Hello Jason and MzeroA nation, this is Pappa B and I'm at the 20/20. For today's topic, I say yes there is no issue for me to decide on a go around. It is like those times in sports when you know if the shot was good or bad before hand. I have done a go around many times and have no issue at all. If it doesn't feel right, don't push it..
A partnership I was in years ago with a group of terrific mentors had a rule that they told me very early on. Our home field had a well earned reputation for strong gusty crosswinds on the only runway. There was another airport about 10 minute flight/half hour drive away where the diurnal winds tended to be much better aligned and predictable. The rule was if you made the decision to go around and land elsewhere because of the winds, or even if you made that decision just based on the reported weather (no need to go "look and see"), the partnership would cover the cost of flight time for the day and someone would drive to pick you up, no questions asked. It was a recognition and thank you for excellent decision making with the group's plane. The rule was used and no one ever took advantage of the group.
What a great message with, “If you are not humble in aviation, aviation will humble you.” That can also be taken in the same light on AC maintenance side, which I am transitioning from now.
Best advice I dole out to my students...a landing is a lost opportunity for a go-around. Makes total sense to them.. and keeps them safe. Great series as always Jason
My Instructor has a brilliant casual way of encouraging students to Go Around- on early solos he simply says, "Don't forget, if there is anything you are not happy with just chuck it away." That makes it seem so easy. He also had me practice them a lot, so it's all automatic and no drama.
When I was working on my helicopter license it was the middle of a hot summer and the field on the approach end of the runway had just been plowed. That nice, fresh black dirt made some wild thermals. I did four consecutive go-arounds, because I just couldn't get down. It was getting really old, but I finally got it right and was able to descend and make a good approach.

Recently got checked out in a Warrior. Gusty 80 degree crosswind day and instructor was impressed with my first landing. However, I was most proud of my decision to go around on the second approach after the plane ballooned twice. Short-ish runway and even though I reasonably sure I could have gotten it down and stopped in plenty of time, I just didn't want to take the chance and figured it wasn't worth it. So yeah, I'll go around.
I am a VFR pilot, and Crosswind landings are the times I catch myself saying "I can save this", that is the time to go around. Thank you for the videos.
Yep I said this same thing three weeks ago when the crosswind pushed me waaaay over the centerline on my base turn... I should've gone around but instead cheated my way back to the centerline🤦♂have regretted it since!
20/20 Haven't been checking in everyday because I was lazy...but I am watching AND LEARNING!!! A lot of this is refreshers, but proficiency is king!!! You have inspired me to go out and just see how proficient I am in some of those "lost maneuvers". Jason, you and your team are a true blessing to aviation. As I have told you before, for me, your teaching style is right up my alley. I get it when you explain things versus other instructors/schools I've have in the past, so I truly appreciate MZeroA!!! 20/20. Just like when I brief my takeoff, I EXPECT to abort the takeoff... for shooting an approach, I EXPECT to Go missed. This really helps reduce the startle effect for either situation - especially since both of these scenarios are probably the riskiest due to low altitude.
Still here. Haven't commented every day, but 20/20. The missed approach/go-around maneuvers are one of several instances in flying where you hope for the best, but 100% absolutely plan for the worst!
20 for 20. I promise to go around when something is not right. My instructor regularly had me practice go arounds. Sometime right on the flare of what would have been a perfect landing. Thank you for this reminder that a go around is not a failure.
Definitely important to go around. I always promote my students to go around when they are unstable on approach. Also one thing to remember is when you're at minimums and you're still a little ways to go for missed approach point. If you see only the white lights, you can decend to 100 ft AGL and still look for the red side row or red terminating bars. Once you see those. You can continue and land

20/20 Thank you for all the great information in this series. On one of my first few solo flights I had to make two missed approaches upon returning to our airport. I was so thankful that my instructor taught me how to do that.

20/20! Been lazy in checking in. I took my dad up flying recently and had to do a go around and now my sister gives me flak about "missing" the runway. I know she is joking, but I still see it as being safe. This is a great instructional tool and always gives me more to think about after the video.

20 for 20 I’m telling you i never did a go around other than on practice engine failures until after my ppl checkride. I always had this idea of when you are on final, you have to land. But it’s just the opposite. A wise pilot once said, every time you come in to land, come down with the intention of a go around and if everything looks perfect when you get there, then you land. Go arounds are not a sign of failure! They are a result of good judgment and safety concerns. A go around is one of the biggest tools that you have to save yourself from a bad landing or crash! Let’s all be humble and do a go around if necessary!
20 for 20. I'm not IFR rated but I have done go arounds. Just the other day I was too high on my approach so did a go around. While I was doing transition training in August for my newly finished RV-12 I also did a go around without instructor prompting. It's a vital tool to have available.

20/20 one of my first IFR landings in real IMC down to minima and no runway, so went missed and somewhere else. There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots!
Hey Jason, been following you for some time now and find this to be a very important topic. I have had to do a few go around now do to strong crosswinds that come put of no where. Feels stupid at first till you hear all the other pilots do it all the time. Even the experienced ones. So my promise to you is I will continue to do my go around and not feel funny doing them anymore. Bruce
Hi! 20/20 I am not an FI, just a basic VFR pilot but I go -around when I feel necessary as often as needed. Sometimes some friends are teasing me. I don”t care. The go-around is a ”normal” procedure, hard landing or crash are not. From yesterday, I like the ” blood and fire”...

