I was 15 when I first watched this movie. It was like 4 am and i couldn't sleep and so i watched the movie. I ended up sobbing quietly because I've been suicidal since I was 8. And as soon as she had gotten up from the festival, I knew where it was headed. When my friend watched it, she broke down because she was too familiar with my suicide attempts. I've lost a friend to suicide and had many more be suicidal. It's...such a hard thing to live with. This scene was honestly so well done. This still remains one of my favorite movies to this day.
Edit: Wanted to do a quick update. I'm 20 now (and when I made this comment originally), doing pretty well, and looking to move out so I can get the help I need. Still struggling mentally, but in a much better place. I struggle with a few different disorders, but I mostly avoided sharing that as it is very private and my experiences are very personal to me. I wanted to share this comment to not only vent but to express my love for one of my favorite pieces of media. I hope everyone is doing well and anyone who can relate to this, there is always a reason to keep going even if it doesn't make sense. It'll all just be a bad memory and there is hope for a better tomorrow. I never thought I'd live past 8-19 and now I'm 20 and even if I still struggle, I'm growing to care about myself and value my needs and be someone who little me can be proud of. No matter your situation, there is help put there for you

I watched this movie when it came out. A couple years later my older sister attempted committing suicide.
After we made sure she was feeling better with herself I showed her this movie and we ended up crying and hugging for like 2 hours.
Now ever time I rewatch it I end up crying a lot cause it just hits right at home
Edit: I started getting notifications for this one 2 years later.
A little update, we're fine so far. She's got a good guy by her side, a nice job and a cute cat.
Unfortunately I had to move to another city last year so I've been seeing my family less now. But I still make sure to call twice or thrice a week and visit every now and then to have a nice dinner with her and my parents.
Since I saw some people with valid concerns in the responses: I showed her this movie about 6 years after *that* happened. She was already in a much better state at that time. I showed her the movie just as a token of appreciation since this movie is all about self acceptance and forgiveness above anything else, something honestly both of us really needed back then, hope you understand where I was coming from.
She's my only sibling and six years older than me so during my childood she was my role model. We're both very shy and reserved people so we're very close and pretty much each other's best friend.
To everyone giving us nice wishes: Thank you, and hope you're doing okay and enjoying life.

I watched this movie with my brother after trying to commit suicide myself. He and I cried many times and afterward he laughed and told me it was kinda fucked up that I showed him that after getting out of the hospital. I told him I wanted him to understand my side.
Suicidal tendencies don’t just make you want to kill yourself. You distance yourself from everything and everyone you love, you genuinely think they’d be better off without you and that you are no good for this world. Your self esteem plummets, your self worth is at an all time low, and you feel like you are nothing. You go through bouts of apathy and extreme emotion. Constantly feeling as if you were never meant to be born,, so why stay? You go through the torment of day to day life, whether that be work or school or just getting out of bed, you don’t find the need or even a little bit of joy in anything.
For some, committing is the hardest part, we’re all hardwired to be afraid of death, whether it be by fate’s, someone else’s, or your own hands. It still terries you regardless. For most, when you’re on that brink, you know you’ll die and you’re just waiting silently for it, is when that fear starts to set in. Do you actually want this? Do you really want to die, like this? But what about that one person, who always cared? Would they miss you? I don’t ant to die. Help. Is all that goes through your head.
And the only ones who know that are the ones who live to tell the story.
If you are looking into killing yourself, take it from me, it’s not the answer. You will find happiness. You will find someone who cares. You are worth everything that you are. I promise. I love you. You are so strong for making it this far and you’re strong enough to keep going. I know it’s hard, I know it doesn’t seem worth it, but it is. It will get better.
    I’m proud of you.

I can confidently say a silent voice is by far the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. I didn't remember any of the details from this video so when this scene happened in the movie... I don't think I'll ever forget how that felt. I'm glad I can truly appreciate this video now too, thank you so much for it.

i relate to shoko an insane amount. im not deaf, but legally blind, and i was bullied for being different. ive had experience with attempts since i was 12, and if i had to be honest i regret failing them. just like shoko i have never hated those who have hurt me and only hate myself more for being this way, and just like shoko i apologise a lot.
Shoko honestly was one of the first characters in media i saw that i related to, and on such an extreme level too. this film is amazing, and so many people should consider its message.
edit: im going to edit this message with a story that happened recently. at the time of this comment and edit, i am 17, so im still in school. less than 2 months ago, on the 23rd January 2024, i attempted during school. after a severe breakdown the night before, and deciding i have had enough of surviving, i tried to end my life. i failed, clearly, and tried to walk away as if nothing had happened, but a teacher had noticed the scars on my neck, and tried to get me to tell her what had happened. i couldnt. but i think deep down she knew. so the school had to contact my parents. i havent been to school since and wont be going back. my parents think things are improving for me while in reality every day i wish i hadnt failed any of my attempts and wish i had the strength to try again.
im sorry. i dont know if i should have brought this up. but i hope you all can be happy. i hope you all can live happy lives. and i dont know any of you, but i love you deeply.

This was the first anime to make me cry at all, but after I watched it, I started looking for shows that would give me similar feelings. I found Anohana and loved it, but it took a few episodes for me to get into it. If you haven't watched it, I would give it a go.
Also, I have heard I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Angel Beats, and Clannad are good. I also really enjoyed Bunny Girl Senpai.

@@umbrella3096 From someone who has watched many of the notorious heartbreaking animes, I strongly recommend you to watch Clannad. It is the only anime/ movie that has brought me close to tears, while the others like A Silent Voice only stirred up my feelings, Clannad changed me and how I perceive the topic of Clannad, Family.
There is Clannad (Season 1) and Clannad After Story (S2). Clannad is mediocre and just a normal slice of life high school romance anime. It acts as an introduction to the characters and situation. It may and probably will be a little boring but watch it before you continue with Clannad After Story and Oh Boy, in After Story sh*ts gonna get real.
Either watch it as the first of the list or save the best for last, but just watch it.

This showed up on my youtube recommendations, and I watched it. Scrolled through the comments to find @jim s comment. Decided to watch the movie and came back here.
Firstly thank you so much for making this video.
Secondly, I'm 18, I've been dealing with a lot of suicidal thoughts since I was 15. It was getting very difficult, so I talked to my parents. They tried to help me as best as they could. But I will never forget how hurt they were when I told them about it. They have tried their best and spent every blood and tear towards my upbringing, but here we are.... I'm far from what they expected me to be. I deeply resonate to Shoya Ishida, I've done some shit in my life. I feel alone and terrible from time to time. Yes, I do have friends who love me, but it's something I cannot really explain, and I hope noone understands coz it's a really shitty feeling, noone should know how it feels.
This movie made me weep like no other. It also gave me reasons to look at people when I'm talking to them. I don't even know why I'm writing this, I'm just old enough to understand that someone might want to read this.

Every time I watch this movie I cry so so much.
Personally, this movie hits a little too close to home lol. I even get a little choked up talking about this movie because it hit so hard for me.
I remember after watching this movie, with tears running down my face and my shirt soaked in tears, that people care. Even if it doesn’t feel that way, there are people out there who care for me and love me. I know that sound cheesy and cliche but it’s true.
Even though I don’t go through the same exact things that the characters go through, I still understand and go through something similar. It’s a lot to explain and I don’t want to over share but this movie hits people in many different ways, whether that be from personal experience, similar situations, similar mental illnesses, and etc. This movie is my personal favorite and has made a big impact on me and I will never forget about this movie.
