I don't care what anyone says: The Cable Guy (w/ Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick) is one of the most unfairly hated movies of all-time. Jim did a really good job playing a creep who wouldn't leave his friend (Matthew) alone.
I love the “turn on the subtitles” comment on Snatch, even they just show “????????” at some points!! At least on the DVD version. Also, I can’t see Griffin Dunne without my mind immediately going to An American Werewolf In London!
@ hell yeah, the dialogue alone is worth it, I love how he gets to Hollywood, robbing the store and running in to an audition after his friend got shot
Great underrated flick. The songs were catchy, I still sing "Your father isn't bad, he's maladjusted" every now and then. And I thought the Irish gang were seriously underappreciated. And Robin Williams was awesome, as well as Edward Norton of course.
One thing they didn't mention about "The Cable Guy" is that it was intended to be a satire of thrillers that revolve around obsessed stalkers which was a big trend in movies back in the 1990's.
It's been a very long time since a writer/director has gotten my attention as much as Martin McDonough! Not only is he 4/4 with me so far. Imo, he's made 4 masterpieces!!! Can't wait to see what he does next!!!
Arsenic and Old Lace is just pure perfection, start to finish. Those lovely sweet old ladies, sinister gangsters, and poor Mortimer - who, being the successful middle aged man, should be the sensible guy on top of everything - going crazier by the minute. Same for the original Beetlejuice; we can all just dream of aging as well as this movie does.
The War of the Roses was the final nail in the coffin of my former relationship. It was long enough ago that I find it amusing, and think of it fondly.
There is a blink and you miss it moment in Harold and Maude that elevates the film from dark comedy to genuine art. Anyone who has seen this flim will know what I'm taking about.
I want to watch all of these movies now. Some I’ve seen several times (Arsenic for Old Lace is funny every single time - if you don’t watch any movies made before 1980 I guarantee you’ll find some awesome comedies from the 1930’s and ‘40’s.
Thanks to this video, I learned that dark comedy is my second favorite genre after science fiction. I have seen and enjoyed most of these films. Now I'm gonna have to watch The Wolf of Wall Street and Parasite. Good times ahead!
It depends what you consider "dark", Arrested Development is one of my favourite comedies ever and I would definitely consider that pretty dark in places.
One overlooked dark comedy is Griffin and Phoenix (sometimes subtitled "A Love Story", and released in some countries as Today Is Forever), starring Peter Falk and Jill Clayburgh as two star-crossed lovers who, unknown to one another, are both suffering from terminal cancer diagnoses. Another movie in a similar vein was The End, directed by and starring Burt Reynolds. His lead character is diagnosed with a fatal blood disease, with not much more than a year to live. He chooses to commit suicide and the movie follows the various failed attempts he tries over the course of the film. Dom DeLuise is achingly funny as Marlon Borunki, a paranoid schizophrenic with dissociative identity disorder who aids in the lead character's myriad of different attempt to euthanize himself.
From I've only seen The Menu, Beetlejuice, In The Loop, Little Miss Sunshine, Inglorious Basterds, The Favourite, Network, The Cable Guy, Horrible Bosses, Four Lions, Snatch, The Wolf Of Wall Street, After Hours, Heathers, Parasite, The Big Lebowski, In Bruges, Fargo and Dr Strangelove.
"Kiss kiss Bang Bang" has a brother called "The Nice Guys" 2016 starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe definitely another watch if you liked the first one
The darkest comedy I've ever seen was a film starring Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton called The Dark Backward about a terrible stand up comic who grows a third arm out of his back. Wayne Newton also plays a major role. Twin Peaks dark
Any of the list of the great black comedies has to include Kind Hearts & Coronets from 1949. A guy is line to become a duke, but he has to kill 8 people who are in the line of succession before him, and all 8 are played by Alec Guinness, including Lady Agatha. A hilarious comedy with a body count and a very dark, dark heart.
29:08 How is Dr. Strangelove "the granddaddy of all black comedies" when this very list has 2 movies that are at least 20 years older, and how is it "seminal" when Kubrick directed six previous feature motion pictures, including Spartacus?
Loved The Producers! The best movie about political correctness and the passage of time. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder were great. I would put this only a tiny bit behind one of the best dark comedy’s, Mel Brook’s “Blazing Saddles. Add “Young Frankenstein” and you have three of the best comedies of all time.
2:30 Have you even *seen* The Producers? The play was *produced* by the con artists; it was *penned* by the former Nazi Stormtrooper turned pigeon enthusiast. 2:44 The Producers was released in 2967; To Be or Not to Be was released in 1983. So hw was the latter before the former?

