Oh and a little thing I learned this year that others might want to know… The new DAWN POWER WASH dishwashing liquid that comes in a spray bottle… is EXACTLY like the continuous spray bottles you find for sale online. It’s $5 and you don’t ever have to spray soap out of it if you don’t want to. The sprayer comes off. I just cleaned the bottle and sprayer out after the soap was gone. And it works just as well as the bottle I bought online for $12. Just an FYI.
Good stuff, listen to the end. Highlights; 1. Too much paint on the brush. No need to dip the brush too far. Avoid the brush strokes. It's not the product, it's you. 2. Not using enough water. Spraying just a little makes a huge difference if paint is too thick. (2-tick) 3. Not priming red and dark woods. Learn about woods. When in doubt, prime it. 4. Have 3 brushes, paint, wax top coat. No cross over use. 5. Not washing your furniture. Do it to avoid adhesion problems; not just spray and a towel, get a bucket of water. 6. Not letting the paint dry before second coat. Use thin coats 7. Not letting it completely dry after washing and before painting will cause cracking. 8. Painting over furniture wax unless you remove with mineral spirits then wash. 9. Buying broken, missing parts or smelly, (like cigarette smoke or mold) furniture. 10. Redoing someone else's projects.
Everything was spot on. I’ve been refinishing and painting furniture since I was 16 (67 now) and everything was true. I love #1 and had to laugh. That’s the first thing i try to teach people - whether it’s painting a wall or a dresser - don’t dip the brush all the way in. And dry brushing means a “dry” brush! Great job!
thanks Kacha :) maybe you could do one on brushes, which brushes for different applications, and brush care, cleaning and storing.. i have seen many many on everything else, but none on brushes, this would be very helpful too, the amount i have had to chuck out due to improper cleaning.. smiles from western australia!
I absolutely LOVE to get my grubby hands on freebie stuff that is damaged. I love to fix things, figure out how to make them work again, or repurpose something. BUT I try not to EVER pay for those items! I am an opportunist! If it is sitting beside the dumpster or the side of the road, I swoop in and snap it up!
Thank you Kacha for the reminders. Been there, had a few of those mistakes. As you said, it’s your reputation on the line so I always do quality work. If it’s not quality I don’t sell it!
I really appreciate this wealth of information. I can’t believe you have only been doing this for 5 years. I love to watch your creative process. It gives me inspiration and hope that I can do something similar. Thank you!
Before I started painting with chalk paint I painted a dresser with indoor house paint. I want to re paint without stripping but now I think I'll strip it first to avoid wasting time. So many great tips, thankyou
Hello bautiful Kacha! I haven't start painting with chalk paint yet, I am learning with your videos, this is great video with all your advice. Thank you, I love to see your videos, it gives peace and relaxation, I love it! ❤
Thank you so much Kacha for being the person you are. You give us all thw advices we need to make our home special and feel our days with art. I wish all the best for you!!!
Thank you for your videos. I lost my son two weeks ago and before it happened, he had done an portrait of my dog using colored pencil. It looks like a portrait taken by a camera. Remembering I use to draw decently well it inspired me to begin again. I had to cut my dog out of the picture as it wasn’t completed so I began researching and found decoupaging. Thank you for your inspiring videos. I love them!❤️
From years of personal experience and resesrch: cigarette smoke NEVER comes completely off of or out of any material, with glass beinging the only possible exception. Cigarette smoke residue will eventually migrate up through shellac and every other sealing finish such as varnish and paint. Mold spores can survive in a dormant state for many years to decades, and will actively grow again when given warmer moist conditions unless it is completely killed before shellac is applied. That requires treating absolutely every surface including inside joints, under drawerer slides, and under lose veneer. Mold is a nightmare. Intense ozone treatments can help kill mold spores, but that's challenging itself. My husband and I live in the old pier and beam farmhouse that he grew up in that is almost 100 years old. This house did not have central AC or heat until 2008. When we started working on the house before we moved in, mold was growing on lampshades, the furniture, woodwork, and inside cabinets inside this house, and it is still inside walls. Sequestration, ozone, and chemical treatments have made living in the house possible. Unfortunately, I experience anaphylaxis when exposed to most molds. It's not worth the risk of buying any furniture that has a moldy odor because mold odor indicates actively growing spores. Yeah, mold is a nightmare.
@Tacha thank you for inspiring me to bring out my creativity again by painting the furniture found discarded . It really bothers me seeing a beautiful piece thrown away for very minor things. We are to much of a throwaway society when so many things are still useful . Not to mention it takes my mind off those we’ve lost in the past year , it helps so much . Thank you ! ♥️ Dolly from the North !
Dear Kacha - You are most helpful. Much thanks! You are the one who got me to ONLY use ONE brush for my topcoats. I saw a few others mixing their brushes but I stuck with your way. Very, very happy that I did. I love my brushes and keeping them to their own jobs. Cheers to you and the pups - Ivy.
