    Next time you need to grab some odds and ends at the hardware store, grab some drive guides for your drill. Sleeves that guide your screws so they can't slip. I love those things. Great build. So fun!

    Zip lines are fun. I got to ride one in paratrooper school in the Army at Ft. Benning, Ga. We jumped out of a 34 foot tower and rode the zip line about 150 - 200 ft. I've never even thought about building one. Good job.

    ‘To help protect the tree’ we will drill the tree! Just use a hose around the cable where it meets the tree!!

      Yes because a tree... known for growing through concrete, buildings and cars... will be heavily damaged by 8 tiny screws.

    The saddle clamps were installed backwards in this video. The saddles should be on the loaded strand and not the slack strand. A good way to remember this is that you should "never saddle a dead horse".

      Came here to say this. Also at work we call them fist grips because you should install them at least a fists width apart.
      As far as the reason you never saddle the dead end, it's because overtime the shackle portion eats into the line and if you have it on the live end and it severs. You'll be zipping into the ground.

      don't install on dead trees, and don't use a sling end because it will kill them. ( that chokes the nutrient flow through the cambium )
      a dead tree is a dangerous tree.
      instead; use a large auger bit to drill clean through a living tree ( same size as your cable ) string your cable through the hole you drilled in the tree, and take it down, at an angle, to an earth anchor set in concrete in the ground.

  • @ecomotive6158
    @ecomotive6158 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The weight rating on steel cable is for a weight hanging straight down. The cable is strung near horizontally so the tensile strength necessary to hold up a weight is probably 10 times or more. So a 100 lb kid would pull on the cable with a tension of 1000 lbs. Please keep this in mind when sizing your cable.

    Cable clamp installation is critical. There is a correct way and an incorrect way to install the clamps. Make sure you have installed them properly. Hint... You never saddle a dead horse.

    • @bassicnate7409
      @bassicnate7409 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Was just going to post this.
      The saddle goes on the live end because it carries the load. Installing incorrectly (putting the saddle on the dead end) reduces the load capacity by up to 40%. Also very important to tighten the clamps to the correct torque spec. Too loose or too tight can cause failures.
