Mastic (Greek: Μαστίχα) is a resin obtained from the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus). In pharmacies and nature shops, it is called "Arabic gum" (not to be confused with gum arabic) and "Yemen gum". In Greece, it is known as the "tears of Chios," being traditionally produced on that Greek island, and, like other natural resins, is produced in "tears" or droplets.
Originally a sap, mastic is sun-dried into pieces of brittle,
translucent resin. When chewed, the resin softens and becomes a bright
white and opaque gum. The flavor is bitter at first, but after some
chewing, it releases a refreshing, slightly pine or cedar-like flavor.
The word mastic is derived from the Greek verb, μαστιχειν (mastichein) "to gnash the teeth", which is the source of the English word masticate.[1] The word mastic is a synonym for gum in many languages.
Within the European Union, mastic production in Chios is granted protected designation of origin. The island's mastic production is controlled by a co-operative of medieval villages, collectively known as the 'Mastichochoria' (Μαστιχοχώρια), which is also located in southern Chios. There is even a small Museum of Mastic in the village of Pyrgi.
Traditionally there has also been limited production of mastic on the Çeşme peninsula, on the Turkish coast only eight nautical miles from Chios, with similar ecological conditions suitable for mastic production.[2] The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats TEMA
has been leading a project to protect the native mastic trees and to
plant new ones in Çeşme peninsula to revive viable commercial
production. As part of this project, which is expected to last through
2016, over 3,000 mastic tree saplings were planted between 2008 and
October 2011 to over 368 acres (149 hectares) of dedicated farm land
provided by the Izmir Institute of Technology.[3]
The harvest takes place from the beginning of July to the beginning
of October. First, the area around the tree is cleared and sprinkled
    with inert calcium carbonate.
Then, every 4-5 days, 5-10 incisions are made in the bark of each tree.
The resin flows from the incisions and solidifies on the ground. The
pieces of dry mastic can then be collected for cleaning and eventual
sale. In addition to mastic, mastic oil is also produced.
    Imitations and substitutesThe
rarity of mastic and the difficulty of its production make it
expensive. As a result, imitations in the form of other resins appear in
the market, sold as "mastic," such as Boswellia or gum arabic. Other trees, such as Pistacia palaestina, can also produce a resin similar to mastic. Yet other substances, such as pine tree resin and almond tree resin, are sometimes used in place of mastic.
Mastic has been used as a medicine since antiquity and is still used in traditional folk medicine of the Middle East. In ancient Greece, it was given as a remedy for snakebite. The first-century Greek physician Pedanius Dioscorides mentions the healing properties of mastic in his book De Materia Medica. Hippocrates wrote that the mastic is good for prevention of digestive problems and colds, and Galenus suggested that mastic was useful for bronchitis and for improving the condition of the blood.
Mastic contains antioxidants and also has antibacterial and antifungal properties.[4] A Nottingham University study published in the New England Journal of Medicine claims that mastic can cure peptic ulcers by killing Helicobacter pylori bacteria.[5] Other studies have indicated that mastic has only a modest ability to eliminate H. pylori but have also suggested that refining mastic by removing the polymer poly-β-myrcene may make the active components, particularly isomasticadienolic acid, more available and effective.[6]
One study found that high consumption of Chios mastic powder results
in decreased levels of total serum cholesterol, LDL, total
    cholesterol/HDL ratio, lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein A-1,
apolipoprotein B, ALT, AST, and GGT.[7]
Mastic oil is widely used in the preparation of ointments for skin
disorders and afflictions. In the past, it was also used in the
    manufacture of adhesive bandages.
Dental hygieneMastic may have some value in preventing tooth decay[8] and gingivitis[9]
as well as chewing mastic reduces oral bacteria. In medieval times,
mastic was highly valued by sultans' harems as a breath freshener and a
tooth whitener. In India and Persia, mastic was used to fill dental
    cavities.

I need to admit i am not fan of Elma either. And i am Greek. Well the reason it has this weird flavor it's because it is the original Mastic which they gather from thr inside of trees. Seriously. It comes from the wood of the tree. It's realy healthy but i never eat it :P Someone should warn you for that. The second i saw it i was like "do not eat it. Seriously stay away from it" Not like the classic gum we all know

The gum is flavoured with mastic that's why it has a weird flavour . Mastic is a spice from mastic trees which can only grow in a greek island called Chios. It's an old fashioned gum of Greece but many people still love it's special flavour. 😊😊 hope you enjoyed the rest of the snacks 😊😊

Then I remembered I may have learned that the northern and southern hemispheres have opposite seasons. Lol. I felt rather silly for not remembering that.

Where were that for our taste test?? ( New video in channel. PLUG!) You did well. Greek is a tricky language at times. The gum did the job (as opposed to being stuck to cinema seating.). I try not to study the bags and packaging before I taste something that way I have no idea what the product is and what it's called...hence all the stuff ups : ) Thanks. Hope you are well

Great video really! The sesame honey bar you tried (pasteli) is one of Greece's oldest and most traditional candy. It is ancient, actually, and it is considered a super food. As for the elma gums, they are made from the retina of mastic trees. Now the extraordinary thing about those trees is that they only produce this retina on the island of chios. Many tried to cultivate the trees in other places but nothing happened. Mastic is famous for it's therapeutic properties for irritated or with wounds from acid stomach, preservance of gums and benefits for health in general and is considered to be antiseptic, as well as an expensive spice.

The gum you ate out in some bushes (called mastic trees- you can google it) in Chios and do good in the bloodstream and in many others. Many people go to this island and eating not only the gum but this and many other things that are made from this.

Mastich is a rasin from a tree that grows only in Chios island In small quantities is used in cooking and in bakery as aromatic The gum is a bit strong but the best sweet with mastich is the vanilla or submarine as we call it A white sugary hardish sweet that we spoon it and usually put it in a glass of cold water hence submarine or in greek ipovrihio which you lick like a lollypop and afterwards u drink the water which has now a mastich flavor

Your taste test vids are always better than others, you're so funny :) Those bacon corn snacks are similar to Pork Scratchings in UK & Bacon Fries here in Ireland. I'm thinking the Gum might've been nicotine gum maybe? if the flavour stopped after few chews.

ugh, can't laugh, it hurts. Still sick, hurting from laughing. You amuse me so. You said too much chocolate like it's a bad thing. I love chocolate. if you ever feel like you have too much send it my way. I love it! :D bunch of strange sounds today. Personally I don't recall much of what I heard when I could have died from an asthma attack. But I did see an orange clock ticking away on the ceiling. very strange. I love your taste test as always. And don't sell yourself short. Your taste tests are my fave, you are fun and quirky and show true response.

Hey Tam was great seeing one of your taste has videos a new one those chips that you were trying to guess the flavor if you would've saw on the front of the bag there is a whole bunch of little pieces of bacon so is soon as you were trying to guess what the flavor was I knew it was bacon from front of the bag. The gum that was funny you had me laughing so much so thanks for doing this tease test you made me hungry and started eating and I'm with you on the salty snacks give me a bag and I want to eat the whole bag but I know I can't. I'd like to see you do another taste test from Canada and try some of our different items that we have it would be interesting to see you try some cereals but who knows? Anyways thanks for great video and I'll be waiting for the next.
