I'm glad that they changed tack on this show as the seasons progressed. I hate that we have 21 artists and we don't even get a look at half the paintings. Very frustrating, I feel like cattle being shoved along in the direction the judges want me to go. I was really surprised and disappointed by their choice this episode. I feel it was based on his self portrait rather than the work he did during the competition. I LOVED the vibrant colored 3/4 portrait, but we didn't even get to see it finished. But I still enjoy the show and am overjoyed to have the opportunity to watch these older episodes.
Agree totally. As one who is learning this craft, I would have liked more time with all the painters as they moved through the creative process and with their completed works rather than the constant comments and focus upon the judges. Also, not signing a work is dreadful advice in this day and time.
@@southernlady5085 The judges were not saying they shouldn't sign their work, just not to sign it on the front of the painting. The common practice of contemporary painters is to put all the information, title, medium, size, date and name on the back, because sticking a signature on the front is not only distracting to the actual work, but recalls the older convention of the old masters, which feels cheesy to do these days. The general idea is, if it doesn't help the actual painting in anyway, is shouldn't be on the front.
I'm a watercolor painter. I have NEVER encountered anyone with the opinion that you should not sign your artwork. On the contrary, signing it is a symbolic ritual indicating completion as much as informing the viewers of the identity of the artist.
THANK YOU! I've never heard of such a strange opinion in the art world. She's doing a terrible disservice to her "students." I hope they're at least signing the backside of their works.
There is a show judging tattoo artwork. It was clear from the beginning that the judges weren’t picking what the audience found to be the best. Granted, this is all subjective, but they started to allow regular people in the audience to vote as well. Changed the whole dynamics of the judging for the BETTER.
I have the impression that the final three were chosen randomly. How could they not choose any work depicting this lady lying down? There were definitely better paintings there.
Also the pressure one judge placed on the winner as he was painting “to have drips” was inappropriate. I felt the drips were out of place on the winning portrait. I felt he did it solely to please the judge as it didn’t serve a real purpose in his painting. It didn’t add anything to the character of the portrait he painted.
This show makes me cry 🥲 I wish they showed it from a less biased point of view so the audience could connect with any of the artists, not just the judges favorites
it’s a shame because i used to have the most respect for /him/ among the judges. i tended to agree with him more often. i lost so much respect for him. this whole episode is so disappointing. at least the art created is beautiful
I can't believe that expert hates signatures on paintings and actively discourages people from doing them. AND isn't she the one who deals???? The blond girl that says at 4.40 something, "I would recommend my artists not to sign their painting", is probably the dumbest advice I have ever heard. Yes I agree, when a signature is bad, it can ruin a painting, then advice your artist to practice their signature.
It's like she's from the fashion world , rolling her eyes and saying It's just not done. Nobody needs to practice their signature (!)... just don't listen to judges like her who dwell on superficial things.
She’s the same individual who had a grown man & honored guest remove his shirt. I wonder how he felt about it. Lol maybe it’s just me, I felt bad for him. Am I alone on this?
Like so many others? It is literally the Essence of a portrait...resemblance and likeness. It is a joke to every other painter here who actually got their subject right. It did not remotely look like the man he was painting. It should never have won. But the judges also seem to struggle with remembering what the competition is about. I feel for those other artists here...loosing to someone who painted someone in his head but certainly no one who was in the room.
Completely agree. They seem to gloss over the really skilled paintings that are often the most intriguing and simultaneously creative and choose one or the other..
It seems the two lady judges have well respected "business" positions in the art world, however they are not artists. Thus it just comes down to their personal opinion which I wasn't really impressed with. Their choices in previous landscape competitions were similarly disappointing. And that bit about a signature was quit annoying.
The most interesting paintings (to me) weren't even in the final 3. The winning face is a round ball while the sitter's face is much slimmer. The judges commented on the eyes. Eyes alone do not a portrait make.
To recap, one judge is an artist, himself, and appreciates a particular style, one judge makes her living describing art and has a handle on what happens to be selling well and the third judge has seen too much of a particular style, tainting her eyes, so that "refreshing" to her is simply something she does not see on a regular basis; perhaps not the best selection of a panel.
Well, as someone who's been in the art world for a few decades, I can see where they're coming from. They have to select art, not just based personal subjective likes (opinions we all have), but also on what feels like a development in painting. Painting is a discourse, and there has a lot that has been done in painting over the centuries, so what's considered engaging in contemporary times are works that some how attempt to push beyond the established conventions. What seems like a technical masterpiece, may be relatively dull and irrelevant within the discourse of painting, because they could be a dime a dozen. What the judges are trying to do is find works that go beyond the mere established technique, convention etc. and find something that possibly offers something new to painting.
I was scrolling down to find someone with this response. The "not signing" a piece of art idea is very narrow minded. I ALWAYS told my students to sign their work and date it (year), as I myself do. It doesn't have to be ostentatious but will be very useful at some point in the future. How many unsigned "masterpieces" have to go through an extensive and exhausting process just to possibly identify the creator and then estimate at which point in the artist's career it was produced? (I even forget when I painted many of my own pieces! - lol)There is an entire show just based on this detective work called "Fake or Fortune". Always sign your work and date it!
uh... that was the worst painting in my opinion, the proportions are extremely bad. they chose it because its "unique"? oh please, the only thing unique about that painting is the fact no part of his face looks like the model
I do love what they do in later seasons! I don't miss that female judge in the blue dress, how creepy is that to ask the athlete to take his top off because he has the 'ideal' body shape, as an artist myself if that was the case why not ask all of them to take their tops off (joking of course) but you can learn a lot from all body shapes and this isn't a life drawing class
When he came out, he was barefoot. I think that him posing shirtless was worked out ahead of time, but the judge instructed him to take off his shirt for a bit of added drama. That's just my interpretation.
I knew he would win, i can feel so much power and depth through his portrait. It is like a multilayered rose unfolded as it is blossoming, the eyes are right in the center, radiating emotions from them. What an amazing piece of art! The other paintings are also well-done, but they are lack of power to make you contemplate.
