Hey Dave! A question. I clearly see how the distance, when the line has its origin at (0, 0), is equal to the hypotenuse of the rectangle triangle that has rise and run as legs. Now, imagine a line that goes from (2, 3) to (5, 3). You could clearly see that it has a length of 3, but if you wanted to derive it from the formula, how can we know it? If you plug the coordinates into the formula, it gives back the length, but now the legs of that triangle are not rise over run (they are diagonals in respect to the X-Y axis). Thanks!
not sure i understand the question! all the sides can have lengths derived from the distance formula, and they will all fit into the pythagorean theorem.
the pythagorean theorem is just a special case of the law of cosines (cos90=0). in your question the line is horizontal, and cos0=1, so if we apply that to the law of cosines we're left with d^2=(x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2-2.(x2-x1)(y2-y1) which as you can see will give us the same equation since (y2-y1)=0. i don't know if this would be helpful after two years but maybe someone else might benefit from it, so there you are

He then transferred 25.00mL of Solution Ato a 250.00mL volumetric flask and added distilled water up to the calibration mark to make up Solution B. The concentration of the hydroxide ions in Solution B is 2.00 *10-3 mol/L. Calculate the molarity of the original solution of Ba(OH)2.
This is great. I found video of a guy who literally said in front of people to "just plug in numbers" as if switching digits for alphabet mean understanding what equation does. Hope children find more people like you rather than him. I swear every idiot like him is wasting potential of every pupil he gets into contact.
