Ride hopping during a race for points was just crazy. Brought to a head when Mario drove 3 cars at the Riverside season finale, crashing the wedge turbine with Art Pollard in the other turbine. Glad they put an end to point sharing in the same car.

One of the most stunning upsets in IndyCar history, along with John Paul, Jr at the Michigan 500 in 1983 and Mike Mosley at The Milwaukee Mile in 1981 (CART era), and Jim Guthrie at Phoenix in 1996 and Ed Carpenter at Michigan in 2011 (IRL era).

I don't know what it was with Michigan and IndyCars, but much like Talladega was for many years regarding NASCAR, Michigan seemed to be the place for upset winners and first-timers. Aside from Ronnie Bucknum's win in this race, Billy Vukovich II (1973), Pancho Carter (1981), John Paul, Jr. (1983), Emerson Fittipaldi (1985), Scott Goodyear (1992), and Scott Pruett (1995) all scored first-time victories at Michigan. And Mel Kenyon would also have been on that list if he had not run out of fuel near the end of the race in 1972 that is best known for the crash that cost Merle Bettenhausen one of his arm (Merle's brother Gary also won there in 1970).

I have the official racing program from this race. Bought it on ebay for less than $10 twenty years ago.😊

What speeds were they running this year?

Was wondering the same. Looks to be 1000 mph

@terryatpi just did a little research, pole time was 39.90 seconds, so figure 40 seconds for rounding sake, so at that rate pole speed was just over 180mph
