A great presentation Seth, right up to your usual standard; stating many salient facts about the Elephant that is in the room, that people chose to ignore, either from ignorance or simply that they do not fit into their unsupported presupposition's. When people believe something without having knowledge or evidence they will simply ignore any truth or facts that impinge upon their unfounded beliefs.

I could have gone to this; I wish I had known. I gotta keep better track of these events so next time I make it when they are in my neck of the woods.

I used to be like a liberal christian, I fell in love with the idea of a perfectly loving all accepting god but it simply wasn't biblical.

I love that the second time the audio goes weird (20:50) it's just on the phrase "agent of God's miraculous power". Almost as if it was meant to be... :P

As one of my Ex's° once hypocriticaly said,"I'd rather you kill me with the truth that let me live happily with a lie. "
° "Was it love? Or was it the idea of being in love? Or the hand of fate which seemed to fit just like a glove?"

I may be an atheist, but I took something from the bible seriously, and don't understand why people who believe in god for some reason ignore it. The Greeks also believed in it, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I would add a corollary, however, make sure they have the same tastes as you.

I know what you mean, and of course, this is a worthy sentiment. Notable in the 'Parable of the Samaritan' (In which the non-jewish Samaritan is being compared to the Jews, who 'pass on the other side'. Doubtless, though, the 'Golden Rule' much predates the New Testament; such as in the Analects of Confucius. A lot of the biblical writings just plagiarize a lot of other existing material too.

I was just investigating Buddhism, it agrees with a lot of my feelings, inflicting pain on others inflicts pain on you. Being confused and lost causes pain as well.
So many Christians exhibit this it's sad, the screaming you have to believe my god!!! Why is their belief so weak that they feel you have to verify their belief by pretending to believe it or they'll just die?
This suggests they're hanging on by their fingernails to their belief and if you lie to them, it'll make them feel so much better. Like telling someone who's going to die of cancer that "oh, yes, you're going to be fine".

Marilyn Newman The "Do unto others" thing is called the Golden Rule. It's secular, it's not something the Bible invented, and in fact it predates all known or modern religions because the concept of "Do unto others" is an understanding normal people with the capacity for empathy understand without words being associated to it.

Marilyn Newman I don't believe in the Bible in general, but if you search long enough, you will find some great words of wisdom. THOSE are the passages that all the Fundamentalist Christians should focus on. These words of wisdom will find agreement, even in the Atheist community (tell if I'm wrong on that). If the FC focuses on those passages, maybe the Religious Community and the Atheist Community would find some common ground. We can only hope.

Your corollary is quite insightful, because you have recognised the great flaw in the golden rule.
Don't do to others as you would have them do to you, because they might not like it (Taken from A C Grayling, who in turn was quoting someone else I forget now).
A better rule would be to "Treat others as they want to be treated".

Good talk, but there's some really screwed up bits with the audio that makes it intolerable to listen to on at least 2 occasions.

Yeah, the echo was crazy. I'm surprised Seth didn't stop speaking when it started. There's sound-weapons out there with the exact same thing being used (nearly-immediate echo of your exact dialogue) that has been shown to make people stop talking. It does something weird to the brain. Happens to me all the time when I'm on the phone and I can hear myself.

I did sound for the "chapels" at my local Christian school for a number of years. My mind picks out much smaller "transgressions" than this all the time :P

Okay, good talk, although dated, using Hitch's research, which is an easy target for his skeptical audience. A more bolder, far more critical talk would have addressed the issues of identity politics, in particular feminism, in the skeptical community. Taking to task, for example, Carrier's polarizing remark, "you're either for feminism or you're against us". Certainly showing "red pill/blue pill" tangentially alludes to MRAs.

If there is a loving and caring god then let me tell you, he hates religion and he is just cruel. I can only handle seeing and going through so much suffering. God must love it. And I only capitalized god because it's at the beginning of the sentence. Otherwise, no.

I think Seth is a great guy, but his speeches are like clickbait articles. High on sensation, high on making top lists, low on content. He never gets to the core of the topic, but just circles around it. Annoying.

Is God so weak that his love can't penetrate simple human compassion? And just what does that love look like anyway? That's not charity, that's a scam.

Apart from the words he sounds exactly like the preachers he now despises. Funny that! They are all actors looking for a role. It would be nice if Seth focused on an issue of the nature of consciousness instead of the religion v atheist sideshow.
