Majohn P139 Fountain Pen Review -- Surprising!

- Today, I bring you the very awesome Majohn P139 review, writing sample, and comparison with a surprise unsuspecting competitor. I apologize for saying p136 a few times, and writing p136 once in the review. It is p139.
At the end, I make my recommendation for top 2 best [Chinese] fountain pens for return to school.
I also do a nib swap with Mb 149, to see if it works. What is your guess?

To all the people who comment on the counterfeiting of designs of Chinese pens, I actually have the opposite view. I think it is good for legacy brands and the fountain pen industry as a whole.
i think these pens are "expanding" the market for fountain pens, at an accessible price point for people to get into fountain pens without the price barrier. We gotta remember most people are coming from $5 dollar pens. To then expect them to pay $500-$1000 for a "legacy brand" name pen is crazy. The goal is to expand the market. Once people get these pens and see that they like the experience fountain pens provide, then I believe they see the value in jumping up a tier to your Pilots, MBs etc.
so although counterintuitive, I believe that these pens are actually better for the big brands instead of taking profit away.
Just my view.
This was exactly how my journey went and I now have 7 Montblancs and 7 Pilots which I would have never have bought if I didn't try a cheaper fountain pen initially.
I started with a Jinhao 159 ....the rest is history.
Design patents only last 15 years .. at least it's the case for some countries

Great review as always. Such a treat to be able to watch your reviews and your eclectic collection of grail pens and inexpensive Chinese pens as well. Your experience with high end pens lends credibility to your reviews and opinions on cheaper pens. Hope they expand this model
to some more premium acrylics as in their M800 model.
Thank you kindly! I also hope they can improve on this. I think they can probably make it a bit longer, especially the grip section. I can see some people disliking the grip length - lol ;) --- That kind'a sounded like Quagmire.
My my, China is catching up fast. I still remember when "made in Japan" was laughed at, now look at how things have changed.

Great review. I think anyone who can afford the higher priced pens will buy them. At the same time, it's wonderful that people who are on tighter budgets have the opportunity to enjoy a similar pen that will bring them joy. A win win for all.

Great review Shak. This pen is attracting a lot of attention. I see it as a way of having a bit of the Delta DV Oversize, without the high price.
Props on the review Shak. I almost forgot about this pen until now. I immediately sped over to Ali Express and scooped me up a white #8 in a fine nib. Hyped!

@@Shak-MD Absolutely! I've had it for a couple weeks now, and I love it. The white sparkle material is mesmerizing and the nib writes quite wet. Now, to find a Montblanc, 149 nib unit at a 'reasonable' price! Ha.
Very nice review Shak. I enjoyed the writing experience so much. I could feel the slight difference in your writing with the Pilot CU and the Montblanc 149 nib but as you explained so well they seem about equal. I really wonder about the comparison to the Hemingway how it might be similar but I think -OR- at least I hope it is not similar to the vintage Montblanc 139 with the ebonite feed. Nonetheless you are really tempting me on this one … my resistance may be futile but it’s that CLIP that drives me crazy!!! I love that clip so much. I appreciate your time and effort on this and please keep us informed on your pen thoughts and experiences, very enlightening.

You mentioned in a couple of your videos that you did grind some of your fountain pen nibs to get finer lines. Is it possible to show us how you did that. I have a couple of pens that I would like to do that to.

The P139 is on my list. My favorite in the Jinhao 90xx line is the 9013. I have two and they are very good writers, right up there with pens that cost 50 times as much. I have many expensive pens and they're great writers, but these Chinese fountain pens are what will be kwwping the fountain pen hobby alive because more people can afford them and they are, for the most part, good pens.
I completely agree. I think the 9016 is the perfect size for most people. I have yet to try 9013. 9019 is great, but a bit large for most.
Good review Shak! I have both of these and love them. I agree with you that they write so well I haven't messed with swapping in other #8s. Originally I wanted to try my Bock #8 titanium in it but why mess with a good thing?

I was very impressed and surprised on how good the Extra Fine A1 writes, I recently got one and that pen writes so well, it is a really nice pen, and you can’t beat it for the price. Another thing, I also got the A1 with the intention of putting a Pilot VP nib in it but I really like how the Majohn nib writes that I decided to keep it with its original nib.
I agree on all accounts. They are made very well. I have a pilot ef in my majohn. I also have VP pens, but A2 is metalic and feels more solid in hand.