I don't care what anyone says: The Cable Guy (w/ Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick) is one of the most unfairly hated movies of all-time.
Jim did a really good job playing a creep who wouldn't leave his friend (Matthew) alone.
He was NOT his friend. But it was also a study on mental illness.the cable guy is low key a thriller also
I think it's rightly appreciated these days, it just wasn't well received at the time because everyone wanted Ace Ventura.
@@zemarquez4662 in Chip's mind, him and Steven were friends.
I wouldn't say it's hated lol. Pretty popular cult movie
@@clarkness77 Thank god. I think it's Jim's underrated performance.
I honestly don't think anyone else could have played "The Dude" other than Jeff Bridges. He was the embodiment of the character.
Toys and Death to Smoochie should have been on this list.
“I just wanna hang out… no big deal!!” 😂
Right lmao
😂 Still one of my favorite movies
"Promise me you'll never go bungee-jumping in Mexico. They just don't have the regulations." 😂
Oh my gosh 😂
I love the “turn on the subtitles” comment on Snatch, even they just show “????????” at some points!! At least on the DVD version.
Also, I can’t see Griffin Dunne without my mind immediately going to An American Werewolf In London!
Same - about Griffin Dunne
Bad Santa is a good dark comedy movie
Heathers. That movie is wild and I’m still baffled that a TV series was created.
Weekend At Bernies would've been a good honorable mention.
Yep, my favorite line was the reply to the first-act "look at that car, he probably pays more in parking fees than we pay in rent".
@Julia-lk8jn LOL great line!
Kiss kiss bang bang is way under rated, it’s my favorite flick
It’s awesome!
@ hell yeah, the dialogue alone is worth it, I love how he gets to Hollywood, robbing the store and running in to an audition after his friend got shot
Oh I love Arsonic and old lace! I remember watching it in high school theatre class
There is a scene where they are in a cemetery, and on a visible gravestone, is actually Cary Grant's real christened name.
I’ve had some laughs from _Heathers,_ including Veronica’s hellish look, conisdering her comeback: “Yeah? Well, I just got back.”
What? No love for Death to Smoochie? Great list other than that glaring omission
Great underrated flick. The songs were catchy, I still sing "Your father isn't bad, he's maladjusted" every now and then. And I thought the Irish gang were seriously underappreciated. And Robin Williams was awesome, as well as Edward Norton of course.
Very Bad Things - This is definitely one of The Darkest Comedies you'll ever watch.
Yeah, I was wondering where that was?
Take out Big Labowski or Election, which aren’t really that dark, and put in Very Bad Things.
I can't find ANYWHERE to stream really bad things....I've been see this movies since it came out decades ago any suggestions
It should have been titled, "Very Bad Movie."
How did this not make the list?
The Tim Burton adaptation of “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is definitely missing from this list.
Network (1976) is about BROADCAST networks (ABC, NBC, CBS), not cable (HBO, Lifetime,). I feel really old for knowing that tidbit!
Some of us still remember twisting the dial to change the channel from channel 2 through channel 13.
"Promise me you'll never go bungee-jumping in Mexico. They just don't have the regulations." 😂
Fargo is the best and downright funniest movie 😂😂😂😂😂
Where's the love for Napoleon Dynamite? And where is Starship Troopers? Or Robocop?
One thing they didn't mention about "The Cable Guy" is that it was intended to be a satire of thrillers that revolve around obsessed stalkers which was a big trend in movies back in the 1990's.
What about An American Werewolf in London?
I still get a kick out of the gore effects they used for Jack Griffin!
It's been a very long time since a writer/director has gotten my attention as much as Martin McDonough! Not only is he 4/4 with me so far. Imo, he's made 4 masterpieces!!! Can't wait to see what he does next!!!
SO much love. I’m just starting this, but I know I’ve seen several, at least. Can’t wait to bookmark the ones I haven’t yet 🙃
Thank you so much for putting In Bruges on this list! This is our go to Christmas Movie every year.
Our pleasure!
The Voices with Ryan Reynolds! I didn't even know Horror Comedy was a genre
That movie is completely insane, it makes you feel like you're losing your shit just from watching it🤣
Who would've known until WatchMojo was subjected to reviews like this one
Uncle peckerhead is a gem in this category too
Awesome list
I’m convinced American Psycho belongs in this genre conversation.
I'm laughing already
Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic! Those poor malaria victims. It's a good thing Teddy was around.
Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy:
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
World's End
.....all dark & hilarious!
Lebowski might be the funniest movie I've ever seen. You need to watch it 3-4 times.
And never heard of Worlds Greatest Dad so definitely gonna watch.
