  • We are expanding our understanding of Ancient Egyptian wrestling through studying the many images of wrestlers in action used throughout Egyptian art as well as compare and contrast with living traditions practiced in Africa and around the world. We are at the beginning phases of our journey but so far we have found that Egyptian wrestling bore striking similarities to many modern styles of grappling such as catch, belt, folk, Greco-roman, judo, etc. We have even found evidence in some cases for continued ground action!

    I wish I could hear commentators in the WWE say ”an Egyptian hip toss” like they say ”Russian leg sweep” and ”irish whip” when those moves are applied.

    Exactly what I was looking for! For years… As a Martial artist of African decent…it’s important for me to fully comprehend and preserve the contributions my ancestors made to the world of martial arts. (I don’t feel enough noise is made in this regard). Plus Wrestling is amongst my top 3 martial arts 👊🏾

    If so I had this idea about an art I'm practicing. Okinawan karate shorin Ryu. It has allot of similarities to the old pankration or pygmachia. Or even egyptian boxing. The art is called ti or "tee" it's an art that is shrouded in mystery. But it's VERY powerful. I was wondering if you knew anything about it.

      I actually started in Shorinryu as a kid! Even studied under Grandmaster Fusei Kisei in Okinawa

      @@DaMonStith that's cool it's cool to see another karate-ka of the old stuff out there. The reason I like karate is because I found that it has allot to do with the ocean and other elements but shoring ryu old school shotokan goju ryu ect all have characteristics of the ocean.

    Do you think that greco roman wrestling was influenced by Egyptian wrestling.

    • @DaMonStith
      @DaMonStith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not necessarily. Ideas travel up and down the Nile and across the Mediterranean. Wrestling is found around the world. It would be arrogant of me to make that assumption without evidence.

    • @andrerobinson3233
      @andrerobinson3233 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaMonStith Thats a reasonable statement. I only asked because of how connected egypt was to the greco-roman world for millenia. Both the greeks under Alexamder (and later the the Ptolemeys) and the Romans ruled Egypt for millenia. Furthermore Egyptian art and religion had an influence from before and after being conquered. Its not a great stretch to wrestling as having an influence as well.

      @@andrerobinson3233 Wrestling is not only as universal as the Bow but also the most ancient of all Martial Arts. For example, in modern Day Peru there are still Descendants of the Inkas that still wrestle like their Ancestors, Shuai Jiao in China, Sumo Wrestling in Japan, Bokh in Mongolia, Ssireum in Korea, etc.

      What's cool is seeing movements that are still being practiced in modern grappling styles which to me is a testament to connection with to each other.
