Thanks for uploading this. Today is my first day using 3D Studio; I did some animation with Lightwave earlier in college, but switched to this because it's free for students :) I was about to fall asleep with the "introduction" videos that Autodesk has. Great to see the software in action.
Okay, so you do this. Make a cylinder. Then make a smaller cylinder cutting through the original one. This represents the hole. Then, select the larger cylinder, go to the Create panel, and in the drop down menu, inside one of the headings, we have a tool called ProBoolean. Click it, and then select the smaller cylinder. You will see that the larger one gets a hole drilled through it, right where the smaller one used to be. :)
Thanks! If what I think you are saying is correct, then after applying the Bend modifier too, you'll have to add segments to the box, which would effectively make the box equivalent to a tube!
Actually, it might be, but these are methods that can be compared anywhere, everytime. I like to stick with one method, which is poly modelling, but spline modelling is just another approach to get the same result :)
Okay, what you can do is, collapse the bend modifier and then attach all of them together in an editable poly. Then Select all vertices and try to weld the ones really close together.. PM me if you have problems :)
In 3d modeling you do stuff you learn yourself if that is the way you've learned it and it's something that works our for you perfectly it's all good i just wanted to tell you or anyone else who didnt know this ;) btw. I like your video btw ;)
Try Mental Ray. It is included with 3ds Max, and I personally have no experience in it, but from the renders I see, I can say it is almost as fascinating as Vray!
@ JCtheChosenone You mean the audio and/or video, or me, do I just say,the wrong things? I'm not hating on your comment, just trying to see what went wrong :)
You could, but in most cases, I try to model s if I will take close-ups. If you use bump maps, I guess this would be possible, but I've noticed that it looks fake even from a normal distance.
Oh right :/ I've realized spline modelling techniques do not come as naturally to me as poly modelling. Although in this case, it would have been extremely useful! Thanks for the tip. Will keep in mind for the future!
@ JCtheChosenone Well technically, you would need at least 3, but to make it snoother, the number depends on the size. Try making a plane, then adding Bend, and then experimenting with the segments, that will give you a feel.
Do you have any videos that show your process for bridging the gaps together? I originally used the tube technique but it isn't working with a normal map. Im thinking I need one object to make this happen.
Nice idea, but a LOT of had work. If you have a demo shot like that with watermark, load into Photoshop and tweak the levels to get a good b/w image and filter out the greys. Then import to Illustrator and use image trace to convert to vector. Export as Illustrator 3.0 format (It's the only one 3DSMAX will recognise), and then extrude the splines into a mesh, - the rest is much the same way as you have done.
I was wondering whether i'll be able to find tutorial of the tire rim you used in your tutorial.. if yes, then pls let me the know link.. will appreciate it.. thank you again! :-)
@ LoLwAaA26032009 Well, that shouldn't be difficult. Just create a thin tube for the diac brake base, then use the proboolean tool to make holes. You could look for a tutorial on ProBoolean on the internet. I don't have access to a PC so I am unable to help any further :( Sorry. But PM me and and as soon as I get a computer, I will reply with full instructions!
only problem with this is that mclaren symbol in the wheel in the end. i don't think there's a single mclaren with a tyre as thin as two of these put side by side.
@ BioChirality This happens to me too. Try changing the axis of rotation.Else, restart 3ds Max. You could also try tracing my steps and then see what doesn't work for you. That way you'll know what went wrong. Best would be to exactly copy my steps, because I experimented a lot, so you can save your time :D Tell me how it turns out.
There is no car modeling without this! So many thanks for it!
Good quality, good explaining, good voice and you dont talk to slow/fast! Just perfect ;)
All in 20 minutes? Very nice details on the tire! Great job!
thank you i enjoyed this tutorial a lot. You are very clear and well spoken. So happy to create something this realistic !!
cheers mate
Dude, your tutorials are fantastic
Your tutorial is so amazing!! I know how difficult it can be… Looking forward to see more tutorials :)

Thanks :) The reason I like your way is because it makes adjustments easier!

