  • One of the best kept secrets in the yacht building world, Finnish builders Baltic wheel their latest 111ft performance superyacht out through the factory doors and she's stunning.
    We take a look at what's been going on in Barcleona as America's Cup teams start to arrive at the Cup venue plus, we catch up with the SailGP Season 4 opener in Chicago.
    We talk to round the world record holder Dee Caffari and Malizia co-skipper Will Harris about their reflections on an extraordinary edition of The Ocean Race and we hear from 11th Hour Racing Team's skipper Charlie Enright about what it feels like to finally be able to lift the trophy.
    There's a review on this year's punchy Round the Island Race while Sea Venture's Nigel Colley talks us through the rise and rise of the shorthanded scene and why the French are so good at it.
    And in a PlanetSail special report, we get exclusive access and head offshore for three days to test the much talked about brand new Outremer 52.

  • @ultramarinus2478
    @ultramarinus2478 ปีที่แล้ว

    The stability effect in extreme situations during foiling (log underwater, unknown shallows, rough seas with waves) kinda seem to me as downplaying any luxury living on the yacht. Ingenious design, but ... a bit to much wild for a fivestar hotel on the water i think.

  • @Alorand
    @Alorand ปีที่แล้ว

    I always wonder to what extent these kinds of designs could be brought back to the age of sail. If you didn't have carbon fiber to work with, and had to carry ship cannons, but you had 21st century design software, how much faster could you make a man-o-war?

  • @christopherwilliams5173
    @christopherwilliams5173 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice foiling

  • @namolokaman2393
    @namolokaman2393 ปีที่แล้ว

    The foiling arm hinges, on the superyatch, look undersized. My guess: one hit on the foil, and the whole assembly will rip off. Another concern, is the relatively shallow rocker: not sure the yatch would handle rough seas very well.

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The foil arm attachments will always be a weak point no matter how sturdy they're made. At a fast enough clip, a lot of damage can occur if a substantial object is encountered. Even if the hinge isn't sheered off, the huge foils could be damaged or torn off. Don't think there's anything that can be done. Same vulnerability with catamaran daggerboards that can cause huge hull damage when hitting something at speed. Since the Baltic also has a keel, at least the arms can be raised in risky waters without sacrificing all the righting moment unlike the keel-less AC yachts.

  • @nigelboyce7282
    @nigelboyce7282 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Clearly a blue water cruiser but berthing in a marina…? The design surely must include folding foils to allow here to berth alongside .
    A design feat for sure but necessity id say.
    Fabulous design tho and clearly we shall be seeing much more of these concepts, a foiling cruiser catamaran? HH cat do something like this but to let 55 tons out the water … wow !

    Regarding the naysayers of the arms, that's just stupid.
    In the human history, all of the sports introduced ideas have trickled down into the civilian , the commercial grade products afterwards. Innovations that were leading edge in the past, are common occurrence in the present.

    • @paulgush
      @paulgush ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Foiling came into sailing from the Moth. And when the cup went with foilers, teams recruited Moth sailors. Like Nathan Outerage said, it's more a case of trickle up than trickle down.

    You should tell also about the danger of cats and trimarans. Catamarans are not safe at all. A catamaran can capsize. And during this year 2023 there has been many cat capsizes in the world. Catamaran is a bad choise in any respect. And there are many more negative things that means that never buy a catamaran, they are pure shit.

    Great episode. I saw it, so i may as well say it, that Baltic is an abomination. Beautifully built, in bad taste and complete lack of practicality.
    An Imoca going full tilt into weeds amd submerged debris is one thing at 7 tonnes, this is another. 5 meter fixed keel is problematic, although fun to watch in the Sydney Hobart.
    Dee makes great points.
    The Fastnet started today, the tracker suggests its been a tough one so far. Chapeau to those crews still out there.
