I love this garden. I used to live more towards coast. Orange County but now retired inland to high desert, 4000 feet. Bought a neglected ecclectic artist built house with almost an acre. Nothing here but some overgrown vines and dead trees and some overgrown for area. Mostly weeds. We are in Owens valley east of Sierras between two mourning ranges. Tomorrow the temps will be 106. In winter when they say it used to only snow 1 or 2 days ew had a week of snow. Interestingly true English lavender survived no issue at all! But I want to do natives of the high desert. Some have roses but not in my repertoire so i have to learn the only thing about thigns dung and coming back...if they do, is a lot less bugs! Too hot for succulents. All my potted ones died. I’m not complaining. Just a new drawing board for me. The closest I think an area like this is high desert of Texas. So may get some plants tether but will check with locals to get correct species for the area. Oh and we have lots of rock ...in the yard. As well as found antique bottles.

You shouldn’t give up. You’ve mostly had bad luck. I live on an acre in the mojave desert, where it gets almost just as cold and hot as where you are. When I first started landscaping I tried all the things I used to do in LA and I failed too many times. Then i started learning new planting methods and i learned how to protect new plants(things like mulch and wind barriers). After I learned those things, i also learned that the right plant makes all the difference. Which is why, i got into planting exclusively natives.
My recommendation for some tough plants that won’t fail you, are Salvia Pachyphylla and eriogonum fasciculatum foliolosum. Those plants are really beautiful and cold and drought tolerant. They’ll attract alot of activity. For trees, try Desert Willows and Populus fremontii. They’re really fast growing and very pretty and tolerate anything that the high desert will throw at it, since they’re natives here

What are some plant names you can remember? Does she still have a list of what she ordered for you? Those purple spires were to die for

I suggest coming into Roger's Gardens and a horticulturist can assist you with selecting plants. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Tearing out original plant set up, and replacing it with what you now have, what was the total price for the update? thanks.

How many people can afford to tear down the house and garden.
