    Thanks so much for the reasonable and responsible explanation. The explosion of mass market drones has led to way too many folks flying them in unsafe areas or conditions. In CA we've repeatedly had air drops from fire planes interrupted by recreational drones in their airspace filming the fires. Keep up the great work on the channel and stay safe.

  • @hgbugalou
    @hgbugalou 6 ปีที่แล้ว +106

    Thanks for not just doing it and looking into it. Far too many people do not respect the lives they could impact by flying a drone in airspace. Being some what familiar with Aviation rules though, if the airport is controlled (has a tower) you can call them and schedule something. They will just close the approach/departure for the 15 minutes it takes and depending on the wind, the approach maybe closed for the day already. This will not be hard to do and the tower/FAA will be grateful for such a formal request as these days, most people would just do it without a second thought.

    • @AD66Liberty
      @AD66Liberty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Agree, try calling the tower and asking for a window to film. I'm x distance from the approach end of runway (16 or 34) and want to briefly film from a drone Is there a time you can fit me in this morning, afternoon. General Aviation airports have less traffic on weekdays, so they should be able to fit you in. Good Luck

    For all of those concerned about the airport and its services, it's RBG (the FAA identifier), it's at 534' MSL (above mean sea level), it has a single 5000' runway running ≈N/S (16/34), and it's uncontrolled. That means there are no ATC services or restrictions. That there is no tower, suggests the traffic count is fairly low--it's not a "commercial" airport (5000' of runway indicates that, too). The recommended pattern altitude of 1700' (1200 above the airport) suggests there are terrain features within about five miles of the field, as pattern altitude is typically 800' elsewhere. The property is not in the flight path, as we consider a straight line along the axis of the runway, although it lies below the traffic pattern (mostly when aircraft are landing and taking off north).
    Although I didn't work in a tower, I did ATC for a living for 30 years and I've been a licensed pilot for 50.

    Go to the airport and ask about helicopter flights. If you find the crew of the next flight you might be able to persuade them to shoot some footage as they fly over the area. I would think a simple GoPro would be easy enough to point at the ground for 10 seconds or so. I work at an airport and most of the pilots are a lot friendlier than people think, and they can sympathize with the limitations their careers cause to others like yourself.

  • @Rouverius

    I'm sure we'll figure it out. One idea is a pole aerial technique. It's lightweight camera (like a GoPro) mounted on a telescoping pole (like a lighting stand or even higher with a boom pole). You might be able to buy or craft a custom fitting to mount it to something you already have on-hand (a shop extension pole, extendable tree trimmers, a lineman's telescoping hot stick, etc.).
    In any case, I greatly respect you for obeying the law in this. And thanks for thinking of ways to keep us all engaged here.

    SUGGESTION: I know it's a bit late for this build, but if you decide to do another build, you could always tie a camera to a scissor lift or some other piece of construction equipment, and move that into position. May not give you the complete overhead you get with a drone, but it's durable without messing about filing flight plans with the tower.

    • @jackielinde7568
      @jackielinde7568 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another suggestion: Pilots are looking for excuses for more fly time. Offer to pay for part of their fuel if they film your property from either approach or take off. ;)

    I’ve flown into the Roseburg airport a few times and I can guess where your spec house is just because of the geography of the ridge to the west of the airport. When you are on the downwind to runway 34 you actually can not see the airport because of that ridge if you fly at pattern altitude, but it does seem that if you did not fly higher than the tree tops behind your spec house, you might be ok. No aircraft will ever be that low. You look to be below two separate ridge tops with the ridge towards the airport higher than the ridge behind your spec house. Have a chat with the airport manager and some of the local pilots. You might be ok to fly down in that little valley you are in, but you do want to do it legally.

    Brother, I’m a pilot in the Air Force, and I really appreciate your respect for the regulations that are out there. Drones have a way of getting sucked into jet engines, and it’s always expensive and sometimes dangerous. That said, if you’re not opposed to filling out some paperwork, it may be worth calling over to the airfield manager and asking for permission. Drone pilots are pilots too, and if the airspace isn’t too busy, they should be able to work with you guys. Love the videos...

