      Hi Fern, sorry for the mealies infestation.
      You were so gracious about answering the personal questions and I think it was the right call addressing the rumours once and for all because they can become toxic. I do believe some people are genuine worried about you, and as long as your privacy and boundaries are respected all should be good😊
      Edit: Love the song. Thank you

      100% I understand that putting any aspect of your life online opens up a can of worms were people want to know more, think they are in some way owed information! Yes we can all be nosey at times but it's not our business! And some people really over step with the questions/theories!

    Fern, the way you addressed the relationship questions was incredible! I felt it deeply 🩷 My boyfriend has ADHD and because of that our relationship is a little rocky sometimes as well but we always make it work in the end. Breakup doesn’t always have to be anyone’s fault and sometimes people forget that. Super refreshing to listen to your take and i’m happy that’s the case cause i’ve been curious and frankly a little worried for some time now 🌱 Also *your* mealies are especially nasty beasts…

    Root mealybugs and regular mealybugs are two different species. You have to do a soil drenches every 7-14 days for at least 5-6 weeks. In the US we use Azamax but I'm not sure if the Canadian equivalent or if you can get that there

    • @wildfern

      Root mealies usually look more ‘streamlined’ and tend to stay in the soil. I’m wondering if it’s foliar ones hiding out in the soil? At any rate, the soil had to go!

    Food grade diatomaceous earth cures mealy bugs. Just get a small soft artist brush and paint them on the mealies. It really was a miracle cure for my string of pearls (which mealies love) and my cacti. Before I discovered DE, I had to throw out infested plants cause I was unable to fit them. My advice for root mealies (currently have them too) take cuttings and ditch the original root ball. That's been my plan of action so far. I've had about 70 plants with them. All hoya and succulent types. Pretty sure it's cause I bottom watered them all after letting them get too dry during my move.

    Ug girl root mealies killed off a lot of my plants a couple years ago. I found that the PERLITE i was using had mealies in the bag. So… i just got rid of the substrate, washed the entire plant and SCRUBBED the roots, and used clean substrate. I just got mealies again for the first time in ages so im at a point where im about to just bake all my substrate before i use it.

    Unfortunately there is no such thing as a cruelty free diet unless you grow your food yourself. A picker just died in the field the other day and other pickers kept working around them. (Not trying to be a dampener, there’s a whole reality out there that gets ignored in the conversation)

    • @berniea.3255

      I agree with you for sure! Laws are slowly gaining momentum in California to protect farm workers such as overtime pay which just went into effect this year. So much more needs to be done though.

    • @1donutatday
      @1donutatday 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@berniea.3255 it’s a huge problem that gets swept under the rug. And since it’s mostly immigrants who do such jobs, no one wants to start anything because of the risk of being deported. The human exploitation in picking is just as bad as the farming is for the animals.

    • @fawn2911
      @fawn2911 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Doesn't mean that people shouldn't at least try to live a cruelty free lifestyle. By your logic you shouldn't own any electronics because they're often assembled by overworked and underpaid employees. I get that people who pick my food might be mistreated but that doesn't mean I'm gonna start eating animal products or using cosmetics tested on animals. I don't have the ability to grow my own food but I do have the ability to cut out meat.

    • @1donutatday
      @1donutatday 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fawn2911 never said you had to? But a woman dying in a carrot field and the other pickers being forced to carry on while her body lies there, like people need to know the cost of their food. It’s delusional to think eating purely vegetarian is 100% ethically flawless and is just unacceptable.
      You definitely read between the lines and added words that were not said. Not hard to find the angry vegan. 🤷🏽‍♀️
      Also, most electronics are assembled by CHILDREN being paid pennies a day.

    You handled all of the questions about your relationship with your boyfriend with such grace. I'm happy for you two and hope that it works out this time. You seem very happy and deserve to be happy!
    Also, I wish that I had the will and liked enough things other than meat to be vegan. I too love animals so so very much and hate how things are in the industries that produce meat and animal products. Kudos to you for doing you and standing for what you're passionate about! I just hatched out eggs from my friend's flock back in March of this year. They aren't laying eggs yet (not sure what's going on with them because typically they should have by now) but I love them so much! People don't realize the personality that is packed into those little fluffy butts! I love my roosters too! I joined a facebook group called Rooster Allies which is a group that encourages people to be patient with their roosters and embrace them. I have a couple who peck at my feet and legs when they want to be held (I know that's what they're doing because they don't peck me while I'm holding them, but if I put them down they peck again wanting to be held, lol). I'm going on like the crazy chicken lady that I've become, lol...but all that said, I think that you would love having rescue chickens. They're a great pet to have and very fun to watch.
    Loved the long video and hope the root mealies weren't too stressful and are eradicated!

    Fern I'm telling ya now, the Barrinas are def causing issues. I had them for a couple years and all of my plants did terrible under them long term. The color temp they put out is definitely below what plants prefer. Some of my plants didn't grow at all, but most would push out growth that would progressively get smaller, be a weird off yellow-green color, or deformed in some way. I switched to cheap, 6500K LED shop lights and my plants couldn't be happier. Every one of my Hoyas bloomed this year, and my Krimson Queen won't stop blooming lol. She has like 6 or 7 peduncles now, and she didn't have a single peduncle before I switched my lights this past January. The shop lights I got are similar in appearance and setup as Barrinas, but they're actually 6500K full spectrum lights.