That nib looks a bit on the dry side, easy to adjust. The pen is attractive. Thanks for the review. I just gave a coworker a Delta Dolce Vita, but I am hanging onto My Dolce Vita Oro which is quite attractive and a bit similar to the pen you are reviewing. Nice job squeezing out some line variation.

The nib may appear drier side. I think the ink has to do with that -both inks are drier. I do like thinner lines :) The MB nib is wetter, despite EEF.
I bought the 139 in white with the extra fine nib - it's arriving today. 🎉

I think I prefer the Majohn nib to the custom Mont Blanc one!

Hi Shak, regarding the school starting season: if someone starts to write with a pen, I would recommend looking at a Lamy Safari, because from my point of view it has a grip section to guide the beginner to grip this pen at the right angle, which can be of advantage. Greetings from Germany, Michael
I absolutely agree with you that for beginners a Lamy Safari or even Preppy would be good choices. I guess I was pre-occupied with people who already have their hands inky, and completely forgot about beginners :) I have one at home, loves Kaweco sport.

Thank you for the tip. I missed the first batch, and I thought it's never coming back. I over paid a bit at etsy coming at 73£ but I didn't have time to find a better deal. Some of the options were already sold out :( so I got the white in fine size 8. Thank God I got some money saved.

Curious as I’m kind of “exhausted” trying, purchasing and testing new pens, I’ve been following your FB posts and your nibs swatching sweeping in those which I’m kind of curious and would love your knowledgeable expertise and feedback if you would mind sharing please.
Hellow fellow Canadian. These pens are better writers in my experience. Asvine V200 is a great pen. There are more nibs available for the asvine.
I personally prefer the writing experience of these out of the box. Beware these pens are quite a bit fatter, which may change one's decision.
Thank you for the review. I am waiting for mine to arrive. I was told by the seller the #8 nib is only available in Fine and Medium. I usually get Extra Fine like you but I am hoping the line is narrow enough for my handwriting. But it seems the line is narrow enough to be acceptable. I like the line variation.
I was told there was a delay due to a shortage of feeds. I was told the feed is made from ebonite.
One question, does the cap post? The barrel seems to be a bit short.

I just purchased this pen, and it is very dry. Can I safely remove the nib to floss it with a brass sheet?
Yes. Just pull out holding with a soft material. Safe to do. .
the nib looks cheap compared to the montblanc. Can you buy a montblanc, substitute the nib beween your china pen and the MB, then return the montblanc with the cheap nib on it?
No, you can't. The 149 housing does not accept the Majohn nib. MB nibs are also very difficult to fake. I can tell a fake 146 from far. I have yet to see a 149 clone nib....
Throughout the video you said "P136" but it is P139. A sign on the video would help make the number right.
I realized that. I did apologize in the video description. But I should.learn hownto add little pop-up signs for correction.
That inside insert was always included in the moonman brand of pens which I believe are made in the same place

I also thought they look similar to the Delta DV Original Mid-Size Fountain Pen which I have been eyeing for quite a while but I just couldn't get my self to purchase since they are quite pricey.
@lhenzbujo1170 I agree. They are so expensive. Hemingway is even crazier. I'm hoping to find a good deal in the Orlando pen show. 😀. I think you'll love this pen, though. TBH, my Delta Montepetra has nothing over this pen in terms of writing... and has a 14k B nib.

@lhenzbujo1170 I am very happy you like it. I just give my fair personal opinion. Sure these pens are semi-ripoff. But they allow many of us through the gates of FP world, who woyld never be able to afford a delta or hemongway. So, I am okay. Enjoy!
Can you put a Jinhao #8 nib into it? Are there more cheap #8 nibs to swap between?
Hi. I am not aware of other good nibs to put in. Jinhao 1935 nib can be put in, but is inferior to the Majohn nib. MB 149 nib fits. I think Wingsung #8 should also fit.

No, that is Jinhao 1935, the nib seems a bit larger to my eye.

I watched all reviews on p139.. all mentioned about them copying. But i am curious why no one mention about copying between Delta Dolce Vitta and Mountblanc Heminway? They purchase the design?
That is a great point. I can not answer the question. However, I appreciate you bringing up the point. I am actually hoping to pick one up in Orlando at the Pen show in September. And maybe the Delta :). Then, I may have more to say.

It works... but Majohn nib is far superior to the p630 #8 nib.
