Dear Deglingo, As a Malaysian myself, I think the point of 'hard to mix with the Malaysians" can be misleading. We do talk about sports, politics, entertainment, and go for afterwork. You just need to find the right crowd. Most of expatriates 'reste entre eux', and if you really wanna see the locals for afterworks, the famous spot would be at Bangsar. Rarely people go hangout in the KL centre itself, as it was design for tourist. But its true that they are certain places that only Malaysian knows to avoid it become too touristic, if you are nice we might bring you to these places and not just bring you to the normal cliché like Cameron Highlands/Perhentian/Penang. :P Another point is language, true that most of Malaysians speaks English but some still dont speak fluently/lack of vocabulary. Like France, we learn English at school. Contrarily in France, I will NEED to speak french to blend with the french and certainly not english. I can speak in English, but french wont reacts the same or maybe they dont even understand... The same case in Malaysia, you can still speak English, but you wont get the same vibes/understanding when you speak the local language.
I really get your point and appreciate it a lot ! my main frustration as very open minded person was to not be able in 5 years to link strongly with local. I have few friends sure, but not with the deep intense friendship that i could have in France. definitely, I need to find the right mate , just unfortunate i guess ! thank you for your kind and constructive comment ;)

Even until now (7 years in France), I still find quite difficult to blend in, as we don't share the same culture/childhood memories or songs. So, when the French refers to Piroutte I was just alone there not knowing what it is. haha. Since then, I learn more and more, I start listening to the old french song to the latest. From Yves Montand, Jacques Brel, Thomas Dutronc even PNL or Maitre Gims. MDR. Appreciate that you do like exploring our country, and if you guys need someone to show around (more than the cliché stuff bien sûr) , I'll be glad to do it. Bon dimanche à vous trois.

Example, the latest case about ICERD, people just commenting what they see from the 'outside', while the problem is much more complicated than that. n Malaysia's case, way way way back then when British was on our soil, they brought Chinese and Indians to work here and exploit our natural ressources (and of course when they got all they ever wanted, they just left). Once in 'Tanah Melayu' (Malaysia name before independence), Brits discriminate all races, especially the Malays. Malays only been given job in the kampung area, Indians in rubber tree area, and Chinese holds the business. Racial discrimination happened during their colonization, that is why after the independence from British, our Prime Minister propose to the Chinese and Indians, "You can stay, but in order to re-équilibré racial discrimination for Malays in our own land, you must accept this criteria". Most of Chinese and Indians chose to stay in Tanah Melayu, thus accepting 'Malay special rights'. However, I do personally believe after 60 years of independence, we can leave all this racial issues behind us.

When I say Tanah Melayu, I dont mean that Malay 'own' the land. Tanah Melayu is the ACTUAL name before Sabah and Sarawak join to from Malaysia. It was not call Tanah Orang Asli.

Moi aussi cela m’énerve aussi cet abus de langage immigrés / expatriés ou des Occidentaux partent à l’étranger et se disent expatriés alors que ce sont des immigrés. J’ai par exemple un ami Maroccain en France qui est expatrié pas immigré et mes parents ont toujours été expatriés jamais immigrés.

bon j'ai fait un com mais disparu avant de le valider j'ai été juste étonné que des français s'expatrie la bas, mais on en apprend pas mal, je connais pas trop ce pays mais ça ressemble bien aux autres du coin, genre le marché tres ressemblant a celui des philippines mais plus axé musulman, normal. mais du monde sur le marché, de la street food, meme structure, l'asie quoi
As a Malaysian. Just don't wish to have too many tourists to visit my country which could raise the economy standard. As for the islands..Too many will just destroy the ecosystem like phi phi island

Few things here are not correct. Maybe u haven't been really exploring well enough to know Malaysia. Or maybe u didn't meet the right people that u commented bad the locals. Good desserts from mousse to maccaron are found easily.