World's greatest dad is really messed up I'm just warning ya😊
American Psycho and Fight Club. They may not be dark comedies in the strictest sense, but definitely have a lot of dark humor.
Outstanding list!! I don't think I've ever agreed with you more!!!
Pain & Gain is very underrated.
Ok, you’ve just mentioned my favorite film. Cheers!
Thanks for the number 1! Great flick
Burn after Reading is one of my favs
Great choices - some old favorites and some new to me. Adding a few to my list!
Can't wait to watch this video!
So hilarious great job
The War of the Roses was the final nail in the coffin of my former relationship. It was long enough ago that I find it amusing, and think of it fondly.

You completely missed a great one starring Danny DeVito, Robin Williams, and Edward Norton... Death To Smoochy
Citizen Ruth, Young Adult and Jennifer’s Body
Batman, The Punisher & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles you just got to love the turtles
What about beetlejuice?
@ Beetlejuice is great too
🥈
Time Bandits, Eating Rauol, Serial Mom, Seven Sociopaths were great dak comedy films
Eating Raoul should have been on this list.
What about Clue? No soup for you.
No Death to Smoochy?

It's not Эnya. It's Anya Taylor Joy
"Undertaking Betty" is pretty underrated gem of a dark romantic comedy starring Alfred Molina and Christopher Walken
Death to Smoochy and a Fish Called Wanda
It depends what you consider "dark", Arrested Development is one of my favourite comedies ever and I would definitely consider that pretty dark in places.
@@jackbrown4697 not a movie.
@chrispa9573 oh I thought this was shows too
17:21 Nandor the Relentless! 😍
"The Nice Guys" is missing though
What about Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Young Frankenstein, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Ref, Fargo, and Stand By Me?
U mentioned Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas, u forgot True Romance,The King of Comedy and The Art of Self-Defense

I love The Big Lebowski I’m The Dude my personal favourite
Balls of Fury .. the dark dark side of table tennis!!!
I have Fargo on Blu-ray. It really is a fantastic film. 'Yar'...the Minnesotan accents are the best.
Drop Dead Gorgeous. Should be top five. Thx!
I love that they really spanned the decades here, but no Drop Dead Gorgeous? Come ooooon.
Man Bites Dog is a hilarious dark comedy about a documentary crew following a professional killer.
Riders of Justice 2020. Foreign film. I went in blind, and it took me a while before I realised the dark humor and inappropriate jokes were in humor.
"Kiss kiss Bang Bang" has a brother called "The Nice Guys" 2016 starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe definitely another watch if you liked the first one
I love The Big Lebowski. 🎉
You've never seen it, unemployed bot
@StanHalen1936 I have it on my phone, Stannyboy. 🎉
🥉
The darkest comedy I've ever seen was a film starring Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton called The Dark Backward about a terrible stand up comic who grows a third arm out of his back. Wayne Newton also plays a major role. Twin Peaks dark
Some other noteworthy titles:
- Shallow Grave
- Seven Psychopaths
- Bullets Over Broadway
Harold and Maude is my favorite film ever
No best dark comedies list would be complete without "Catch-22" and "Wag The Dog."
I am wondering if Dr. Strangelove or Fargo is number one. I guess I should watch it now
No one else will probably think of this one, Clerks 3.
Honorable Mention: a black comedy thriller nobody seems to talk about.. Head Above Water (1996) starring Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz.
"Network" is aging? It's coming around the bend going full steam.
Any of the list of the great black comedies has to include Kind Hearts & Coronets from 1949. God Bless America should be on this list!
Would "The King of Comedy" be considered a dark comedy?
Yes! Very much so! It’s my absolute favorite movie and while I appreciate this list, I am disappointed that it was not included.
For military dark humour “Bluestone 42”
I guess horror comedy needs its own list.
War of the Roses? oh there it is #11.
Election was great. Matthew Broderick plays petty so well.
Surely, The Guard, starring Brendan Gleeson, should have been included in this list.
I LOVE The Cable Guy!!!!
How did "Fight Club" get left out? As far as dark comedies, it is damn near "Dr. Strangelove".
29:08 How is Dr. Strangelove "the granddaddy of all black comedies" when this very list has 2 movies that are at least 20 years older, and how is it "seminal" when Kubrick directed six previous feature motion pictures, including Spartacus?
Black Cat, White Cat should be No.1 💪
American Psycho deserves a spot on this list.
Burn After Reading should be in the top 10
True Romance, Can't Dogs in Reservoir Be called a dark comedy movie?
23:23 JD isn't psychotic, he's psychopathic (or sociopathic, which one is unclear from the film).
WTF. Why Fight club is not on this list?
No clockwork orange?
