Hogwood's recordings of Haydn symphonies reign supreme. I have listened to Dorati, fischer, Davies, Bruggen... and other eminent conductors. But there is a precision and lightness of touch about Hogwood's recordings that sets him apart.

Whilst retaining their places in the history of recorded performances - sometimes very special places - all previous attempts at cycles and selections, will be superseded by the on-going Haydn 2032 project conducted by Giovanni Antonini when completed in the tercentenary year of Haydn’s birth.

LDC

Haydn's 94th is known as the "Surprise Symphony", but many other of his symphonies could better own that title, and this 60th surely is one of them. Each movement here has its' own surprises and delights. It must have been written for a special occasion, to ensure that it was a memorable one!

After listening to this work so many times, I think this is the most perceptive comment I have ever read about it. Each movement has its surprises, but having to stop and retune so near the climax has to be the silliest surprise of the all.
Very post-modern, a couple of centuries before the term was coined.

Actually Haydn didn’t think so and later referred to it slightingly in Austrian dialect as ‘…den altern schmarrn’ = that old pancake (pancake meaning nonsense)*.
You’re right though, it is invariably very successful when performed, and is a very enjoyable and satisfying half-hour’s music, though rather like Mozart’s spectacular sounding Symphony 31 ‘Paris’ (K297), both works whilst popular and effective, are some way short of their respective composers’ greatest symphonies.
      * The comment was provoked when the Empress no less expressed a wish to hear the symphony again.

It has to do with the title, "Il distratto" - distracted. The point is that, as a result of absent-mindedness, the musicians took some wrong sheets and suddenly played a different symphony - a direct reference to Symphony No. 45.
