  • Indian novelist, short story writer, poet and editor Anjum Hasan on ‘being a scribbler and a commentator on society’, on stressing the relevance of understanding and reading history, for it gives a perspective, and is empowering. As she speaks about her latest book, History’s Angels and the journey of its mild mannered history teacher, Aliph. Reviews underline her novel as an education of the heart (The Wire). Identities, the middle class society of today and exploring the alienation of being an Indian fascinates her. She insists for writers, especially fiction novelists, to have a rozi-roti to fuel their writing passion, and cannot emphasize more on the importance of reading fiction - “read and you’ll know what your soul is made up of”. Her novel Neti, Neti was longlisted for 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize and shortlisted for the The Hindu Best Fiction Award in 2010. In conversation with Jaskiran Kapoor