    Since you always have someone filming for you, I would suggest a Charter's pole with a gimbal on top. That way you can reach about 20 feet in the air. Probably safer than a drone too when you are doing framing etc later on. Not cheap, but very easy to increase production value easily and get shots from unique angles when you want without having to save batteries for the drone or make an appointment with your friend to come film.

Another possibility is a cable mounted camera :-) cheers...

    You might check at the field, often at those uncontrolled fields there is a place for all the pilots to congregate and if there are hangers for private use with office space on most days you will find several guys just hanging out talking about planes or thinking about planes and looking for any excuse to go up and take a lap. It probably wouldn't be very hard to get one of them to take you up for a quick fly over and that might make some decent areal footage.

    So you actually can fly a drone in the area of an airport... with the express consent of the airport or the FAA. I would maybe go in and ask them to see if there is a good time when you can do it, and if there is a floor to that approach you can stay under. Either way you can definitely make a drone flight possible over that house.

    One decent idea I've seen is to attach a camera to a crane, be it the crane from the Tool Tank, or some other crane that shows up at the site.
    The drawback with that is that no one is there to man the camera, you can't really see what you're recording or swap out memory cards if you can't reach the camera (unless it's a bucket crane, but who wants to sit up there all day in the bucket?).
    The only way to see what you're recording is to view it on a phone, usually there's apps that can connect to the camera wirelessly (maybe through Bluetooth or a mobile hotspot/WiFi) but even then, not all cameras have that feature.
    Even after that, you still have to keep lowering the crane to swap out memory cards.
    It sure is a fighting battle just for some aerial footage, it seems simple but there's a lot of head scratching.

I won't link it here (can't imagine anyone would want to cause you problems, but why risk it?). It looks like a nice area. Your videos made me think it was located further from services and retail than it actually is. Looks like the buyer won't have too many adjacent neighbors, either.

    Actually you can fly a drone around the airport. You just need to call the Roseburg airport manager and request permission. You'll probably need to agree on a date and time but it's likely possible. The manager is listed as Nikki Messenger (541) 672-7701. Pattern altitude is 1500 MSL so if you were to stay within a few hundred feet of the ground you should be good. The only legal restriction is that you must get permission from any airport within 5 miles of where you intend to fly.

    If you really want to do it, you can try filing a formal flight plan at the airport, and scedule the airtime with their Air Traffic Control Supervisor. They'd schedule your Cessna, they might just let you fly that drone at an off time when there's very light, or no air traffic.

    You can always call the FAA and ask if it is OK to take aerial footage from a flying anvil instead.
    I bet you they haven't heard that one before.

  • @YakNasty
    @YakNasty 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Late to the party but if you still want to get some aerial shots your friend can put in a FAA Airspace Authorization Request as a Remote Pilot. Even with the proximity of the airport I would think you should get approval as long as the maximum altitude is low enough. This is a 90 day request which is a downside, but it would be legal so no worries there. Roseburg and the surrounding aerodromes do not have any towers so you would just need to submit the request and see how it goes. I can't imagine it being denied if in the request it calls out a 15 minute flight under 50-100 feet with spotters looking for air traffic as part of the crew under the PIC.

    Just have to call ATC and the airport manager and give them notication - these are TWO separate phone calls. I live 5 miles of an airport and researched it and also have my FAA 7711-1 form (107 Authorization) but not required for 1 time flight. With the 107 I just have to check the TFR for the nearby airport for any restrictions at the time of flight.
    When calling ATC you can ask if there will be any traffic overhead at your GPS location - remember unless landing, aircraft have to stay above 500ft

    • @lrodpeterson3046
      @lrodpeterson3046 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The airport manager has no authority to approve. There is no ATC at the airport--it is uncontrolled. The nearest airport with a tower is OTH (North Bend). Even if it does have a collocated approach control with radar, it is 38 miles away, right at the limits of terminal radar, and iffy at the altitudes (and terrain) we're discussing.
      The next nearest airport with a tower, and more likely to have a radar approach control is either MFR (Medford) or EUG (Eugene). The same coverage discussion applies, however. In any event, it's not likely that either of them provide ATC services.
      According to the approach chart I found, ZSE (Seattle ARTCC) provides instrument ATC services, and unless they have a radar site nearby, they won't be able to see any better than a nearby approach control. Although there were no drones flying when I was working, I thought about your suggestion of calling ATC (which you really meant as the non-existent tower) and imagined how I would have handled such a call.
      There was a way to determine lat/longs on the radar scope, but I don't think there were all that many other controllers who knew how to do it. The subject didn't come up much in ZAU (Chicago ARTCC), where I worked. And the technique is kind of broad strokes, in any event.
      Insofar as ATC is concerned no airplanes enroute are going to be any lower than probably 5000' (that's the initial approach altitude on the approach chart), and based on the 4250' peak northeast of the airport, the MVA (minimum vectoring altitude) is likely more like 6,000 or 7,000'. Also, the fact that the procedure is a VOR-A type approach means there's not a lot of demand for more precision approaches there.

