I'm using critical realism to inform my research addressing whole person care, specifically spirituality, from clinician and patient perspective for diabetes care.
That’s such a meaningful and important focus - critical realism fits beautifully with understanding the complexities of whole person care. It sounds like a fascinating project!
Using it, informing my qualitative phase of a mixed methods study to understand culture/beliefs and norms behind my quantitative results; really seeing the effects of agency and structure which can be analysed next!
Thanks for sharing how you're applying critical realism in your mixed methods study - it sounds fascinating! Exploring the interplay of agency and structure is such a key part of critical realism and adds depth to understanding your quantitative results. Best of luck with your next analysis phase! - Team Degree Doctor
Thank you! This is a great explanation! The way I understand critical realism is a model of knowing that fits between intellectual certainty and intellectual doubt. Critical because it reveals the problematic motivations of belief and realism because it recognizes the quality of truth within reality. In other words, "I can know things but not in know them in their entirety." Or as you state, understanding what is beneath the surface to make informed observations and decisions. This view of critical realism is based on the thinking of John Polkinghorne and others.
This is such a thoughtful reflection on critical realism, and I love how you’ve captured its balance between certainty and doubt! Polkinghorne's ideas really do highlight the layers of understanding beneath the surface. Thank you for sharing this!
That’s great to hear you’re using critical realism! It can be such a valuable paradigm. Let us know if you have any specific questions - we’re happy to help! - Team Degree Doctor
