    I just bought a bunch of better bike recording equipment for the future. The next few videos will still be with this setup, but it'll get better. I'm getting more serious about it now. Rear shock was super messed up during this trip and it also leaked most its oil, so I was basically riding a spring and nothing else. I've bought a replacement, but also sent this one in for repair (assuming it's affordable to do so). Doesn't hurt to have a backup, at this point. Sorry for the rattle.

      @@TrailFeatures Definitely the biggest downside to doing more of these. Sometimes you just want to ride, but as long as I don't push as hard as I am for GN and keep it a side project, it'll be OK.

      Cant wait to see videos with the new recording equipment! What did you go with? Many mtb video makers still use hero 4's with chest mounts and/or a gimbal plus custom mic setups since they appearently provide better audio than the hero 5 and newer gopro cameras.

    • @TheRocketSmith

      I'm super interested in your choices for bike recording equipment. The trend now seems to be a gopro 7 and a chin mount on a full face. Any chance for a review?

    You could try keeping 'testing limitations' to the wrap-up. Anyone who's watching case reviews to help with decisions is going to watch a lot longer than your average troll.

    • @KillaBitz
      @KillaBitz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That probably is the best solution. Could go the other way though with ppl now pissed because they have "wasted" time on a "flawed" review and now there is nothing left to do but chat shit.
      I think you're always going to get the odd pleb (like me) that feels the need to voice his opinion but at this stage your methodology is way above others in the industry and I actually can't see any issues with a standardised test set up.
      It makes compassion easy.

    Just discovered this, but it was your review of the Dynamic XL that got me to purchase it. GN remains one of the most transparent tech reviewers on YT. Having watched the channel for at least three years, I am confident that I am always getting thoroughly researched and thoughtful content, when I Gamers Nexus or read your articles. I have the highest respect for Gamers Nexus' dedication to reviews and analysis that is impartial and grounded in good science. As with any published science, you will be subject to peer review. As you noted, during your rant, you respect and appreciate the opportunities you have to learn from your peers, so that you can gain knowledge and improve your testing methodology. Unfortunately, America is fostering a culture of distrust in science, and American society seems to actively encourage science illiteracy. Uneducated, negative comments are and unfortunate side effect of this phenomenon. These comments are too often made in an authoritarian voice that attracts a certain demographic to fall prey to the logical fallacy of appealing to authority and upvoting the negative, but uneducated, comments.
    Steve, I know that it is emotionally draining to read and fight against the negative, and purposefully damaging (i.e.: trolling) comments; however, you are dedicated to doing great science, in a climate of science adversity. Keep true to yourself and the ideals you have set for GN, and keep educating us with fantastic content! I hold you in high esteem, as a fellow science educator.
    By the way, I love the bike trails. I can't stop botanizing, as you ride.

    @jpitt916 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah the internet brings out the trolls, but I think the majority of us appreciate the pretty extreme lengths you go to present thorough testing results. For the O11D/Air, I was just surprised at how well the O11D did for being a water cooling aimed case, and how not well the Air did. Aside from those two specific examples, I find all of your content extremely well done.

    Thanks for the roller-coaster ride. I am terrified of them so my heart skipped a beat or two during your ride down the hill. How you are able to talk at the same time just blows my mind.
    There will always be "know it all's" who like to argue and complain about everything and nothing. And the more subs you have, the more of those it will be as well. However, most of the comments I see is the ones who are positive, or just funny. Don't take the "know it all's " comments to serious, and don't feel like you are punching down if what they say is outright wrong. It's important to point out wrong information as well.
    Concentrate on the positive comments, and the constructive criticisms (if there are any). There is no need to linger on the negative when there is so much positivity in your comment section. Also remember to take a time out and relax from time to time.
    Again thank you for all your hard work.

    Yeah I feel that... I studied performance impact of memory on csgo by playing deathmatch for long enough to variance even out as I don't agree that benchmark maps or demos are representative of actual gameplay.
    I laid it in table that the method has statistical variance but the performance difference was large enough to offset that (~20%) but my reddit post was shot down immediately.
    But I appreciate transparency in your videos and I'm certain I'm not alone with that. We just don't rage as much in the comments I suppose.

