  • The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 47,000 acres of southern New Jersey coastal habitats which is actively managed for migratory birds. The refuge’s location in one of the Atlantic Flyway’s most active flight paths makes it an important link in seasonal bird migration. Its value for the protection of water birds and their habitat continues to increase as people develop the New Jersey shore for our own use.
Forsythe is one of more than 555 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Wildlife Refuge System is a network of lands and waters managed specifically for the protection of wildlife and wildlife habitat and represents the most comprehensive wildlife resource management program in the world. Units of the system stretch across the United States from northern Alaska to the Florida Keys, and include small islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific. The character of the refuges is as diverse as the nation itself.

I am 70 now, and living on my VA PTSD awarded pension at the Maine/Canadian border.
From the age of 34 to 49, I would take the NJ transit bus to Atlantic City, and changing out to the NJ Transit bus that headed past the refuge, on perhaps 50 visits or more.
I would get off the bus on Route 9 and walk in to the refuge and walk the whole 8 miles around the refuge. It was a great relief and so much nature and scenery and quiet, with Atlantic City in the distance.
Often I would climb the 2 story observation tower. Most people drove around, but I walked, as I had no car.
I had a rabbit in my apartment in Stratford, NJ, and on a few occasions, I carried it on the bus in a little cat carrier, out to the observation tower, and she would hop about when I released her on the fenced-in two story tower, where I would snooze in the sun, cooled by the 20 mph breeze, as I snoozed or watched the sea birds devour the Horseshoe crabs that came to shore to lay their eggs.
I did this during all 4 seasons of the year.
If you want an interesting experience, leave your auto at the welcome center, use the rest room, but instead of driving the 8 miles circle road around the perimeter, walk it, (only on the road where you are allowed), and get the full experience. It's quite a trip. Roger J Stavitz

My grandmother started taking me there when I was about 6 or 7, those trips are etched in my mind.
