I m big fan of Rafi Saaheb, but Talat Saaheb's soft voice has made this song immortal. I can not imagine any other singing this classic.

Yes it is true that SD Burman wanted Rafi but Bimal Roy requested SD for Talat and SD complied with his request only under the condition that if the results were not good, the song would be re-recorded with Rafi. Now why did SD put that condition? The fact is, SD felt at that point of time Talat had begun to lose control of the “tremolo” of his voice while Rafi developed the art of “crooning” that he had lacked. Please note earlier Talat was always SD’s first choice as the lead singer not Rafi. Rafi only replaced him from Pyaasa onward. Fortunately Talat did the job well and the song was kept. And that was one the last great songs of Talat. SD never used Talat again. In fact Talat soon faded out of the industry.The same thing happened to SD-Hemant Kumar team. After the great number “Na tum hum jano”, SD never called him again as he noted the fall out of Hemant’s voice in the rehearsals. Within a year, Hemant Kumar was also out of the film industry as a singer. I have covered these stories in my book “Incomparable Sachin Dev Burman” published by Blue Pencil, Delhi India.
For your kind information, the playback singer who sang the the famous na tum hame jaano was Hemant kumar, who also sang for Dev Anand under S D Burmans films like: Jaal, House No 44, Solva Saal and Manzil.
Tum hame jaano was picturized on Dev Anand in the film Baat ek raat ki.
You have made this video on the saying of an ordinary man. What is proof of such saying? Any interview of SD or Talat Sahab? When Film Sujata was made, Rafi and Talat both were on top. If Rafi Sahab sung, it might become also Super hit as it is now.
