@Encore1234567890 Most likely more of a symptoms of the early color system and its related gear and/or the deterioration of the tape itself. Also, remember that there were very few color TV sets then and the vast majority of people were watching in black and white, so the set and wardrobe people had to make sure that the image looked good in black and white first. That was more important.
NBC was connected with RCA who were producing color TV sets and, naturally, trying to sell them to American viewers. CBS and ABC did not have the same incentive and lagged behind in color. That made NBC the Peacock Network with those beautiful tail feathers. Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color would come along later in September, 1961. “The world is a carousel of color.”
Note the change of audio quality when Ed Herlihy comes on at 1:45 and talks about Kraft Margarines. This would suggest that Berle's show was being taped in one city, while Herlihy was speaking from a studio in another city. In a period from the late 1940s to about early 1978, the unusual audio that you would hear from ABC, NBC and CBS programs was a byproduct of the AT&T coax-microwave system that fed network shows to stations around the country.
you are correct. Berle's show was in Burbank. Herlihy's Kraft spots were done live from NBC New York's studio 3K, which had a full kitchen for use in Kraft commercials.
Wow thanks for posting this the video looks great I use it to demonstrate my CTC 11 vintage color TV... Any chance I'm downloading more of these clips or entire shows if they even exist
Thanks for posting this another great video it will look great on my vintage roundie TV. How amazing it is to see some of these old clips and they're still in such good condition. Is there any chance that you would have the full length version or know where it is available I think a lot of us would be interested in that as well. Thanks again for posting very much appreciated
I can't believe it's been almost 60 years since this broadcast. It's an excellent copy. Count Basie was great.
Color videotape 1959......wow!

Joe Williams.... Great singer... AND.. Played one of the Grandfathers on the Cosby Show...
Pure gold!
And wither Kraft goest, Ed Herlihy shall follow...
10:22 Berle: "How was that?"
Basie: "Bad."
7:35 - Count Basie
Personal income tax deadlines used to be March 15, until 1955. Not sure why a March 18 special referenced 'tax time' in 1959.
Amazing footage! Might you be able to send me the program in its entirety?

I thought Berle’s schtick was
that “who cares if I can’t do anything or not funny. I got a big stick.”
Can you post the rest of this?
Letterman copied a lot from Uncle Milty.
