didn't die". In fact its 2024 & 😌 I'm planning on getting Gilmour tickets for his New York shows! 🥰🐰

I first saw Pink Floyd in 1973 ( Old Sombrero, TampaFl, and the Omni in Atlanta ) I was 13. No adult supervision ( Dark Side ) and 3 times after. Last The Wall in 79. At least I believe we were pretty wasted. Favorite band of that period. Favorite guitarist, best drummer, best keyboard, great bass, even if Waters is a nut, great backup singers. Floyd is one of the bands that we'd camp out for tickets. Straight through... No idea if in one go. Fun fact, My friend Benny was the engineer on Comfortably Numb. Yes they have extremely deep lyrics.

Love your channel and these reactions. I'm sure I am late to the game in bringin this info, but here's some background.
Pink Floyd named themselves after two separate blues artists, combining a name from each. Their albums are made to be listened to from start to finish, as each song flows into the next flawlessly. Wish you were Here is an ode to their former singer Syd Barrett, who left the band as a result of mental health, and the facade of music business (Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar). Listen to the album from start to finish. Then listen to Dark Side of the Moon from start to finish... THIS ALBUM SHOULD NOT BE LISTENED TO SONG BY SONG!!! I promise you, this will be a delight. Same for the Wall and Animals. This will be an incredible journey, and to watch someone experience this for the first time is the BEST! Thank you for bringing us along.

First heard them in Jr. High (Middle School), around 1967--68 on vinyl and on the radio. Dark Side of the Moon was released in '73; I was just out of high school. Speaking of this album, you really need to hear the whole thing from start to finish; the songs blend together. The band was actually formed in 1965, when I was in 6th grade. That was a LONG time ago. I loved their music, of course. Must admit that although the early stuff (w/Syd Barrett) had its charm, I've always preferred the David Gilmour era. The original band had 4 members.