Very nice tutorial and it does keeps polygon count rather small in great increase of details
Thanks for the tutorial and the excellent explanation.
thanks a lot, mastering 3ds max became a lot easier.
Thank you very much, I feel I got a rly useful crash course in 3ds Max ^^

Gracias tronco eres un crack makina mastodonte
Oh my bro amazing technology bro !!!
Awesome. Thank you so much. It really helps. Also I very like your tutorial about v-ray, with dodge. I subscribe it.
Excelente video muy bien explicado gracias!
Very useful tutorial
Not bad, nice tutorial for beginners! Only problem without chamfer or smthg groups tire on big renders doesn't looks so good because of sharp edges.
great work!! thank you.
Really appreciate the work.. keep it up.. things seemed easy after watching this tutorial.. thank u for uploading.. :-)
Awesome I adore Your job

A little fast, but definitely helpful. Thanks!
...it's very informative bro! thanks!
liked your video, thanks for the tip on the treads :)
man this is briliant
it was very helpful Thank u
tools> array> rotate> set it to 360> and depending on thread (my own was 70 copies) you set number of thread copies ... thats the other way :)
hi..this is naveen..,the video is really cool..,thank you..,
Try Mental Ray. It is included with 3ds Max, and I personally have no experience in it, but from the renders I see, I can say it is almost as fascinating as Vray!
seriously very useful
Thank you!
Yes, that is correct, but if you try to improve that, the polygons on your tires multiply like crazy.. :D
Great stuff.
very helpfull, thank much guy !

awesome tutorial!!!!
very helpful!!!!! :-)
wow.. very very nice.. thanks for about tutorial :)
best way is to experiment.... you might as well get cool ideas from experiments :) keep it up :P
hahaha Thanks :D :D :D Great tutorials dude! :D Can you make a tutorials on making clothing, or cutains or something like that?
pretty good dear

Thanks for the tut !
thank u pleas more upload
you r very best man
Thank you! Unfortunately, I tried to record that tutorial, but it ended up way too long and boring, so I just decided against it :D
Very interesting tutorial. Have you tried adding a box below the treads before bending instead of using tube?
@ JCtheChosenone Well technically, you would need at least 3, but to make it snoother, the number depends on the size. Try making a plane, then adding Bend, and then experimenting with the segments, that will give you a feel.
good 1 for patterning the whole thing up.tnx
Awesome!! Bro ...
good work!
Well, V-ray is a 3rd-party rendering engine. For this particular tutorial, it actually doesn't matter which renderer you use :)
Glad to know you like it :)

thanks brother... it's cool
what i wanted to make my car! Thanks!
Thanks a lot for sharing your skills ftv. :)
please make a tutorial i don't care if its long and thanks for the video i needed it by the way can i use the models i make in 3ds in unity???
Nice idea, but a LOT of had work.

well done.
Thanks 😉
Thank you!
u are a genius :D
Thanks :) I tend to get carried away, then realize it is long.. Can't cut anything out :D
What about motorcycle tires? For example how would you do street bike tires? They are fairly smooth with some indentation marks.
Thank you so much
Thank you so much dude :)
Thanks Man!
awesome thanks
I don't have V-ray. What material should I use instead?
How many segments do you have in the object that you are trying to bend?
Thanks dude :)
thx for the tutorial, i have one question, how did you select the both axes ?
How did you get your menu buttons to look like that? They look KewL...
Thanks :)
Even after changing the setting in material editor i still have really bad jagged edges, any idea why? Thanks
Well, the tutorial was made in 3ds Max Design, so that's why they look 'white' :)
thank u very so much
I was wondering whether i'll be able to find tutorial of the tire rim you used in your tutorial.. if yes, then pls let me the know link.. will appreciate it.. thank you again! :-)
Need to cross cut some polys before the bend to help sell the curve. Too many flattened tris here.
thanks a lot
i dont have a orange box around my tread its just a line in the mittle so the treads gets fucked up when i try to bend them please help
Is your symmetry in the correct plane?
I fixed it
thanks!

Why don't you use bumps btw? assign a black and white picture of the treads to materials and then tweak with the bumps settings
I already have a tutorial on Cloth Simulation. You can watch that if you want.
thnx man

Nope but it's great for closeup shots of very detailed models :)
HOw did you construct the rim ? extruded?
That is just a completely different way of modelling :)
subscribed tnx bro :D
depends on your material settings an the lod in the bump XD
you do know that your caliper is coming through your rim right...just saying
