In finland its called jääkärireppu not jääkäri pack and abroad its called jaegar pack. Two names, both mean same. Jääkäri is jaeger in finnish. Jääkäri is an infantry soldier, something like rangers in usa. This is new version of savotta's kevyt rajapartioreppu/light borderpatrol pack. Both are designed for military use, and are very good for civilians to use too.

Today jääkäri is an infantry rank equivalent to Private (OR-2), and every G.I. who's service branch in FDF is infantry, whether they're light, heavy, mechanized can be colloquially called a jääkäri. So this is distinct from the German-speaking world where Jäger, like Gebirgsjäger (Mountain rangers), Fallschirmjäger (Airborne), usully signifies a specialized branch. The jääkäri moniker has been also assigned to other service branches, like paratroopers, "laskuvarjojääkäri" which are maybe better translates as airborne rangers, and "panssarijääkäri" who are (armoured) mechanized infantry trained to move with the main battle tanks.
Luke...been watching your reviews and I must say you are honest about gear. I picked up this pack (never heard of it) because I wanted a very durable pack. It's great and I find it as good as you say. I am a US military veteran and have used army rucksacks medium, large and very large and this pack is as durable as those were. I bought the two (large pouches) for the exterior. This pack is like a US military 1000 denier nylon duffle bag with an internal aluminum lightweight frame and with a rubberized interior. So as most military guys/gals know, the issued US duffle bag is extremely durable. I have had Gregory packs and other backpacks. This is a great alternative to those packs, as well made, probably better. Thanks for the great review.
This was here probably all ready, but varusteleka is a compound word (two words combined). Varuste and leka. Which means varuste = gear and leka = sledge hammer. So... Gear sledge hammer. There ya go :-)
I found a cool little pack at big five. (Skyline 9 - Outdoor Products) It's a day pack but it has an aluminum internal stay and a hip belt. One side zip entrance, two bottle pockets and one central outer pocket with a vertical zip . The hip belts each have a pocket. $40. I grabbed this as an EDC pack because it was so feature rich in such a small package.

Savotta jaakkari the Only pack I never sell or get bored of. With side molle pouches it really can fit overnight winter kit. If I had to own one pack it would be this. Great review too
I don't think they had water bottles in mind for the side pockets. It is too keep the lashed on gear from dropping down. I would mount water bottle/canteen carriers to the belt anyway.

I bought and love this pack for hunting. Simple top loader with a floating lid. Rugged, able to cleat gear on to "pack". Wise color choices. My only dislike is I would prefer the lid pocket zipper to be external, so one can quickly grab say toilet paper or sunglasses without having to open pack and dig inside. I realize with the molle webbing on lid I could attach another pocket, but that's not as sleek. Just my opinion.
I can see it being worth the (still in 2024) $200 price tag if you're going to be using it for situations in which you need something that is going to take a LOT of abuse. But it's still just a 30L pack. You're not going to put heavy loads in it and, as such, comfort isn't really much of an issue in that size. To be honest, I've had a 29L Ozark Trail Quest pack (they still sell them at WM) for at least as long as this vid has been out. I would say it's the best quality:price pack they've made in that time and it's only going to set you back $29. The main differences are that this pack is basically a tube with straps, whereas the OT pack is more compartmentalized, with pockets, etc., so that 29L is divided up in multiple places. The Quest has one water bottle pocket that is easily deeper than the shallow ones this pack has, while the other side has a zipped compartment rather than a second water bottle pocket. It's also made of more rugged material than most OT packs. I would love this pack - especially with that side zipper - but it's $6.67/liter, as opposed to $1/liter. For a day pack, that math just doesn't work. For something that has to stand up to much more than your standard day pack, it might. And my opinion on this might be entirely different if the Quest was as cheaply made as other OT packs. But it's still something a little special in my opinion.
By the way, savotta means specifically a large-scale of woodcutting/clearcutting work, although later the term has also been used for any lengthy arduous physical task.

This really is a good pack but I heard something last night, on a video here, that the shoulder straps aren't very comfortable using it all day. Have you found that to be the case? // Also, have you had any experience with the Polish company, Wispot? I almost bought their Raccoon 45L pack yesterday that seems every bit the quality pack as this Finland pack. Priced similar to these as well. I would like to see these packs with the same feature as the Fjellreven Kajka pack : With a zipper on each side, and a velcro at the top so that you can open up the whole front and have a full and easy overview of all the gear, pick out what you need without draging other things out at the same time, and pack it again without pushing all the other gear around. With that I would buy it......well maybe it's not a big issue with this smaller pack, but I think it would be really great for the bigger Jaakari L. But really cool packs, and would like to try that carrier system. Love the review.