Thank you so much for these wonderful information. I just both a beautiful night stand thinking I was a vintage piece and when for it side unseen. The biggest mistake ever I’m so sad, I feel that I should have known better, I knew better but here I am with a piece of plywood.. IM GOING TO PUT ON THE SIDE. Your are so talented and inspiring
I have been stalking your videos for a long time because I’m a “newbie” and I know even though it looks fairly easy I have a lot to learn! Thank you so much for all your knowledge and expertise! I finally dove in and I’m hooked! Painting has become my solace 🥰
I so agree with all your tips. There are too many "painters" on youtube that are sloppy, have drips inside drawers, don't paint the sides, etc. I often wonder what those pieces look like after a year when gobs of paint are applied and brushes are filled with tons of paint. I've seen so many times a brush dipped completely in the paint to where the paint drips off the brush and you can hear the brush going over the piece because it has so much paint. I love watching you because you take your time, are neat and your pieces look extremely professional. One painter I actually stopped watching because she often said "I don't care it will look fine" slop, slop, slop with paint. Keep up the wonderful videos and lovely music. You are an artist.
Hi Kacha. I love all your points and I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been in the business & flipping furniture for 9 years now but I’m going to tell you a story I’ve NEVER told anyone else because it’s sooo embarrassing and I’m mortified when I look back….BUT on the flip side of the coin, I’m also quite glad it happened and happened on my very first piece as I learnt so so much from it. Ok so I got into this as a hobby in 2012. It was something I was really interested in. I had watched hundreds if not thousands over the years before I took the plunge myself. It was my very FIRST piece and I drove quite far to collect it. It was a smallish tv unit with glass doors and when you opened the glass doors it had two shelves (for like a video player/dvd & also a sky box. I decided to do the two shelves with decoupage. Again another skill I had never done before. I used wallpaper and not napkins or rice paper/transfer paper. My shelves actually turned out beautifully. And the vision I had for this piece was just plain white. In fact I used Annie Sloan - Old White chalk paint. And then I wanted it heavily distressed. So I did my first coat and I’m thinking to myself wow this is going better than I thought. I let it dry for hours before I did the next coat. When I went back to do the next coat I had a brownish stain just on the right side of the piece. At this point I had no idea what bleed through was 😬 so I sanded it and done the second coat. I left it overnight and next morning went to it and again this brown stain was still there. Instead of asking my friends who many do this for a living or some just as a hobby or I could have even googled it, I didn’t! I just powered through and stupidly put a third coat on but SUPER SUPER thick. Well the end of the story goes like this. I ended up putting 5 coats on in total. Two that were normal & then three that were super mega thick. I used 3/4 of a tin of my NEW Annie Sloan chalk paint on one very small piece 🤣 was such a very expensive lesson to learn but so glad I did learn it. And I still proudly displayed it in my living room with the brown stain facing the wall haha. I had put the paint on that thick that when I came to distress the piece I couldn’t do it with a piece of sandpaper as it was too thick. I had to get my palm sander out lmao 😂😂
Thank you. I enjoy all your videos. You are a great teacher. You are very generous in sharing your knowledge. I am becoming more and more confident of being able to tackle a refinishing project. Thank you again.
Kacha!! This was so so helpful! Thank you. I'm working on my first piece and love all your information. I Love Love your work! Oh and I saw another video where you used "The Pink Stuff". Well its a miracle product!.
Thank you for this video today. I wish you would’ve told me these mistakes when I first started painting. I’ve already made quite a few them 😝. But I’m getting better and more paint. Thanks again you’re the greatest!🙂
Thank you very much for your hard earned advice. I'm very sure some will listen and not learn but mostly they will. It is not often that artisans will share their best secrets. Your work is bloody awesome. ♥️♥️♥️
I've started watching your videos some time ago, and want to say that all you are doing is so artistic and so professional! I like what you said about connectivity of all steps - this is so simple and so true 👍 I would also add that the personality of the artist, the author of all these masterpieces!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you , Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I just finished my first chalk paint project and I'm glad I followed the directions. Your tips are so helpful. Wrote them down.
Kasha, first want to thank you for the wealth of information you so generously share with us. You are exactly like the cool, big sister we all wish we had. I found you on You tube, and love watching how talented and creative you are.
Kacha I love you and your art so much! Thank you for this top 10! Even though I have listened to your advice all along the way in your You Tube journey I really love that you put it all together in a list. I have done every single thing you have advised and my pieces are coming out beautifully and I know because of your advice I have avoided some horrible mistakes! Thank you again lady you're the best!