I hate going around a second time, but for the sake of good practice and everyone’s safety, even with my CFI on board, I will go around that second or third time (or find another airport). Excellent series Jason, excellent message! My flying school drives the message, “every landing is a failed go around”. I did a couple the other day, wasn’t happy with the approaches. It was a matter of pride that I recognised the bad approaches (gusting winds), and went around for better ones. Enjoying the series.

20/20. I once went around 3 times and then diverted because I couldn't handle the winds. Yes the ego takes a blow, but the airplane, pilot and passengers stayed in one piece. I will always go around when the pilot and/or conditions are not right.

When I’m teaching landings, I start with teaching slow flight down the runway which, among its other advantages, always ends in a go around. I teach that our goal is ALWAYS to simply fly as close to the runway as we can WITHOUT touching, until we go around, and that touching the wheels to the runway is actually the failure of what we intended to do. The nice thing is. When the time comes that they do fall in that way, it’s usually the nicest landing anyone could hope for 😊
On one of my 1st cross country solo - I had 3 go arounds ( too high, too fast, too much adrenaline). Talked myself into relaxing and getting the 182 (471JM) on the ground!! I was going to go around until I got a “stabilized approach!”
Back on track with 20 for 20 on day 20. Going around has never been an issue for me. Don't know why. I went around on the first of my three first solo touch-and-goes. One of my early instructors must have built it into me because my more recent instructors always act ... well ... not sure if it's surprised or impressed, but I've never been criticized.
20/20 Thanks for these videos. A month or so ago, on my first solo in the school's 172 at my uncontrolled airport I had an interesting go around experience and a lesson learned. I was in the pattern making my calls with traffic in front of me. On the downwind I noticed a twin Beech was pulling onto the runway after the traffic ahead of me had touched down. As I turned base and final I assumed that the twin would take off before I would land. However, it didn't depart, so I did a go around. This is where I learned a lesson. I did not offset my path at that point which would have allowed me to see the runway below me. As I was over the runway the twin took off. My instructor was watching and called on the radio for me to "turn right". I complied but didn't know why at that time because I couldn't see the twin taking off. In a follow up by my instructor the explanation was given that there was a radio/headphone problem on the other aircraft and the two pilots on board did not hear my calls. I'm a little skeptical of that explanation. I suspect they were on the wrong frequency because there were other aircraft making calls and they should have expected to hear something. The lesson learned was to fly an offset pattern over the runway if I am ever in a similar situation.
20 for 20. I regularly go around. Not too long ago we had strong crosswinds at my airport and I was flying an RV12, which doesn't do great in high crosswinds. I went around 3 times before landing. I had already told myself that if I did a 4th go around, I was flying to another nearby area that has a cross wind runway. But I was able to land the 4th time.
I take my aircraft to an airpark for annual each year. I have an A&P friend who is gracious enough to let me use his hanger, and helps me with the annual. At least twice, I've had to go around for wildlife on the runway, and one other time I was coming in too fast. I can't afford to not be ready to go around. Even at my airport where I keep the plane, winds and gusty conditions make it necessary to go around every now and then. So, Yes! I will go around. 20/20

Bounced enough times as a student pilot that “go around” became natural, which is good in the Houston TX area which is rich for windy, gusty days!

When I’m teaching landings, I start with teaching slow flight down the runway which, among its other advantages, always ends in a go around. I teach that our goal is ALWAYS to simply fly as close to the runway as we can WITHOUT touching, until we go around, and that touching the wheels to the runway is actually the failure of what we intended to do. The nice thing is. When the time comes that they do fall in that way, it’s usually the nicest landing anyone could hope for 😊

On one of my 1st cross country solo - I had 3 go arounds ( too high, too fast, too much adrenaline). Talked myself into relaxing and getting the 182 (471JM) on the ground!! I was going to go around until I got a “stabilized approach!”
Back on track with 20 for 20 on day 20. Going around has never been an issue for me. Don't know why. I went around on the first of my three first solo touch-and-goes. One of my early instructors must have built it into me because my more recent instructors always act ... well ... not sure if it's surprised or impressed, but I've never been criticized.

A month or so ago, on my first solo in the school's 172 at my uncontrolled airport I had an interesting go around experience and a lesson learned.
I was in the pattern making my calls with traffic in front of me. On the downwind I noticed a twin Beech was pulling onto the runway after the traffic ahead of me had touched down. As I turned base and final I assumed that the twin would take off before I would land. However, it didn't depart, so I did a go around. This is where I learned a lesson. I did not offset my path at that point which would have allowed me to see the runway below me. As I was over the runway the twin took off. My instructor was watching and called on the radio for me to "turn right". I complied but didn't know why at that time because I couldn't see the twin taking off. In a follow up by my instructor the explanation was given that there was a radio/headphone problem on the other aircraft and the two pilots on board did not hear my calls. I'm a little skeptical of that explanation. I suspect they were on the wrong frequency because there were other aircraft making calls and they should have expected to hear something.
The lesson learned was to fly an offset pattern over the runway if I am ever in a similar situation.
20 for 20. I regularly go around. Not too long ago we had strong crosswinds at my airport and I was flying an RV12, which doesn't do great in high crosswinds. I went around 3 times before landing. I had already told myself that if I did a 4th go around, I was flying to another nearby area that has a cross wind runway. But I was able to land the 4th time.
I take my aircraft to an airpark for annual each year. I have an A&P friend who is gracious enough to let me use his hanger, and helps me with the annual. At least twice, I've had to go around for wildlife on the runway, and one other time I was coming in too fast. I can't afford to not be ready to go around. Even at my airport where I keep the plane, winds and gusty conditions make it necessary to go around every now and then. So, Yes! I will go around. 20/20