    Hey I enjoyed the trip downhill thanks.. and i'm very sympathetic about the your comments' comments :-) - (see that's where apostophes go). The World takes all sorts and those that can listen to everyone else and still form valid, well balanced, informed opinions, and can see through the woods for the trees, even doing 50mph on a deserted ski slope, without skis, is a good person in my book. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger and that must include all comers. Even when someone is talking shit at you, you can still rise from it and be better informed afterwards. Keep up the good work... it is good work. Rattle of a duff rear shock is quite bearable compared with some noises.

However, there is no point in my life that I could make that kind of uphill ride. Even when I was skinny, even the slightest incline was normally too hard for me and I had to walk the bike up. Last time I tried to ride I seriously jacked up my wrist. THEN I learned you're supposed to get your bike fitted. Mine is a Gary Fisher freeride, probably a 2005, hard tail...but the distance from the seat post to the handlbars is just too far so I end up with too much weight forward. Everything else at Trek was too short, oddly enough. I'll have to replace mine at some point...and probably full suspension.

    To sum up: Facts are triggering snowflakes who can't form rational thought. I (and I'm sure many others) appreciate how you critique things instead of letting things slide. I like attention to detail and I don't like reviewers ignoring downsides to a product. I think many people these days prefer to live in a false reality where nothing is ever negative instead of confronting the facts. They want to pretend like everything is amazing. I'd rather have all the information available than not; that's why I'm watching the video. I think people who watch your videos watch for the same reason and we all support the way you create content. The case reviews are probably the main thing that attracted me to begin with. Nobody does case reviews like GamersNexus. I like the presentation consistency too (much like Redline Reviews for vehicles). Finally, extra credit for the laughs (like the references to the h500 -- no not THAT one, or THAT one, the one that fell apart when you tried to pick it up!) Keep up the great work, please :).
    PS - I also like how you remain out of political topics and stick to technology, even when discussing things where political discussion is able to be inserted. You don't insert little snarky remarks or make jokes about your personal opinion on a topic. I love discussing politics but it's a bit irritating when tech channels start bringing that in (I'm looking at you LTT).

    Worst thing i find in the comments are people not getting the in-joke of the videos naming and comment before even watching it. Then don't delete that bs or even rephrase ;) Also those who can't take that someone is criticising their "idol of the week"... Just keep up the great work! Some people are just idiots ;)

    We should tar and feather then run out of town on a rail the H8ers that shitpost. I watch your videos along with Paul, Kyle, Jay, Aussie Steve etc and usually they all are very close but each sometimes presents a little different look. That way I get all angles and can make up my own mind about a product or game etc. Thanks for the videos Steve, they are always enjoyable.

    That rear shock must be completely blown up if it's making that much noise. Kinda curious how that happened. Also, what kind of bike do you ride? Looks like some sweet trail.

    • @gnsteve8846
      @gnsteve8846  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Canfield Jedi! It was pretty blown up. The body was twisting about its axis, which it's not supposed to do (according to Cane Creek), and most the oil leaked out during the ride. I've got a DHX2 coming in to replace it, but also sent this out to Cane Creek to try and recover.

    • @jamesbilger
      @jamesbilger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sweet frame. Gotta say, I love Cane Creek's stuff when it works but I've been seeing a lot of people with Cane Creek stuff breaking lately. But that may just be because no one here bothers to overhaul their stuff until it's already broken. Never seen one of their shocks break hard enough that it could twist on it's axis though. That's a heck of a failure mode.

    Badge of pride that sound of a rear shock blown out, well done. Thinking new shock or rebuild? Nice ride. One thing I find with life in general is everyone is at a different point in every way including emotional, educational and physically, the mind changes as we age and it's hard to see people at different ages in their progression and for me I find it reminds me of either parts of me I don't like, use to be or work hard not to be. The weed helps, I really appreciate your work and your reviews and I wish I was at your level to give you valuable feedback but you have a skill and I appreciate you sharing it.