More days Trip ? I cant understand how. Im not sure Which one my First Backpack will be. Last Time we did 1 full day and Night bushcraft Trip. A Friend got 40L and at it the end it was full (With tarp in it) the Jäger M is enough for things like this ?
depends on your loadout, with the addition of their vertical pouches or särmä XL general purpose pouches on both sides, and some särmä utility straps, easy 5-7 days for me for just 3 days, the large or xl size would be an overkill imo
Love this backpack! I've got a Karrimor Predator 45 which looks the same like this Savotta Jääkäri. It's 45 liters but you can make it smaller with zippers on the side or buy side pockets (for zippers, not only for molle webbing), the material is cordura, and the price is almost the same. For this price, the Karrimor has more to offer, this is the only reason why I'd rather choose that one. I really love this Finnish one though! Karrimor Predator has a 30 l version. That looks almost the same like this Finnish backpack, but that's cheaper. So again: I love this bagpack, I have nothing against it, but you can find the same type of backpack for less money! The Predator 45 looks like an interesting bag, have to admit that. However, Jääkäri backpack is bit slimmer in width, which may be an advantage in tight places, skinng etc. And after a quick look Jääkäri might be a bit more sturdy as a whole with the added back support. Plus the full-lenght zipper opening, which is awesome! Also note that the Jääkäri is the smaller-mid-size option in the series. They're very simple and well made, but the price?!! And the webbing would have been nice if there was some webbing going the other direction to strap stuff and not just for pouches.

The letter "Ä" is similar to the vocal sound of your word "hair". When it comes to Finnish language one vowel is short and two are long. :-) I might as well inform you of the letters å and ö as well Å is similar to the vocal sound as spoken of your word board and Ö is like the sound of "i" in the word bird. I hope this helps out. :-)
for example Finnish last names in foreign countries like USA. If the last name has letter "ä", its written as "ae" to be easier to pronounce by foreigns. Järvinen=Jaervinen
either Varusteleka got the sizes wrong on this pack...or it's not the pack on the Savotta website....the pack on the Savotta website is 22L. Varusteleka says it's 30L. Maybe special made for Varusteleka??

What you call waterbottle pockets are made to secure gear like axes and so on actually. Jääkäri is hunter but used for light infantry historically. Jägare in swedish, jäger in german and so on. ä is not the same sound as a and ö is not the same sound as o.
“Jaeger” is really wrote “Jäger” [ˈjɛːɡɐ] and it’s german for hunter or infantryman and I thought it’s like that, because the other name ist hard to pronounce for Germans and that it’s in every language other. Looks like I was wrong
It's got a PU coating on the inside and a snow/storm collar. It's not exactly 'waterproof', but would handle rain no problem. If you expect a heavy downpour or wet environment, always compartmentalize your gear in drybags. Never trust a pack's waterproofing. You always have some gaps, ports, etc.
A friend of mine has one and I've borrowed it quite a bit. Yes, it is very similar to the ILBE. A lot lighter empty weight, though. The ILBE is about 10 pounds and the Jaeger is about 5 pounds empty. Less side straps to get in the way, too. I've owned the ILBE and while it's fine, it's just too much for most anything except as an INCH type bag.
Luke I wish you would find a pack manufacturer that makes a pack for us torso tall guys. I need a pack that fits a 25 inch torso. ANY help would be great. If I'm out of luck I need to know that. Other than a custom pack from Mystery Ranch at $600 I have yet to find one. Can you help me?
Im 6'3, this works for me. There is also Polish brand called Wisport, they have similar type packs in different sizes. Look into them. However i have not used them, but they supply for their own police/special forces as far as i know. So the quality should be high.

savotta means a lumber work site ..you know lumberjacks cutting down trees and piling them to be moved.

Jaeger's in the Napoleonic wars were basically light infantry skirmishers, just like the British 95th and 60th Regt's (see Sharpe's Rifles).

