- Fascinating footage of a Loggerhead Shrike capture from our team down in Chihuahua, Mexico...
This Loggerhead Shrike was trapped on the wintering grounds in Chihuahua as part of an investigation on survival and movement patterns of Grasshopper and Baird’s Sparrows. Loggerhead Shrikes are a primary predator of these sparrows, which we are monitoring with radio telemetry.
In the future, we hope to attach transmitters to shrikes to get a better idea of how predator movements affect sparrows. This shrike was trapped using a specially designed shrike trap. The house sparrow, which was used as bait, was protected in a cage within the shrike trap.

Shrikes are so cool. Theyr behaviour is fascinating.
As if it's calling from your hand... As someone who traps shrike in Ontario, I must say: your southern shrikes seem pretty chill.
That loggerhead shrike is so cute
