I just ran an ultra marathon, a 24 hour endurance run in Lillington, NC. I had never run anything over a 5K official race before that. I ran for 13 hours and 60 miles. I only stopped because I got really cold at night and I didn't bring the appropriate attire. I'll be 51 in about a month also. I run it again next year and get a 100 miles in, no problem.
I went from running half marathons right into running a 50k. This was NOT a good idea. I was not prepared but I did finish. This year I'm doing it right. Great video.
My brother had only ever ran 20 miles continuously. Two days ago he finished the jfk 50 miler in 12:29. He said his body gave up at mile 24. His mind never did tho! Proud brother here lol
I jumped from challenging trail halfs right into trail 50ks. It went OK! Never had interest in road marathons and have never done one, but now have a handful of 100 milers under my belt.
I'm 255lbs and ran my first ultra a month ago. its really not that crazy dude. 5hrs 34 mins. Just go with the mentality that its just going to be a day of running and relax
@@terminator3728 Im sorry I never responded to this. My knees are fine but it took a few breaks for them to recover from 70 mile weeks and so on. At your weight, an ultra shouldn't be all the time. take a month or so after depending on your fitness level before trying again. it took me a week before I could run again but ive been training my entire life.
I'm off to the shops in a minute. It's just over 50 yards. I've been watching about 2 videos on running a week with a video on ultramarathons on the weekends. I've only ever taken the car til now but I feel pretty good about this one
I run about 60 miles a week. I've never ran a marathon though. A few 10 mile trail runs and a half marathon but should I increase mileage? My LR's are about 10 miles but I'm a little worried about the wear on my body over those extra 17 or 18 miles of undiscovered territory. Thanks!
I have never run 60 miles a week but I have run 25 marathons more than half of them on trails and mountains - look up an online marathon training schedule and follow it
amblincork Thanks for the reply. I have hardware in my right leg from a badly fractured fibula. that makes it difficult to push past 10 miles at a time. I can easily push through a marathon but possible stress fractures scare me a little bit and I'm military so suffering an injury could hinder me from service.
Best talk with your doctor or physio so - your legs must be pretty good to do 60 miles a week - I am 61 and couldnt do that mileage a week but at same time can do marathons in the alps - good luck with it !
Great video, glad I found it. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your material. Is your podcast available on any android platforms other than iTunes (don't want to take my work phone running)
Love your video Rock Creek Runner, thanks! I have a question about trail running cadence. I run trails and was wondering about how many steps per minute I should be running. There is the factor of hills, roots, rocks and other various obstacles that I have to be very careful to navigate through and this slows my cadence down. Do I have to run the average of 180, plus or minus a few steps? I read various articles concerning running cadence and that the higher the better; in order to prevent injury to oneself. Once again, thanks for the great video because I'm training for my first Ultra next year, 2018. Sincerely, Enzo
I live in a prairie province where there are no hills for hours, how do you train for an ultra if everything is flat? Is running an ultra still in my cards?
Andrew F. Brother there is a way! Find a High School or sports stadium with stairs and do repeats on those. Retention basins with steep sides are great for repeats also. An stair stepper or adjustable incline treadmill will help too. As for weights, squats, lunges and kettle bell exercises work well. Keep in mind that when you work out on all these you won't have all the trail obstacles like rocks, roots or off-camber sections that your muscles (glutes, quads, lower back and hips) need to be strong and compliant for will remain a bit weak. Also, do LOTS of core exercises. James Wilson of MTB Strength Training Systems youtube videos are a boon for core exercise ideas. He's a mountain bike strength training coach BUT he has a wealth of info on core strengthening ideas that transfer well into trail running training. I hope this helps. Good luck!!
Think you should open with is you 50K.... on road or off....... (fortunately my 50K was on my 50th birthday on my own on tarmac)... But as I've spoke to Ultra runners I need to get off the tarmac..... - good luck to every one!!!! and the wall at mile 26.2 does not exist !!!
Easy solution for long run scheduling, get up early. I have a family I want to see (sort of) at the weekend. So my really long runs mean up at 3:30, get ready and coffee, drive to the trails, and start at 4:30. Longest runs are 5 hours so back home at 10 or so with the day ahead!

Nice Line
That line is from Greg Lemond, the legendary Tour de France racer.

There is an issue with that Cheat Sheet link in your description (copy&paste didn't work).
Thanks for watching Oleksiy! And thanks for the heads up. It should work now: www.rockcreekrunner.com/cheat-sheet-guide
What? 10-12 mile LR and only 25/30 a week?!
@@salsongs that would be nearly impossible to do without injuring yourself.

Great video man! Thanks for the advice 👍
100 K for 20 hours average ?
That's not runming.
LSD is key.
