I read the book as a teenager ,on holiday one year my dad drove us past the inn i always wished he stopped to go inside . Lovely to see you back on here .
I visited Jamaica Inn back in 1996 on a summer coach trip to Cornwall. It is like stepping back in time and is a wonderful place. I remember there was one spot downstairs that had a bit of a chill about it. Well worth a visit.
I used to live in the outer banks of North Carolina. It was Blackbeard's favourite place. Ive checked out some of the pubs in Penzance and neighbouring areas. It was 👍 great.
Love your videos! So well told and authentic! I'm Scottish but have been to Bodmin moor and Jamaica Inn. On a very spooky, atmospheric foggy day! Brilliant pub. Big but lots of nooks and crannies, lots of atmosphere but saw no ghosts but we were only there for lunch which was fab (although this was in the early 90s). Wish we could have stayed there overnight. I think the Victorian era sparked a lot more interest in the supernatural than previously which could explain why no ghost stories before earliest 20th century. Last point - never that keen on the novel Jamaica Inn although Rebecca is very much in my top 10 favourite books, and I'm in my 60s and read a lot. Very last point 😂Used to love MH until Derek left. Disappointed later to find out how much cheating went on.
Also love how balanced you are, Shane. But ghosts exist. My husband has seen them occasionally and he is the most unfanciful and truthful man I know. One time it was a young woman in our room at the Inn at Lathones in Fife and she was there for a while. I was sleeping🙄
@yvonnehayton6753 I had a call from the lady who runs the paranormal team at the inn this morning. She said there is a lot more history there but some of it can't be told yet. Lol I have my own personal story about Derek from when I did Ghost towns with him.
Shane, that's all very mysterious! You need to come round for supper and tell me everything! It ok, you must bring your wife too. My husband will be there😂
@yvonnehayton6753 I only did the background research for the shows when any shows came to Essex or North Kent area I would get recommended to do the local paranormal history and local history for them.
In the early 90s I stayed at Jamaica Inn with my wife for a Valentines weekend. We stayed in room 4 and during the second night I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet and saw the silhouette of what looked like a man wearing a cape and a tri cornered hat at the bottom of the bed. By the time I had managed to put on the bedside light he was gone. During our stay my wife also complained of something watching her from the bathroom. I had no idea the place was haunted until I flicked thru a book on the last day in the bookshop called “The Ghosts of Jamaica Inn” and I was shocked and glad we were leaving.
Stayed for 3 nights early May 2023. Stayed in the old part, one of the rooms above the bar entrance, can't remember the exact room number. Apparently a hooded figure is seen in the alcove housing the wardrobe. 3 Nights, and not a sausage. I don't believe/disbelieve, but have an open mind. I did have hopes, but not to be. I also stayed out on a bench by the pub sign and the anchor shown at the start of your vid. I waited from daylight, through dusk, to dark. Again no sign, but I tried. All in all the place has 10/10 for atmosphere, and the room was as comfortable as I've ever slept in. Agree about the food. Breakfast was good, but lunch/dinner were only passable, tbh. Worth a visit.
I holidayed in Cornwall a few years ago, and we stopped off there for a drink. It is an interesting place in an atmospheric setting. We didn't experience anything odd, but it was a nice stopping point. I wonder if there was a change in management in 1911, and they wanted to drum up more business so embellished a few local ghost stories? I think these things can become self-perpetuating too. One person reports something, and others then become hyper alert and attribute rational happenings as something supernatural. The inn certainly plays on all that. Still, an interesting story and nice to hear about one you're personally interested in, even if outside of your local area.
@@ShaneRalph77 & Joaanemussons5701 Nothing was spoken out until the late 1980's. I have reports from 1950's onwards, but that was kept quiet. With the mention of ghosts on TV screens and available to the public easily nowadays, you will naturally get more reports, whether they are all true paranormal encounters, is down to the belief of those reporting and accepting them as fact.
I never stayed at Jamaica Inn however I dined there on a number of occasions. I did encounter and evil entity in the form of a great big Macaw in a cage in the main bar. I became too familiar with the old bird and was sternly rebuked by the bar lady warning me that he would have the tip of my finger. I resumed my seat and finished my lunch. I wonder if that old bird is still there?
great storys my dad woudnt go to Canvyon account of its ghosts .They all come from East Grinstead and before thatEdenbridge those stories were told round the fireside ttfn&ty
I have been to this inn and sitting in the bar I did feel as if someone was watching us from the table in the window but there was no one there. We were told that this is very common for people to since this
Maybe the reason sightings were only reported from 1911 onwards is that before that time the ghosts seemed vaguely normal? I suppose depending on the age of the chap on the wall and the exact era of what he was wearing, he may have just looked like an old boy wearing the type of clothes he'd worn when he was young in the late 18th/early 19th century. It's possible he looked like anyother person for decades. And perhaps an increase in tourism had something to do with it? Locals might not have paid any attention to weird stuff after it happened a couple of times, while tourists would, as it was out of the ordinary... That inn looks so cool, I love getting out of the big smoke to visit places like that so one day I'm sure I'll go, and I might even ask for room 5!
@NelsonsAvenger yes you make a good point. Definitely between 1810 and 1870 there are lots of reports in Cornwall so it could of just been run of the mill and bot thought interesting enough to make note of.
We have been to Jamaca Inn Beautiful very cosey loved it How many Ghosts are inside and outside . Surroundings are perfect for Dogman which i believe is real flesh blood Huge Canine .. Thank you I have subscribed to your channel 😅 Yvonne mullion Cornwall England
@yvonnemarshall7416 thank you so much. Actually the second time I have heard about Dogman this week. I got asked if I had read a report about it on Dartmoor.
The ghost is known to stand by the outside wall many have seen him there😮it’s true he haunts they say as he does not like them passing by without popping in perhaps 😮smuggler or early landlord this ghost?some smugglers became landlords building their own pub and settled down for good maybe for an eternity.
Me and the wife have had the pleasure of staying at this wonderful Inn about five times...never seen nor heard a thing....However, one morning I engaged in a conversation with a local who lives in one of the houses opposite the Inn....he asked me about the 'Re-enactment' the previous night...I was confused as there was no 'Re-enactment'...this is what he said...he was walking the Dogs around 12.30am when he noticed a 'Coach' rigged with team of Horses in the yard...two Gentlemen fore and aft in what he thought was costume...fearing I'd missed something that night I asked the proprietor of the Inn ...a Mrs King...she laughed and said they don't that sort of thing and that all staff had left the Inn that night before 12.00 midnight except for reception ...whether I was being made a fool of I don't know?...but the local seemed genuine enough and he was equally confused when I said there was no 'Re-enactment'.
Perhaps it's as simple as somebody says there is a ghost and makes a special thing of it. Everyone wants to go there and their minds having heard all about it then think they seen it. Or the ghosts were asleep but because people started making a thing of them then the ghosts became awake and active. Who knows?

I enjoyed the museum when we went. The gift shop hsd some lovely Cornish biscuits too. Being Cornish I was too tight to go into the overpriced pub.