    Hey Fern, if those mealies were on the leaves too, then the ones in the pot were probably not root mealies but rather normal ones doing their disgusting little hiding-around-the-drainage-holes thing. So at least you're only dealing with one kind and not two. But since they were hiding in the pot, it was definitely worth going full noise and getting rid of it all!

    Just FYI about your neighbour's and the fence. The law is only 6 ft for your fence but there's no max height of trees. So you can plant a tree fence and that can grow as tall as you desire! It is obviously more maintenence but also more privacy!

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I have been thinking this!! We have some tall, fast growing trees at the back of the yard that the previous owner planted. I always joke that I wish she had put them along the side instead 😂 I definitely need to look into getting some planted there, perhaps after the fence is installed 🌲

That would be a good idea to add a fence, the view next door is unappealing and knowing you have a bunch of young guys renting the place, I would certainly do the same thing. Your house is so cozy and I love your windows. It's just about finding that sweet spot for the plants. Take care of yourself 😊and don't over do it.

    I’ve got the tiny version of that disco planter, I’ve got a baby rhipsalis in it looking like spider legs coming out and hanging down, guess I’ll always have to have a baby trailer for it lol
    You find root mealies… I go into panick mode… sigh… empathy is a pain in the patukus…
    What about a diluted alcohol spray for the roots? The alcohol on a qtip works for the leaf mealies right? I’m still learning I dunno, I’d be checking roots of everything around it
    We had to move (extenuating circumstances) from a dream spot up a mountain to right next to our busy highway a year ago… HATE IT, we’re looking for a new place in the spring, I love my quiet and chill space too. Plus a yard that isn’t all stone crush would be nice, and more windows

    I don’t really know much about your relationship bc I have only been following you for around a year or so, but I have been with my husband for 12 years and I feel you so deeply on the “gotta work on it” stuff. My husband and I both have emotional baggage from our upbringings that we have had to reconcile with in terms of us as people and for our relationship, and it has been HARD. We’ve both changed and grown a lot and we are still always changing and growing, and it’s actually really nice to look back and see how far we have come =) so I hope you and your partner are able to do the same.
    My neighbors are actually almost all elderly and it is FR the best. The only down side is that our next-door neighbor on one side is best friends with our former homeowner and when the former homeowner visits she comes to the property line and snoops, lol. Old people are so fking noseyyyyy!!! lol. But they are great anyway. I have a veggie garden in the summer and I grow extra veggies for the neighbors bc they are in their 80s and can’t do it for themselves. It’s awesome bc it is nice and quiet. We have one neighbor with two daughters and they can be kinda loud during the summer (cuz they are like 6 and 4) but it’s cute to watch them play with their friends and my dogs loooooove them, so it’s great.
    Sorry you were a nurse during covid I bet that was terrifying. So many nurses left bc of the pandemic and their mental health. We have a friend who worked in the ICU that had a mental breakdown during covid, I felt so bad for him. He is doing better now. You gotta do what you gotta do for your mental health. Good for you getting out of that =)

    Ugh, I hope I didn’t give too much extra life to that “cheater” comment (that was deleted). I don’t normally respond to other comments on here, but this one pissed me off. I should know by now not to engage, but it’s a huge pet peeve of mine, when someone makes an off handed, rude comment with absolutely no basis in reality. It’s so destructive, unnecessary, and callous,
    and it just gets under my skin. 😡Anyway, I just wanted to add that I bought my first condo with my then boyfriend, and we had it 6 months before we spontaneously decided to get married. Our priority was having a permanent place to call our own, and when the opportunity arose, we leapt at the chance, and never looked back. Sometimes you’ve got to weigh the risk vs reward, and there’s far more reward in having your own home than worrying about what ifs that may not ever happen, right? Your house seems perfect for you, and it’s really nice to get to see these little slices of your life - oh, and I’m so sorry you got a nasty mealybug surprise - they are just so gross! 😑 I love your cozy content and green lush vibes. 💚

    Aw, I miss my first house. Small little two bedroom in a small town. It was so easy to clean! I had repotted neighbors that built a greenhouse in their backyard-- it was fancy. My other neighbors were elderly as well. I lived in a busy road, so it wasn't quiet, but I feel you on the 20 year olds. I've done that too. I'm impressed that one of them has a side hustle. 😆

    Also, a while back you told us about your cookbooks. Can you like tell us your favorites? I do eat chicken & beef, but would like to try more veggies. I think that would be a good way. Heck, might even turn a new leaf. Gave up pork 15 years ago.... So for health and to save money on meat it could be a way to go.
    I think politics, religion, & what people eat are things that are better not to talk about too.
    Food wise: As long as no one is a cannibal or possibly eating a species to extinction... It's no one's right to have a say in what diet or food lifestyle people follow.
    Thanks, for sharing how you eat and cook with us on vlogs. It has sparked an interest on my end.

    We bought our first house shortly after we were married in 1969, and we were always very much together. After coming up to being married for almost 56 yrs, you really get to know each other. One person will say the exact same thing the other started to say, you know what each other is thinking, literally. It's quite the ride. But people give up way too easy these days, to us, our marriage vows really did mean a lot, we've gone through thick and thing, every couple does. But never even enough to spilt up. Or even think about it.

    I did horticulture in the interior of BC and my diploma contained very little science. Well, it did but honestly it was very easy. I'm not a science brain either. I was all about english, art, and history. Science was not, and still it not, my forte. If it's something you're interested in, it's worth looking into from a pure interest point of view. I will say that it's a very poorly paid industry in general, especially in the interior. I would imagine the lower mainland has more to offer and I can't say about Vancouver Island.
