It is totally obvious to all of the admirers of the WW2 fighters,, that all of the Macchi series had not only a superb aerodinamical design and nice looks, but also the an awesome performance. The designer, senor Mario Castoldi was a genius. For sure. Viva la Italia.!!!

Winkle Brown, the famous test pilot, flew one. Though he praised the 202 as a dog fighter, it was under armed and had an unreliable engine. The 205 was sufficiently armed and the best Italian fighter of the war. The Luftwaffe was interested in it. When they seized Italian airfields in September 1943, they used and attached some 205s to JG 53. Search on google for the images.

The Macchi C.202 "Folgore" had this really aggressive yet elegant lines with its such long nose and the cockpit so set behind the fuselage, it was just plain beautiful. It has been praised by almost all the Italian pilots who flew it and by the rare British pilots who tested it. Too bad for the bad armament and the low numbers of plane produced. Nice video btw!

From what I read these planes were regarded as superior in performance to the Spitfire, Hurricane, and the P-40. It's only downside was its weak armament as it only (2) Breda-SAFAT 12.7mm Machine Guns and (2) Breda-SAFAT 7.7 mm Machine Guns. If it had 20mm cannons instead it would have been a very deadly and formidable fighter in the wars early stages of the war.

I'm re-discovering the Italian Air Force(I want to join it, XD). I'm glad to notice that Italians kicked asses, though most people here think that the Royal Air Force(Regia Aeronatica, lol) wasn't a match for the Allies. Videos like this one make me proud, really :)

The Luftwaffe gun camera footage has been shown many times in Battle of Britain documentaries etc. This clip is 5 years old, before youtube allowed high res video, I'm sure a better quality clip of that particular plane is on here somewhere. The Hurricane has certain distinct features that make it unique when viewed from behind, the thick airfoil, the cant of the landing gear, and the large tyres facing inward; this is most certainly a Hurricane at 2:12.

I do know the Regia Aeronautica used gun cameras; I have seen some guncam footage of MC200's strafing in North Africa, it gives you a look at how inadequate only 2-12.7mm mgs are when moving at high speed and a short time on target, compared to say, P-47s with 8-50. cal.

I´ve read that the Folgore was the best-handling machine equipped with a DB601-engine. More agile and easier on the pilot than the Me-109. Only the firepower was weaker with no cannons.

Late models had 2x 7.7mm (.30cal) in the wings, but it still lacked the firepower of its Allied contemporaries, for example the P40E with 6-.50cals plus 1500lb of bombs.

Actually, Folgore is a rare word for "Thunderbolt". We commonly use "Fulmine". And Veltro shouldn't translated...though it is a small and agile dog used for hunting, "Il Veltro" was an important man prophetized by Dante in his Divina Commedia. We still don't know who he was refering to.

I think the Veltro was well-matched with the Spit Mk.IX. Most publications list higher speeds for the Spit, however, i think the Veltro would at least match the Spit's agility, if not surpass it. I'm guessing that fighting a Veltro would be like flying against a Bf109G2 that could turn like a late-war Spitfire (a lame comparison, i know!). So at some altitude bands where the DB engine gave better performance than did the Merlin, the Spit would be in some trouble.

Good point i can see how you came to that conclusion, but the chances of it being anything except British or Italian are very slim. Dont forget, the Italians attacked northern British costal ports quite heavily during the Battle of Britain whilst on the side of the axis, and also took part in the Malta campaign in which the main defence of the island at the start was Hurricanes.

  • @bevilisio

It looks like an MC200. I doubt it being british, the fuselage is too fat for a spitfire or hurricane. Maybe i am wrong and its just the low resolution is blending part of the wings with the fuselage making it seems that way but also it looks like the prop and engine housing is that of the MC202 being somewhat wider than the front end of the fuselage.

Uhm, how do you know it? It might have been shot down by a MC-200 or MC-202. I can't be sure of it, but...it's probable. The MC-202s could easily handle Hurricanes while the MC-200 performed well against them.