Re the use of water.......I have well water and it unfortunately has iron in it in addition to other minerals. So to keep my paint "pure" I always use bottled water with chalk paint. And if you dip only the tip of your brush into the paint, washing the brush is easy. There's no paint build up at the base of the bristles. Your brush will last longer and the bristles won't spread out. Great video, Kacha.....as always !
Thank you for the review ! Very, very helpful. I mix my paint with the hand held kitchen mixer, I stole from the kitchen. Got in a lot of trouble for my repurposing but it really works well for mixing the paint and cleans up easily. Plus, it has different speeds. I did buy another for the kitchen!
Thanks for all of the great advice. I've made many mistakes since I've been painting. I definitely have learned from them. Thanks for a great informative video !!
Your so real, humble.very giving !! Love that you include your mistakes and explain everything! We get to see it all..Really appreciate that you take the time and explain things.Your defintely one of the best out there!!! Love your style! Everything you touch turns to gold!!! Thank you for explaining everything you do and use in your videos!!!
That was such important advise. I saw yesterday in my local thrift store a piece that had been painted by an amateur , light green color. The paint looked very thick. So glad I did not buy it. So good to know about the mold and cigarette smell also!
Oh my goodness honey you just answered so many of my questions why certain pieces didn't work out! Thank you for sharing your very valuable knowledge with us!
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you, Kacha! I think I made almost all of these mistakes in my very first piece, which was another person’s paint job. It started there and spiraled down to MANY of these mistakes!!! I am learning the hard way!!! Will do better now, though!!
You are so sweet! I loved your ten important tips to have a successful painted piece. You are the only creative furniture painter that I watch! Thank you Katcha❣️🤗🌻💕🦋🌸
Thank you so much Kacha I really appreciate you taking the time and covering all the bases of furniture do's and don'ts, it was so informative. Ty Kacha
Great information and podcast- I'm listening to you all day today while repainting. I'm really struggling this week with a piece that is taking me days and days to paint, repaint, re-topcoating, etc. Snow storm, cold weather causing my paints and polys to misbehave. I mean really struggling emotionally and mentally with the process. So, thank you for all your content, I need it today! Also, your hair looks so pretty here!! oxox 🥰❤
Wonderful video! You are lovely and so generous with your advice for everyone. Have done some those mistakes myself over the years trying do some small items for myself. You are literally saving lots of people heartache, tears and a ton of work by sharing your knowledge like this. Many thanks, many times. xo
Very helpful thku for your advice...I believe you because you do fabulous work and an awesome finish so yes I believe you and accept any advice you give because it shows in your work so thku thku thku once again ❤
Hi Kasha You are a true furniture Artist. I have learned so much from you. My first piece looked like crap. It is quite a talent to make the piece look professional. Mine looked plain ugly. I've learned my choice of furniture makes a big difference too.
Thanks for the tips. I make furniture and refurbish items. I just started using chalk paints a few months ago. Its completely different than the paints and stains I've been using. It's learning how to paint all over again! I love your videos.
Yes! I would add don't allow your fur babies around painted furniture. They might rub against it or their wagging tail hit the piece. However it seems to work out fine for you And we enjoy your fur babies 😍
Omg you lived in Colorado..I was born and raised ther.. until 3 yrs ago this December we moved here to Montana..love it here .. Colorado got to busy and fast..
You Inspired Me To Get Into The Furniture Flipping Business. Painting For Me Helps With My PTSD And Anxiety I Have Watched Your Videos Over And Over Trying To Learn Blending And Different Technique's. I Made Over $1k Which I Never Thought Would Happen. I'm Going To Try Adding Water To The Area I'm Gonna Paint And See How That Goes Aswell As Using Less To The Brush. Thank You So Much For Inspiring People That They Can Do It!!!
Fantastic tutorial for beginners! I also learned by making the mistakes, but you my dear, have taught me plenty to avoid and saved me many since finding your videos!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, skills, and experience for us to be mindful before we start a furniture painting project. You have saved a many of a piece of furniture from being all messed up and a many of a person a lot of anguished hours trying to fix their mistakes! It is so kind of you to put together a video like this, your experience is so valuable!
Thank you for the tips. As an amateur doing only my furniture, i prime everything yes everything LOL I feel more confident when i paint a piece that has a coat of prime
Hello Kacha, I was an art teacher but now I work for a privet 2nd hand. Antique shop. I just try to save them all! Art timmerwork to rescue. But yes they bleed through ! Varnish is so thick, and the smell... Restoring is going better. Painting is ok. And the finishing is so hard! I'm a water products person, but in think pacient is not my talent.
Thanks for good information I am just getting interested in chalk painting and Moulds so thanks. Your my inspiration and give me courage to doing something special.

