Uptown had a little pop in the mid to late 90s with my generation when college kids needed a break from Pogo's and New Music Station. I miss those bars.
I discharged from the Air Force in 1973. Uptown was 'happening' back then. Mickey's was always the place to go. Before I left in 1969 the places to go were at the Holiday Bowl and Wedgewood Bowl. One time I was dancing with a girl at the Gazebo Room when she asked where I lived. I told her the Eastside. She and her friend left. True story.
My friends and I practically *lived* in the Uptown area that summer. I vividly remember the cops on the motorized scooters, particularly the African American lady. She was cool, and would often stop and chat with us. Those were the best of times.
I grew up there until my family moved to nyc when i was 14. I spent many a day at the arcade right next to the Uptown. I remember when times there were much better. The closing of the mills and no new jobs coming into the area really killed the area. In those days the police patrolled the areas and that had a positive effect on keeping crime down. Also people knew who their neighbors were and if they saw you doing something wrong they'd tell you and then tell your parents. Those days are now a distant memory.

The guy at 00:31 is talking about the downtown area like it was crime capital of the city. Now look at that shithole almost 40 years later. Yeah, I'd say him and his buddies failed miserably at getting things cleaned up.
That area gone downhill nowadays. The Uptown theater is no longer in service. the Wash & Dry Coin Laundry is gone. The Uptown bookstore & Movie Arcade is boarded up.
Supposedly they're bringing two Barnes & Noble Bookstores to Downtown soon, although with online giant Amazon wanting to put EVERYBODY out of business across the world, who knows how that'll go?

Just coming across this and I appreciate it. I was born in March 1979.
Was at YSU during the 70s - saw Boston downtown in an old movie theater & Left End at Idora Park.

Belly busters at the Jam Bar, and Mickey's in the 90's for sure.
back when the people actually got involved and tried helping the community as a whole and not just when their specific interests were involved

This video mentions the Elaine Poulos case. God rest her soul.
I went to school and graduated with Elaine...she was a sweet person. We all hung out uptown back then. How things have changed
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 SAD. Did they ever find WHO committed the crime❓❓❓❓
one nasty town!
Elaine Poulos was murdered by a wannabe 'Son of Sam' type killer, in Youngstown? Good gracious? :O
My people lived there for years my grandpa was a mechanic there Jim Jimmy Lee Smith from Alabama

Too bad there is NO activity there now. Good or bad.
well, in 1979 it looks old and dirty...not much difference between 1979 and today
Why would anyone want to move there now??
Jada Parks I want to and I live in Kansas City Missouri I’m going to start a construction company
