Great tutorial! I make skirts and dresses for my 3 year old daughter, I'm self taught and I run into issues with my hemming. I will do a lettuce hem or leave it unfinished depending on the fabric. She's a farm girl anyways and everything ends up stained anyways. But I want to learn how to hem better and this is a million times easier than how I was doing it before. Don't ask 😂 thanks I can't wait to try this! I have a bunch of random fabric and I was going to knock out some skirts for her for her birthday in a few weeks!

I have them just to take a few extra minutes to press it before they see and you get such a professional look. Very nice! I just don’t understand why pins are placed horizontal to the sewing, rather than perpendicular. I’ve always placed them horizontally and just run them over with the seam. One bokeh very few needles. This is how I was taught and I don’t know the advantage.. Thank you!, PS. Why not a skirt hem marking thing, you squeeze a bulb with chalk . Are they not made anymore?
Hi Teresa, I tend to place the pins depending on each project on this hem the horizontal helps hold down the area better. Helps prevent the stretching. I rarely sew over pins, I only do that when I'm working with very slippery fabric or velvet. The chalk markers are great I have two of them but I rarely use them. You use them when you are marking uneven hems. This tutorial was just for a basic hem technique. But good idea on the chalk marker, that would be a good video 😀
For my skirt it says to hem inwards 10cm what exactly does this mean? Would i fold the fabric inwards on a 10cm mark and sew that or is it that I fold inwards 10 and then roll it on itself to make a smaller hem? Or am I completely wrong? Please help xx
I think it's saying what most instructions say on how to do it. They want you to fold the tuck under first then the actual measurement. Follow along on the video here. I suggest marking the actual measurement where you want it to finish up on the right side of the fabric turning it inside out, pressing it from the wrong side then tucking and pressing the tuck under, I believe I call it in the video 50/50 tuck. Then you stitch it.
Humm. If it was really delicate or special fabric I would hand sew the hem. The machine stitch is more durable and gives you that topstitched look. Good for more casual clothes.
It's good to practice cutting on woven fabrics first. Cutting on the grainlines helps alot. I have a video here about grainlines that may help. th-cam.com/video/bL2vyarRgoc/w-d-xo.html

Do you not have to finish the raw edge with a serger?
Not if it is going to get tucked into the hem. I use the serger to finish raw edges to keep them from fraying.

Right, linings are best hemmed separately and free from being attached so the skirt can flow.
Raw edges ravel (fray) more easily.

I am so afraid of cutting crooked, a skirt is not square. So when I make my markings with chalk, it doesn't look even.