I have that bottle and yes it works great!
Awesome! Thank you
Good to know
yeeeeeees... same for the Febreze 1 bottle... 💚💚💚
Good stuff, listen to the end.

Perfect notes! ❤️
“2-tick!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you I like written lists🥰
Thank you so much for this video. You are so selfless in sharing your experience and wisdom. I continue to look forward to each and every video. 🙏🥰

Hi Kacha from New Zealand - I learnt lots from this video so thank you. I'm fairly new to refurbishing furniture and you've been so helpful. ❤
I have been a painter for 30 years and I'm learning new things from you everytime I watch your videos. You are so enjoyable to watch!!!
The best! Thank you! From the beginner who hasnt started yet.😊
Thank you!
Thank you! It’s been 5 years but it feels longer because I’ve painted everyday excessively for those 5 years!
Before I started painting with chalk paint I painted a dresser with indoor house paint. I want to re paint without stripping but now I think I'll strip it first to avoid wasting time. So many great tips, thankyou
But I bought a paint sprayer!
Hello bautiful Kacha! I haven't start painting with chalk paint yet, I am learning with your videos, this is great video with all your advice. Thank you, I love to see your videos, it gives peace and relaxation, I love it! ❤
Same. I'm gathering my necessities. Wondering if I should bite the bullet and purchase a surf prep sander.
Sooooo happy to hear your voice precious woman! Can't wait for that giggle!
I love them!❤️
I’m so sorry for the loss of your son, you will see him again one day ❤️
@@wtglb thank u so much! I believe that too. He was my angel. ❤️
Faith;
I’m sorry for the loss of your son. He sounds like he was extremely talented.
Hugs and prayers

HI KACHA, this your US grand mother, I LOVE YOU > I have wathed you from day one . KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!!
Thank you so much for this insightful video! Appreciate it!
Is it bad to say that I could listen to your voice ALL day. Thank you for the pointers! You are beautiful ❤️
My God!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to give us all those tips, blessings to you!!!
Thanks, Kacha, for sharing all your thoughts
Thank you for the voice of experience!
Love your work, your talent, your knowledge,
I use oil primer or shellac as a staple when covering old paint..or wood that hasn't been painted 😊
I’m painting as you speak and I grabbed the water spray bottle, what a difference it make. No brush strokes
Oh my gosh! You are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us.
Thank you Kaćha for this list. You answered several questions i've been wondering about.
Thank you for sharing
I like your ideas and brave spirit 😊to change a piece radically

Those mistakes are horrible to go through when your in the midsts of it….great learning curve and great story!
Thank You so much. I’m going to start my first piece and I needed these tips!
We live between Arizona and Maine! We know all about drying in five minutes in Arizona, and drying a whole day later, or longer, in Maine!
Thank you so much for sharing. Even if we've been painting for a while. It's really good to be reminded x
Great practical tips, thanks so much Kacha 🤗🤗🙏🙏
Thank you. I enjoy all your videos. You are a great teacher. You are very generous in sharing your knowledge. I am becoming more and more confident of being able to tackle a refinishing project. Thank you again.

Agreed, but you have to make the mistake for it to really sink in not to do it again!

You are so sincere and appreciate your opinions! This changed my painting life listening to these points.
But beautiful Kaćha, turn off the screen behind you when you record these videos. Too much distraction.

Agreed. Great video. I also fine sand between layers of varnish, water based. One gets a silky finish

Excellent suggestions and advice! You have a giving heart and a good work ethic, too! Watching your videos just make my day! ♥️🙏
That was such important advise. I saw yesterday in my local thrift store a piece that had been painted by an amateur , light green color. The paint looked very thick. So glad I did not buy it. So good to know about the mold and cigarette smell also!
This was so helpful. Thank you, I felt cared for by you throughout your discussion and I won't forget a thing you said.

Also, your hair looks so pretty here!! oxox 🥰❤

Great tips for a beginner like me. I applied 3 thin coats to a small decorative table that i purchased from Ikea. I loved how it turned out!
Thank you for all these great advises,
…My question is if you test for lead in old furniture
Great points Kacha! Clean, clean, clean, learn wood and wood stains. It’s the stain that bleeds through. Thank you!
So many really good tips and advice! I'm guilty of dipping my brush too much in paint, never again!
Yes!
I would add don't allow your fur babies around painted furniture. They might rub against it or their wagging tail hit the piece. However it seems to work out fine for you
And we enjoy your fur babies 😍
Great advice. Thank you for the best instructions I have heard. Well done.
Thank you for all the information, I have learned something new and helpful.
Incredibly helpful. Thank you.
Omg you lived in Colorado..I was born and raised ther.. until 3 yrs ago this December we moved here to Montana..love it here .. Colorado got to busy and fast..
Sooo helpful thanks so much Kacha 🤗🤗
All good advice, thanks. One thing that I found helpful is to have spare scraps of wood around to test paint colors, techniques and finishes.
