    Dovetails is a hitter

    I have a bottle of Seagrass, a Dovetail and a Bourbon batch #33. I love all of them but, like everyone else, I think Seagrass is the best. Not by a large margin though. And my next one will be Vantage. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I love playing with ice when drinking Barrel products. Not whole cubes, just small pieces of crushed ice. After a while you kinda know how much ice you need to make it just perfect, and you don’t have to worry about diluting the whisky too much . When neat , I find the flavors simply too concentrated, I feel like I’m missing out, but with a little bit of ice the nose and the palate open up beautifully.
    On a completely different note, I’m trying to remember the last time you guys reviewed a whisky I didn’t have. I should definitely stop buying so many bottles.

    Thanks for the review, I haven't tried any Barrell yet, so haven't bought any yet. Really appreciate the insight.

      At their price it’s definitely wise to try before you buy. Cheers and thanks for watching Joe!

    Oh I love Vantage. one of my fav pours. so gotta grab a bottle of dovetail to try. That number in corner is ridiculously small. thanks for honest review. cheers

      You about need a magnifying glass to see the batch number. It’s microscopic!

    I have tried the Dovetail & I liked it a lot. The steep price (85 bucks) is holding me back though. It happened to be on sale (65 bucks) in my area just recently during a yearly clearance event. Went with the Seagrass instead (60 bucks) since it was recommended like crazy & man was it awesome! Came back & bought me a backup bottle 😂.

    Seagrass is my favorite of the few Barrel options I have tasted

    Seagrass is what Willy Wonka and Grandpa Joe would have drank to celebrate Charley winning the chocolate factory.

    They changed the Flintstones vitamins at some point. I bought a bottle recently to compare to Dickel and they're different than they used to be.
    I'm pretty sure Barrell also sources from Tennessee Distilling LTD. If they disclose the age or the mashbill, you can tell if it was Dickel. But if it just says Tennessee, you can't.

    I bought the little sampler pack from barrel awhile back. My wife and i tasted through them all. We both agreed vantage and seagrass were our top 2, followed by armida. Oddly enough be both weren't fans at all of dovetail. It may even be a case of tasting them all together where dovetail had issues. if I had it on its own there's a chance I may like it.

      Between the sweetness of Seagrass and the wood on Vantage, it could certainly get drowned out in a tasting of all three. Definitely will be trying all three together soon ourselves.

    I have no idea of what batch #s I had, but I loved my (now empty) bottles of Seagrass and Dovetail. Neat. BUT, I recently had the opportunity to try a Seagrass Grey Label with a 16-year (?) age statement. Oh my goodness, that blew my mind. So so good. I know it's, like, $250, but it's one of the few $$$ bottles I've tried that made me go hmmmm, maybe I should buy this and not 6 other bottles!

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว

      The higher end Seagrass expressions definitely have our interest. We've heard the gold label is even on another level above the grey label, which seems crazy, but we wouldn't object to finding out for ourselves if given the chance to try it.

    I feel that Vantage is hands down the best of the Barrell offerings, but if you prefer cocktail like bourbon, then yeah, Seagrass would be it. Its straight up apricot juice.

    To be fair, I can't imagine any scenario EXCEPT a review, where you would side by side #7 & #13. When you do side by sides, the subtler expression nearly always looses, but I am sure on its own, after you had finished the bottle of #7, you very likely would not have noticed much of a difference in the #13. Great episode. Cheers.

      That’s a fair point. Batch variance over time happens to every product release and we don’t think it’s discussed enough, but at the same time it’s also difficult to detect if you don’t have different batches side by side. Cheers and thanks for watching!

    Flintstones vitamins...lol, I want the Dino Ribs! I tried the neat vs over ice experiment with Buffalo Trace a couple of weeks ago. There's a big difference between the two. A friend thinks it's better over ice, I disagree. I see Barrel products but I've never paid them much attention, probably because my bar is overstocked right now (I know, that statement is heresy!).

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We tend to agree. It’s not that ice is inherently bad, and it can work wonders in some pours, but the colder temperature tends to make most pours a bit sharper in profile and muted in flavor.

    I love Seagrass and Vantage is delicious too. I tried Dovetail a year or so ago and wasn’t a huge fan, it was good. I did not like Armida.

    I haven't tried Dovetail, but my bottle of Vantage didn't really impress me, so at $90 for Dovetail, I don't see myself buying it. Maybe a pour at a bar?

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah at $90 it’s definitely a try before you buy unless you just think you’ll love it.

    Seagrass is so f-ing good... I simultaneously want to & NOT want to drink it so it doesn't run out (plus that price tag...). Just got a bottle of Vantage last week (only 60 bucks at Costco!) and cracked it last night, but I think my palate was off as I didn't get a lot of nuance or interesting flavors, so I'm giving it a day to recover before I try agian.
    I have been unsure about Dovetail since I really dislike Dickel AND Rum-finished whiskies, but they really do know what they're doing over there at Barrell, so it might be worth it.

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Vantage is definitely less dynamic and more an experience in wood so not surprised to hear your initial take. And if rum finishes aren’t your jam then it’s a definite try before you buy. Or just get more Seagrass. Can’t go wrong there!

    How old a bottle was batch 7 and is oxidation of the older bottle effecting its smell and taste?

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not likely. It tastes like it always has since it opened up and it stored out of light in a temperate controlled closet on the house.