Jaeger (Pronounced YAY-ger) is German for Hunter
Jaegermeister is STRONG liquor, "Hunter's Liquor"
Jaegerschnitzel is Schnitzel with a brown mushroom gravy/sauce, "Hunter's Schnitzel"
You can hear it pronounced in Pacific Rim, since that is what they called the Giant Robots, "Hunters"
Chuck Yaeger being a famous example.

this site rocks . I ordered one of the diy handled skrama knives at 1am est. yesterday and the blade is already on its way across the ocean . these packs look sweet as hell but at the price point it looks like my old alice pack is sticking around for awhile

More days Trip ? I cant understand how. Im not sure Which one my First Backpack will be. Last Time we did 1 full day and Night bushcraft Trip. A Friend got 40L and at it the end it was full (With tarp in it) the Jäger M is enough for things like this ?

depends on your loadout, with the addition of their vertical pouches or särmä XL general purpose pouches on both sides, and some särmä utility straps, easy 5-7 days for me
for just 3 days, the large or xl size would be an overkill imo

I've got a Karrimor Predator 45 which looks the same like this Savotta Jääkäri. It's 45 liters but you can make it smaller with zippers on the side or buy side pockets (for zippers, not only for molle webbing), the material is cordura, and the price is almost the same. For this price, the Karrimor has more to offer, this is the only reason why I'd rather choose that one. I really love this Finnish one though! Karrimor Predator has a 30 l version. That looks almost the same like this Finnish backpack, but that's cheaper. So again: I love this bagpack, I have nothing against it, but you can find the same type of backpack for less money! The Predator 45 looks like an interesting bag, have to admit that. However, Jääkäri backpack is bit slimmer in width, which may be an advantage in tight places, skinng etc. And after a quick look Jääkäri might be a bit more sturdy as a whole with the added back support. Plus the full-lenght zipper opening, which is awesome!
Also note that the Jääkäri is the smaller-mid-size option in the series. Size-wise, the closer match to Predator 45 would be Rajajääkäri-pack: www.varusteleka.com/en/product/savotta-rajajaakari/55550

Dont know if anyone else noticed but top pack cover is removable.
They're very simple and well made, but the price?!! And the webbing would have been nice if there was some webbing going the other direction to strap stuff and not just for pouches.

now that savotta release the new side pouches for jääkäri bacpacks (12, 8, 6, and 4L capacity) and aluminium internal frame for the jääkäri M, i thought maybe you wanna revisit this backpack again with the internal frame and new side pouches, i found that the new 6L pouch to be the most suitable addition for this backpack, but the 8L one is also compatible (judging by the photo at varusteleka), would like hear your opinion about these new items :)

You should review an exo mountain gear 3500 or 5500, they’re made in Idaho, they’re pretty pricey but they look like awesome quality

When it comes to Finnish language one vowel is short and two are long. :-)

either Varusteleka got the sizes wrong on this pack...or it's not the pack on the Savotta website....the pack on the Savotta website is 22L. Varusteleka says it's 30L. Maybe special made for Varusteleka??
Actually both are correct. The main pocket is 22l, but fully over packed the maximum capacity is about 30l.

What you call waterbottle pockets are made to secure gear like axes and so on actually. Jääkäri is hunter but used for light infantry historically. Jägare in swedish, jäger in german and so on. ä is not the same sound as a and ö is not the same sound as o.
“Jaeger” is really wrote “Jäger” [ˈjɛːɡɐ] and it’s german for hunter or infantryman and I thought it’s like that, because the other name ist hard to pronounce for Germans and that it’s in every language other. Looks like I was wrong

This pack looks very much like an Eberlestock Gunslinger (the earlier model) but without the rifle sleeve. Excellent find, Luke! :-)
is this pack waterproof? it looks like that?
It's got a PU coating on the inside and a snow/storm collar. It's not exactly 'waterproof', but would handle rain no problem. If you expect a heavy downpour or wet environment, always compartmentalize your gear in drybags. Never trust a pack's waterproofing. You always have some gaps, ports, etc.

A friend of mine has one and I've borrowed it quite a bit. Yes, it is very similar to the ILBE. A lot lighter empty weight, though. The ILBE is about 10 pounds and the Jaeger is about 5 pounds empty. Less side straps to get in the way, too. I've owned the ILBE and while it's fine, it's just too much for most anything except as an INCH type bag.

Luke I wish you would find a pack manufacturer that makes a pack for us torso tall guys. I need a pack that fits a 25 inch torso. ANY help would be great. If I'm out of luck I need to know that. Other than a custom pack from Mystery Ranch at $600 I have yet to find one. Can you help me?
Im 6'3, this works for me.
There is also Polish brand called Wisport, they have similar type packs in different sizes. Look into them. However i have not used them, but they supply for their own police/special forces as far as i know. So the quality should be high.