    It reminds me of reading product reviews online. There may be a few dumb ones that totally trash it, but they're so ignorant and poorly written that normal people don't buy into their shitty opinion. So I'd like to think that most people read those stupid YT comments and walk away knowing they're just a few rando idiots. Still, it sucks you all have to even deal with it. Us normal people (not to be confused with normies) appreciate your honesty and transparency though.

    Comments should have timestamps of how much of the video was watched, would also make it a lot easier for people to show highlights
    Be like "1 second in - Steve crashed 5 times in this video! Does he still have training wheels?"
    I would know, all the crashes were in the 1 second I watched XD

    Something about anything is someone's sacred cow somewhere. This is not cause for suspending the slaughter.
    I guess as an afterthought it's also worth mentioning that people don't know how to swallow their pride and delete their comment when they are wrong or something later in the video upends their walltext's premise. Human nature.

  • @Oldsah

    Hey Steve! FYI your methodology is great, not the best, but consodering the sheer amount of variety of things you're reviewing, makes it more than good enough.
    Thank you!
    But I'd still like to request 1 thing. For future acoustic testing, please please either include frequency graphs or sone measurements.
    It's not perfect, but helps making a more broad view on the suspect.
    Espescially with fans (mostly gpu) and pumps, it helps identify slight differences in build quality.
    Obviously, if it was horrible, you'd immediately notice and tell us, but in some cases you'd have like a laing ddc by say ek vs alphacool and in general they have similar dbA values, but one has noticeably more humming, sone and frequency do make it visually easier to identify.
    Cheers!

    • @gnsteve8846
      @gnsteve8846  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No methodology is "the best." That's the point of this video. There is always a bigger fish. We're interested in frequency spectrum, but not really sure the best way to go about it. If you have suggestions on equipment and links to where we can read more about interpreting the data, that'd help a lot. The biggest limiter is likely going to be the room, but with a noise floor of 26dB, we might be in "good enough" territory.

      @@gnsteve8846 I really only have some high-level knowledge that I obtained from a school assignment I had a while back. I don't feel comfortable recommending equipment(as in brands/models) , as my information might be outdated or even plainly wrong.
      I remember you, at some point, were visiting a graphics card manufacturer, that had an in-house anechoic chamber. Perhaps they can share some information. There are set standards in most industries and I did not meddle with those.
      Quick heads up on what one would usually need.
      - 2-4 identical microphones or one of those handy multidirectional (I can't remmeber the correct term) microphone setups.
      - An oscilliscope (both software and dedicated hardware are reliable nowadays.
      (You already have a setup to measure dbA so in theory you should be able to also measure frequencies.)
      A sound level meter used to measure frequencies
      - A decent environent. It does not need to be soundproof, it just needs to isolate the most common frequencies.
      -A few days worth of setting it up.
      Here is a downloadable in depth article I used in my assignment. It explains various equipment types.
      www.researchgate.net/post/Which_instrument_can_be_used_for_measuring_frequency_in_Hertz
      Here are a few interesting explanations of sound itself.
      DIY anechoic chamber (courtesy of Tech Ingredients). It is large and bulky, for your use case a much smaller and simpler setup will be more than enough.

      Some basic information regarding how sound travels.
      The first few minutes explain it using examples. That helps getting a clear understanding of the physics regarding sound.

      More information regarding how sound travels, mentioned in the video above. Read just the "How Sound travels" part.

      I hate to do this, but some terminologies are outright confusing and complicated. In that case I actually recommend looking very specific things up on Wikipedia.
      It isn't scientific or accurate, but it is helpful to get into it. If you need a quick summary of a "category" Wikipedia can be helpful. Mainly the "definition" and "physics" sections are helpful. Everything else isn't really any easier to understand than the actual scientific article.
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound
      This is kind of hard to understand, I personally can't follow everything in the article. There are certain bits and pieces that are crucial, so I'll link it.
