So there's a specific procedure when adjusting the contrast/brightness on the CRT. You need to turn the contrast/brightness completely down, turn the 'screen' pot on the flyback up until you see the raster lines, then turn it back down until they JUST disappear, and finally supplement with the contrast/brightness as needed. A lot of CRTs can look immensely better after doing that simple procedure when the contrast/brightness adjustment doesn't seem to quite get the image to where it needs to be.

I always forget to comment it BUT back in the day when I did a lot of pin straightening I got a set of blunt end syringe needles. Had like 15 different diameters and color coded. I could find the perfect one to fit snug over the pin and quickly, and accurately, straighten all the pins on a processor or such without breaking them AND making sure they bent back where they were bent at vs me making a NEW bend somewhere else along the pin.
    Worked perfectly every time.

I love amber monochrome, no groans! As a kid who inherited old PCs, monitors were the high voltage component that was not modularly fixable. I would groan when mine died inevitably. Happy to learn a little about fixing them now that they’ve become as unreplacable again due to scarcity as they were when I couldn’t afford a new one.

I have an Amdek Video-300A that my family used on our Actrix CP/M machine. That screen did suffer burn-in because of the status bar that always showed at the bottom of the screen and was there for 12+ hours per day because I used it for home schooling as well as surfing BBS's in the early to mid 90's. The screen on the Actrix itself didn't have burn in because we kept that screen's brightness at a bare minimum and never used it. The Princeton monochrome monitor on our XT, though, didn't suffer burn-in because dad was always VERY careful to use the blanking feature of our Hercules graphics card. It automatically blanked the screen after 5 minutes of inactivity. Funny enough, we still have them all and they work well (except for the Fast88 card, it smoked something), and maybe when I inherit my parents house I'll be able to set up a small museum of sorts.

Now that's how you pack a CRT for shipping!
I'm still sad about the IBM monitor I bought off eBay as a working unit, but arrived in a box of packing peanuts with the screen facing down and the sound of broken glass rattling inside. I was really lucky though, I posted on a the vintage computer section of a local forum, asking if anyone had one of these monitors, and someone replied that they had one with dead electronics but a (probably) good CRT! Only snag was that they lived in a different state. But again I got lucky that they planned on driving here for their Christmas vacation, so they offered to bring the monitor too! That was actually a couple of years ago, and at the time I was pretty much terrified of playing with CRT electronics, but I'm finally working up the courage.
The other weekend I finally got around to pulling apart the monitor with the working CRT, and I was going to install the electronics from the one with the broken CRT, but I wasn't really sure whether I should also swap the yolks. They're both the same model monitor, so technically it shouldn't be necessary to swap them, but I'm not 100% sure. Now that I think about it, I remember watching one of your old videos where you didn't swap the yolks, and it just resulted in a really distorted picture since the tubes and yolks were different. I think my plan will be to check the resistance and inductance of the windings. If they're close enough then it shouldn't cause any major issues if I don't swap them.
Anyway, I guess this is all a long way of saying thanks for all the CRT videos! They've really helped educate me about how to work on them safely, and helped give me the confidence to take on this kind of thing myself. Don't worry, I'll still be avoiding powering the monitor with the cover off, at least for the initial testing. And I've now got plastic alignment tools to adjust the picture if necessary.
And once again, congratulations on passing 100K subscribers!

Handling CRTs , These things will implode. (Hard vacuum inside) This has probably been mentioned in previous videos but touching the neck of a CRT with a metal instrument in a way that might cause a nick in the glass can cause the neck to fail and violently slam against the back of the face sending glass chips and phosphor everywhere. The face doesn't break because it is safety glass: glass-plastic-glass laminated. Seeing the old b/w CRT brought back memories... Thanks for the video.

  • @evensgrey

I'm trying to recall, and I saw a lot of both green and amber CRTs used in applications where they would get heavy burn-in. For instance, the card catalog terminals when I first entered university (over 30 years ago) had amber monitors. The first place I worked had green monitors for their inventory control system.

You always worry me working on CRTs. Glad you survived another! In pre Windows days switching applications was much less common so I think a lot of these monitors spent most of their time displaying the same application, so if that had a light coloured status bar or menu bar, it was a recipe for burn in.

How ironic/appropriate, when you got the screen at full “white”, and talked about a progress bar being burnt in - it made my own TV show the burn-in for the “progress bar” of the TH-cam playback/scrubber bar (since the playback bar is red, and the amber predominantly uses the red subpixel).

What you're wearing looks like nitrile, 8 mil thick or even thinner, disposable glove. I'm guessing their insulation will break down around 200-250V at the fingertips and maybe go up to max 400V at its thickest point, around the palm. These will be like a paper umbrella in a hailstorm when you're dealing with 15KV and above live voltages and easy 1KV residual.
...but hey, at least they'll keep your hands clean.

Pedantic comment: An analog luma signal on its own is monochrome too, and is not "composite". In fact you shouldn't feed a composite signal to those monitors because they don't have anything to filter out the chroma signal and thus will display it all as luma artifacting in a way that a composite monitor won't. (This is also why they display a luma signal as sharper than a composite monitor will). Which actually leads to an interesting fact...
    .
Later black and white televisions actually had a filter for color broadcasts since all television was broadcast in color at that point. Since the tube was monochrome, they just had a low-pass filter to get rid of as much of the chroma signal as possible, thus making the image blurrier in the process even if you fed it a sharp luma-only signal instead of composite. Luma-only computer monitors did not have this filter since their goal was to display as fine an image as possible.

As the cost of DIY production continues to drop dramatically, I wonder if we will see new CRTs being produced anytime soon. It's those deflection yokes that are the real hurdle. The precision machines that did the windings have all been scuttled long ago. With retro gaming and computing still hanging on and growing while the still existing CRTs slowly disappearing due to age, the demand for these will only grow. The biggest barrier for putting the time, effort, and money into producing new CRTs will be the niche aspect of it. Hopefully the "hobby" keeps growing to a point where it's worth it to someone to begin producing new CRTs, even if for a short time.

I never liked amber screens. In fact I was damn near irrational in my disdain for them. I always found it much much harder to read. That is interesting that they burn in more easily. I have seen some truly wretched amber terminals from my DEC days. My personal VT320 had a white screen. I loved that thing.

Adrian, what are you using to wash your circuit boards? You only mention soapy water in the videos I've been searching through. Is there a specific detergent you use? And if so why?

I actually just use dishwashing soap -- the grease cutting type and warm water. Really don't think it matters as long as you fully wash it off when done.

@@adriansdigitalbasement Thanks a lot Adrian! I thought I remembered you mentioning you use Windex, so I'm glad it's not that as you can't get it in the UK easily. Now to open up my Mac Classic and get cleaning!

Kids these days do not understand how important the CRT was to society and especially to computers. All other display technologies lagged behind for many years. The CRT paved the way for the display technologies we have today.
