- Mitchell McAleer is a professional hang gliding pilot, who participated in the 2003 Red Bull Vertigo (an aerobatic paragliding and hang gliding competition). He put on one of the most incredible aerial demonstrations ever, executing one last full loop at water level in front of a truly astonished crowd. But on the second day, he performed his “killer loop” just a little bit too low and crashed into the water. Luckily, he came out unscathed.

back in the late 80's at Telluride Mitch was doing loops in front of launch, that evening in the park I asked him what glider he was flying and what mod's were made for it to be aerobatic capable and safe, and his response was it was the new WW-HP and no mods just factory original, that's when I decided to get a WW-HP for flying in the Owens Valley (flew it for about 12 years, had one near-tumble, but that was one heck of a solid glider and it flew through everything the Owens could throw at it, nowadays just about all gliders are that well made, but back then you did have to be concerned).

I have seen Mitch do a loop this low when landing at the Elsinore LZ, doing his pull up from below the height of The Oak Tree, all for the benefit of two or three of us pilots who had already landed. Funny note, I remember being packed in the back of a van with Mitch and some other pilots for the 10 minute ride up the windey Ortega Hwy to the E launch and he appeared to be getting car sick. I thought it was funny considering all the Acro he does but we agreed that can happen to any one when you are not in control of the vehicle or aircraft.

Motion and confinement has a different effect, especially for someone who’s body feels so free while gliding. Thanks for the story, much respect to you and those that do this.
have with more than a few confirmed pilots and athletes have little or no tolerance for being confined and not on the controls without getting motion sickness.
Mitch is the man. Watching that twist in person is just something he owns. Loaded with knowledge in free flight and doesn’t bullshit you. One of a kind dude.

Haha yes, it’s something they teach in French sports commentator’s universities it seems, because they all do the same irritating high pitched nervous thing where they frantically produce decibels without actually saying anything useful.
I prefer the English snooker tournament style of commentary, low and steady tranquil questioning of options. 😊

I laugh at the tinyness of your house. I am planning on an expedition to the upper floors of mine next year but it is complicated because you need to take oxygen with you because the air is so thin. Also it is very cold up there! At least we finished another tram station in the living stadium this year so if you want to go to the toilet hall you don't have to leave the living stadium five hours in advance.
I try this every day as soon as I get up !

Aaron Swepston, aka Looperman, invented and perfected the "Twisty," (which I will not insult with a French spelling) where you come OUT of a loop going back the way you went in. It's wild! MacAleer stole the idea. I've flown with them both. Aaron is a World Champion in Hang Gliding Aerobatics.

Saw Mitch years ago in Telluride, CO. He was amazing then, and that was probably 15 years ago.
Did you see Aaron Swepston there back then? He did the Telluride Aerobatics back then a few different times. Aaron invented the Twisty, I watched him practicing it in WA at local sites. Aaron then won a World Championship in HG Aerobatics.

@@Hovermaster Aaron invented the twisty. I remember talking to him about it many years ago, and watched as he practiced at a Washington State site, Dog Mountain. Took him a while, but he ironed it out. Mitch got it from Aaron, aka Looperman.

@@sigiloXXX: Actually, I have flown hang-gliders in the past, but now that I'm 70 years old I prefer flying my power paraglider trike & have cut down on sky diving to about twice a month. Even then I rarely free fall anymore, just do a hop & pop from 12,000 and float down. Those opening shocks are getting rough on these old bones.

indeed, was just thinking about better pilots, Guido Gehrman, Chris Mueller, Jeff Huey, dead or maimed either from pushing the margins like this, or no fault of their own other than being in the air, in that aircraft when shit happened. This was an aerobatic performance (by a very capable aero-pilot) when the pilot, in an effort to give the viewing spectators more of a thrill, misjudged his distance from the water.
The pilot had the ability to leave a greater margin for error between himself and the water but elected not to.

@@penrynbigbird Not an airspeed problem. He was trying to look cool by skimming the water in ground effect, just misjudged his height above water.

I lost a good friend to a glider accident in 1978. He had been stupid about flying for theee years and had flown into a mountain in Heavener, OK two years before. It takes a very level head to survive this sport. It’s great fun, the people. Are beyond good and giving but none are frivolous about risk.
Sad to hear about that. But it's not about the sport, it's about the risk management. You can have an accident in your car if you want. Mitch is a world class pilot, so he has more skills than any other guys. Best regards and be safe

Mitch on the front cover of Hang Gliding Magazine under a UP was the shit back in the 80s. Never met him despite flying So. Cali for ten years but I know he's a real mensch and a badass.
We don't call him Mad Mitch for nothing, still the only guy I know who can design a glider build it himself and fly it better than anyone.

It's conservation of energy. Although it is a bit harder on a hang glider because they have so much drag compared to regular aircraft.

