How Skateboarding Is Transforming The Lives Of Kenyan Street Youth | SKATE AFRICA Part Two

- So, ladies and gentlemen, if you have not already had the pleasure then allow us to introduce you to George Zuko - a candidate for raddest human in the world today. As with Sandy Alibo in Ghana, George has been a talismanic figure in the development of skateboard culture here in Kenya.
How about this: George is a skater who helps run skate camps at an educational orphanage where the country’s first skatepark resides. Think about that for a moment. Children sleeping on the streets are by no means uncommon in Nairobi, and George introduced us to two young rippers who once slept right by the local skate spot - and started skating as a result. With George’s introduction of skating into their lives, The Keedz (‘the pair’) are off the streets, enrolled in school, and ripping.
Samuel Mwangi and Ezra Nyongesa - everyone calls him Balo, though - proved constant companions for Jaakko Ojanen, Chenai Gwandure, Yann Horowitz and Jackson Pilz as our joy bus spent a week rolling around with the skate scene of Nairobi. Sam even shot Balo’s front board photo from this feature on his first try with a camera. Fast learner!
The Shangilia association which runs the educational orphanage space where the radiant skatepark resides work with hundreds of such children every day. Watch Patrik Wallner’s superb documentary on Jaakko and friends’ skate mission with the local rippers of Nairobi above.

I hope they all get a new skatepark thats open all the time a super modern one. Also the ways of bondo so make spots smooth and mod them. Also i hope good condition boards go their way so they have access to board, trucks,bearings,wheels and shoes. Natural skaters it's amazing how they get the strength to skate from being homeless.

I made some of my best and closest friends through skateboarding. I love to see that although how big it has become and all the money involved and everything, the essence of skateboarding, the love of hitting new tricks and just skating and the tight camaraderie with other skaters regardless of anything else is still there. Unlike many other sports, in skateboarding you start from 0. No amount of push-ups and situps is going to help you in the beginning, you will feel it but its worth it. So inspiring to see the power of skateboarding attracting homies all over the planet.
This is beautiful very humbling i am so fortunate in comparison but it's amazing that skateboarding can give these kids purpose and joy. I especially love the mom who isn't supportive of playing music but is down for skating because it's beneficial to the body haha such a pure perspective

I hate that so many film makers portray the atmosphere of these less fortunate areas as darker and more depressing that they truly are. Nice film/Docu but I still stand by that in which I stated before.

This is so crazy to see. I skateboarded in Kenya in the late '90s and early '00s. Uhuru Park was our favorite spot. And the children living on the streets has always been heartbreaking.

I used to be a skate boarder, now I am an anthropologist. In anthropology we have a term "communitas" which is the formation of a community through shared experience, usually with something difficult. This video, I think demonstrates the concept of communitas.

Its like that all over Africa .retail stores are killing the culture and brands only deal with distributors so by the time it gets in the consumers hands it's been taxed way over cost price and on top of that skate stores have their markup, 3rd party . 1st world countries have it way easy ,and it shows in progression of the athletes and scene.
