Discovering Europe's Underwater Village

- In this video, I explored Ballinahown. A village in Wicklow Ireland that was fully submerged in the 1940s to make way for Ireland's biggest hydroelectric plant. Many families lost their homes and farmers lost their jobs. In this video I found out why this happened, what happened to the families and the mysteries surrounding it all. Over 5000 acres of Irish countryside gone within 3 years never to be seen again.

Very fascinating topic with a very well made video to go along with it! Lots of research and information with a good sense of humour, all in 10 minutes. Really appreciate some content on niche and local Irish history as rare as it is, i hope your channel does well 🙏
Thank you so much, really appreciate that🙌🏻 thanks for checking it out!
Yooooo blessington man here I love the history of the area so glad I randomly came across this video and channel 100% subscribing ❤❤
Glad you found it and thank you :))
ESB did the same thing in the Gearagh, outside Macroom, Cork. It was one of europes last ancient oak forests. Very sad.
Bastards 🥲
Rosslare Fort Village in Wexford Harbour is also submerged near Ravens Point. It sometimes appears on low tides depending on the shift of the sandbars etc. You can sometimes make out the walls, buildings and two piers on google earth depending on updated satellite imagery
Never heard of it, will have to have a look!
Well done, Cian, an absolute fantastic video and content, the history of the lakes story was very well told.. Hopefully , more like these videos to come. Liked and subscribed.

There was a village in Dripsey co cork. when the water dam was built on the river lee the village was submerged ❤
Will have to do some research on that one
Plenty of villages in Spain have also disappeared for the same reasons as Ballinahown did.
Como el Embalse del Ebro
I think many rivers shall be disappearing now. Sadly
Very well made video. This popped up on my recommendations I'm glad I watched the entire thing. +1 sub
Thank you :))
Caminto Del Rey just north of Malaga in Spain did the same to build hydro for the now Costa del Sol. Well worth a visit

Thanks loogy 🫶🏻
Good stuff i never new real back round on the lake and ppl moved out of there homes..i did years of fishing up there....
XLNT.
My father and his friends (he was born in 1917, I was quarried in 1950) used to fish and camp out there from Dublin on weekends and always referred to it as the King's River. He told us about the flooding.
We often drove out weekends in the '50s and in the '60s myself and the brother and pals cycled and camped all over Wicklow.
There was a drought (at least one very dry year) and buildings could be seen from the bridge the water levels dropped so low.
I thought there was a spire or tower of some description to be seen at least one year, but thats fadó, fadó.
That’s so cool, must have been so interesting to see it back then!
@@Ciangannon It was fairly matter-of-fact, the Da having just told the story to try to stop the back seat racket of me and the brothers.
He had a box of tiny photographs of the area, but I baled out abroad early ('67) and I don't know if they got skipped or are still somewhere. I'm not in a position to find out, and other priorities dominate. I've been west of the Shannon for a long time and not great at maintaining links. I won't go into it....friends, as someone said, being god's apology for inflicting family on us.
RIP Ballinahown
Was looking for someone to do a modern take on this topic, thanks 🙏
Well done and than you for that. I found it really interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Good work. Thanks.
Thank you!!
My God, baggies are back and they’re even baggier than last time.
No we were not properly paid for our land , it was a cruel cpo...my father was the last child born there ...we had a race horse called ballinahouan in the 90s
It's an eye sore to me looking at it , the scars from that event , effected all 77 families
Great video thank you.
Glad you liked it!
What a video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you🫶🏻🫶🏻
Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal has also a man made lake, for the Hydro Station. There may also be houses under the lake.
Will have to check it out :)
You should look into the flooding of the Lee valley for the Lee dam in cork in the 60s.

Hey I actually live in Wicklow id be curious in taking my scuba gear and checking this place out thanks for the idea! I could tie my braided nylon line to one of the poles on the shore for safety. Might buy one of those underwater go pros to share what’s down below
That would be really cool!! If it’s safe enough to do it you definitely should!
My ancestors had a farm there
No way!! Where abouts?
I think the church sticks out up were the theres remains of building is the lane way wen u pass the equestrian place continue straight down
There's no church under there 😂

Why not discovering Ireland's underwater village?
your curly haired friend doesnt look Irish, where is he from?
My great grandfather was from there. And moved to Dublin as a young man. Unfortunately he was killed by a horse. On the drumcondra road outside the skylon hotel. On the 15th of march 1919 . His name was JOSEPH MALONE.☘️🇮🇪🙏✝️✝️
Did he have any stories of the village? And sorry to hear that