"The control bar and front wires broke and instead of the nose plate hitting the back of the pilot's head, it nails him mid back" ... did you watch the video you uploaded? the control bar stays in place and the pilot simply gets launched forwards from the impact.
This information comes from Mtch McAleer himself. I think he knows what he says.
@@GuillaumeBroust Look at the video. It's right in front of you. I'm not saying that the nose plate didn't hit him in the back. I'm saying that the control bar didn't break.. he was simply catapulted froward when the thing hit the water.
He can say whatever he likes, but I'm going to go with the video showing what happened being more factual than someone saying what they think happened.

I don't know why he feels the need to make things up. It defies physics to say that the control bar broke and went forward with him, when it is the first thing to make contact with the water.
If it did actually break, it would have folded backwards, not forwards.

Guillaume Broust, I don't think you narration in the description holds up. At 2:01, which I presume is the first day, he is much, much lower and he successfully completes the loop. Therefore stating that the crash loop was do to being performed to low, is incorrect; something else was amiss.

actually had the absurd notion to drag my hand in the water at way over 100mph. doh, the reserve container hit the water and the rest is history.

As a former skydiver I know at skydiving the main cause of deadly accidents are landing errors due to daring maneuvers near the ground... 🤷🏿♂️

Nick, you have the right idea. Darker ground absorbs more heat than lighter surfaces. Often, in the Seattle area, a black parking lot will create a healthy thermal flow that ends in a nice, puffy cloud if conditions are right. Happens a lot in the spring.
Rocky mountain surfaces heat up in the sun, too, more if they are dsrker. Same goes for darker patches of land, like plowed farmland.
Also, terrain plays a big role. Imagine a mountain heating up in the morning sun as it rises toward its summer noon peak.
Now imagine a small model of the mountain, flipped upside down, sprayed with water from a spray bottle. The water generally slides along and drips off the peaks.
Thermals tend to slide up the mountain just like the water runs "up" the angled slopes of the mountain, until it finds a peak or change in slope where it breaks free and falls away.
Now, visualise that model flipped right-side up, and imagine the water continuing to slide up the slopes like it did when inverted. That is what thermals tend to do, as they are generated on sloped surfaces. They tend to slip along the inclined surface until they reach a peak or other change in contour where they will break free and rise vertically.
Then, any prevailing wind will cause thermals leaving the mountain to lean as they climb into the sky, pushed downwind with the moving air mass. You can see it as clouds tend to lean and drift. You can sometimes visualize the angle of the thermal that rose to make the cloud, following It down to whatever ground mass created it. It is a wonderful concept to grasp as you fly around, trying to read the land and find a thermal to climb in.
Another thing to think about on a hillside, is that thermals sliding up a mountain tend to cycle through as they carry the heated air up from where they started down lower. When a thermal breaks loose and slides up the hill, cooler, heavier air is drawn in where the thermal began, and the breeze flowing up the hill stops when that heated "bubble" has flushed past an observer on the mountain. That cooler air down below takes a little time to heat up from the warm ground, and when heated, it soon becomes expanded enough to slide up the mountain and pull in another rush of cooler air behind it, displacing it, and the thermal cycle begins all over again. The thermal cycle time varies with the terrain and conditions, but is fairly regular. It can be every minute or so to several minutes from thermal to thermal at a mountain launch site. You'll see pilots often checking thermal cycle strength and times as they wait on launch, to get a feel for when to launch.
Pilots often like launching as the thermal flow builds, so they get well off the hill before it has passed by them, and get into the majority of it, instead of waiting roo long, taking off as the thermal is almost done. If they wait too long in the cycle, the may find the thermal has passed as they get away from the hill, and it dumps them out the back of it.
Understand that the thermal will also be shedding warm air off its "back" as it slides up the mountain slope, which may give the lucky glider pilot additional lift after they launch and get out away from the hill. Timing matters!
And that is all I know about anything...

It’s such a dangerous sport, it breaks my heart when people end up getting hurt or killed just living life
you can hurt yourself in almost every outdoor sports (mountaineering, skiing, paragliding, climbing...) it's just the question of how you practice the sport
life is terminal, no one gets out alive. Seems like the only choice we have is how much to live life.
Life is dangerous! Hang Gliding is the only aviation sport that the FAA allows to self regulate because of the safety record. Now Hang Gliding aerobatics are a bit riskier and dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.
No if approached with the right attitude is is quite safe. I don't get any adrenaline from it any more.

I'm confused now. Inexperienced audience... Inexperienced in what? Hanggliding? Crashing into water? Watching TH-cam videos? Watching in general? Breathing? Or maybe inexperienced in totally unrelated areas? Kissing? Dating? Raising children? Driving a car? Opening a wine bottle the right way?
You know, just don't take chances. I strongly advise that NOBODY ever watches this video. Or any other video.
You know what? Order a padded suit, a helmet, a gas mask, put it all on, close your eyes, sit in a soft chair in a room with padded walls and floor, and just never move again.
