Gorgeous and mysterious piece of music. This has always stayed in my mind since I first heard it as a child on the Black Magic adverts. Absolutely hated the chocolates though!

Brilliant, just as I remember it. As a child I always used to think that the Black Magic chocolate adverts had a slightly sinister and eerie tone to them. They were 'grown up' chocolates, and it was a special treat to have one! What great memories!

I know exactly what you mean - but disliked the chocolates. Preferred Milk Tray, Dairy Box or Weekend!

You wouldn't think that this lovely, mellow tune was from the same composer that brought us the rather creepy and spine-tingling theme to the BBC's Day of the Triffids back in 1981!

Many thanks for posting this. One of the best TV commercial themes ever. Yes - this is the original full-length version as recorded for CBS Special Products. Gunning re-recorded this for his 'Skylines' CD a few years back. Simply gorgeous. Only earlier this week did I book an appointment with a view to investigating the theme John Barry is said to have composed for an earlier BM commercial. I'll let you know my findings in due course.

You are very welcome, this has always remained a puzzle with me over the years as to who actually composed this steamy piece of music, and its only recently I discovered it to be Gunning and not Barry.
I have the Skylines cd, but prefer this version of the theme. Why did it not make a single is beyond me?
Yes please update me on your findings , maybe like us the rumour started that Barry did a version, because people just assumed it was him, and so there is no other version to be found? Who knows the secret..........?

    • @garethbramley1

Had I bought this LP some years ago when I first saw it I would have been able to tell you! I've had the 'Highlights' one with the 'Sunsilk' theme many years but I never saw this LP more than once. It was Gunning himself who confirmed to me that he had composed it (before he re-recorded it).
There has to be a Barry one out there - I think just before this series of commercials - which I think was late 60s onwards. - because it's listed in 'checklist' which was published years ago (1970/1) in an issue of Films / Films & Filming. This listing was compiled from info from PRS and Barry himself. Otherwise, I would have dismissed it as an error some time ago. Stay tuned. My appointment is 4th September.

This 'commercial' recording must have been specially recorded with this album in mind.
It was a collection of love-related songs from top artists from the CBS rosta. Their Special Products Division obviously saw a chance to cash in on the success of the 'Black Magic' commercials.
Gunning's theme was first used in 1972 and was still being used into the 80s.
This is an 'immaculate' version is in stereo and was exclusive to this album issued in 1974.
Gunning also re-recorded another version of his theme more recently as 2007 on his 'Skylines' CD.
It was initially thought that this famous theme was composed by John Barry who did actually record some jingles for this product in the 60s. These were used until around 1970 and later *arrangements* were used for their three ads from 1971.
Gunning's theme then took over in 1972 and I guess was the first commercial recording as it was not recorded by Alan Hawkshaw or Robert James for those albums recorded for EMI.

The bass flute was in fact played on this recording, the more recent recording on CD, and on the commercials by Stan Sulzman. He actually recorded three bass parts in unison and one an octave higher, to get this effect. Stan Sulzman also played the alto saxophone in Christopher Gunning's theme for 'Poirot' in addition to all the saxophone parts in the (C. Gunning) incidental scores.

Stan Sulzman?! Not surprising: I love the work he's done over the years in various jazz bands - but particularly with Kenny Wheeler.
