They shud have considered planting trees,shrubs to retain rain water and keep soil fertile naturally.
Build small trenches to gather rain water, a crude version of rain water harvesting.
Concerns for ecology or environment is least concern.

Here in America they use a water truck and pump water down the hole to carry away the debris and they have a tank that circles the well and that carries it away from the hole and truck. And this old well driller told me the best place to drill is on a ant pile the water will be plentiful and taste good ants go where there is good water.