    Have watched all your videos. Thanks a ton for producing them. Looking forward to watching this project come together. Completed my carpentry apprenticeship a couple years ago. Went back to school to finish an undergrad degree (done as of next week!). Am really inspired to get back into building - Honestly I think I want to be you when i'm your age! I'm itching to get back out working with my hands and developing new skills. Love all the construction tips, and also appreciate how you are walking us through all the steps of this build as both the builder and owner/client.
    Also..... If anyone hasn't asked yet, i'd love to buy your truck if you ever decide to part with it!

    Judging by the natural topography of your spec house site, I would have thought a drone was overkill for gaining an overview. Get up on the high side and mount a Go Pro on a pole, remote it from your phone - you will get very useable footage without the drama of a drone.

    We constantly have problems during fire season with drones! I didn’t want licensing of them before. I do now! Drone pilots needs to learn what certain things are like a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction)..Wildifres Where Air tankers and helicopters and air attack are flying have a minimum of 5 mile radius TFR. I almost hit one season before last inflight. Suck one into an intake and it’s all over! He’s a smart man...

    Uh oh, I used to live in a house close to a big airport. The planes (the Big planes) would fly right at almost tree top (or so it seemed, they were So LOUD) especially in the middle of the night. ... you probably shouldn't reveal that to your prospective buyers. let them find out on their own. lol .... that was way back in the early early 1970s, as a kid I loved it. Then they changed the flight patterns in and out and then the fun was all over.

    Hello from DownUnder, love the channel!
    Re your drone flight issue, in Australia you can apply for approval to fly in restricted airspace (ie near airports etc.) from our Civil Aviation Authority. Not sure how it works in the USA, be it could be worth asking the question.
    Another suggestion is to attach a camera to huge pole and get "aerials shoots" that way. If this is possible and you can secure the camera pole rig you could also shoot a time lapse sequence.
    Any way that my two cents worth keep up the good work.
    Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
    Cheers
    Dave

    Regulations aside, any pilot who flies over that lot has clearly failed to note a considerable bulk of earth looming dangerously near. A drone would be a minor consideration compared to the rising terrain immediately off his wingtip.
    Scott, tell us about zoning regs. Homes appear to vary more in size and exterior finish than a development allows here, and apartments seem to lie in their midst, rather than on the edges of a subdivision or commercial area.

    Try calling the ATCs at the airport and ask for a time window to go up to 600ft AGL (should be plenty). Most likely they will give you one. Make sure to call them back when you are done with the drone flights.

  • @BrianDaleNeeley
    @BrianDaleNeeley 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you tried talking to the airport, and seeing if you could get some sort of special permission? You may have to file a flight plan, just like a pilot that would be taking off or landing, but i would think if /should/ be possible.
    If *ALL* else fails, since the property is below an existing approach lane, it should be possible to get a camera on a small aircraft, and get footage while it's landing. I realize that renting a plane (& pilot) just to get some footage would be cost prohibitive, you should be able to find someone that flies into the airport regularly, who would be willing to let you put a camera on the plane's belly.
    I am not a pilot, nor do I even know any, so there may be a dozen reasons why this wouldn't be possible, but it at least worth checking into.

    It does not look like you are in a flight path, the runway is not pointing towards the lot.
    Fly a small drone like a Spark or a Mavic Pro up to 40 feet and let it hover in tripod mode and get an overhead shot. If a plane comes in that low the trees and hillside are a bigger problem than the drone ever thought of being.
    The lot is a mile away from the runway, and technically not supposed to fly a drone within 5 miles according to FAA guidelines, but in this instance using it as an overhead tripod at reasonable heights is well... reasonably safe.
