  • Picking a gun from a wide array of available options for competition can be daunting, especially in a division that is as diverse as USPSA Production and IDPA Stock Service Pistol (SSP). Steve and Rick talks guns and delves into some of the popular guns that are being used today.
    A Special Thanks to our friends / emanp223 and TJ for loaning us their Production guns.

    lial - Yes, you CAN use a SR9 in Open, but you'll be at a considerable disadvantage to those shooting guns built to the limits of the rules. Open is a division of USPSA, and the SR9 would be legal for every USPSA division except Revolver.

    What's the new hotness in USPSA Production? IDPA SSP?

    IPSC: "No G34 allowed, its competition oriented!!
    Also IPSC: "You want to run a shadow 2?? Go ahead!!"

    6:30: "DA/SA is not a popular action type in any competitive division"? Except for the most popular firearms in IPSC (and USPSA?) production division, that is to say the CZ's and Tanfoglios.

      Remember, this episode is eight years old. I haven't shot a USPSA match in years, but I still don't see many CZs in IDPA, everyone is shooting a striker-fired something.

    Gunnr - Changing the material of the guiderod from that of the stock part is specifically disallowed. For our club matches, we allow laser sights if they remained turned-off, the gun makes weight, and the gun will fit in the box with the sight in place, but you may very well find a match where laser sights are banned as being "lights", which are not allowed.

    What division would my Canik TP9 SFx fall in to? I've heard that it's too tall, with the +2 magazine baseplate. Is it also too long, having a 5.20" bbl? I'm talking about shooting it in the production, or stock division. Or, would I have to move up to the Enhanced division?

      For IDPA, specifically, there is no barrel length limitation, other than the gun must fit in the box, dimensioned 8-3/4" x 6" x 1-5/8". The Glock 34/35 will fit in the box, so I suspect the Canik will, too. If in doubt, and you don't trust published gun dimensions, sketch the box outline on a sheet of paper and see if the gun will fit. The box is the same for ESP. You don't need a +2 basepad for 10rd capacity? Rick

    Sights are "free" in all IDPA divisions, as long as they are of conventional post and notch configuration; dots, night sights, adjustable, fixed, whatever you like.

    If your question is can you use a Ruger SR9 in USPSA Open Division, the answer is yes. You can shoot any gun in Open division. However shooting in Open with that is probably the last thing I'd do. The gun is more competitive in Production. Shooting the SR9 in open division would be similar to showing up at the INDY 500 with a tricycle.

    In IDPA is it legal to cock the hammer manually at the beginning of a stage? I have a CZ 75 which unlike most DA/SA pistols can be carried cocked and locked, but I believe has to start hammer down in SSP. Also, any idea how the HK P7 counts as far as legality for SSP? Seems like it might not fit cleanly into the definition of SA or DA.

    Hey guys, if I want to change out a plastic recoil guide rod for a steel one in my S&W sigma can I still use it in IDPA (SSP)? I also have a rear sight laser from laserlyte. Is that legal? I dont want to use my laser but is the sight still legal for (SSP)? This is my EDC gun. Thanks, Gunnr

    Thanks Rick, as I watched a few more of your videos I saw the one with the (ESP) division .Being that it's a 40 cal. if I changed my guide rod and recoil spring would I qualify for that division or shoud I leave the plastic one in and buy a few extras? I hear they distort and wear out quickly. Thats why I wanted to change to steel.

  • @kimisdaman
    @kimisdaman 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can change to a steel guiderod in ESP. The rulebook has lists of both permitted and disallowed modifications, so it's easy to check, and compare the requirements for the different divisions. You can find the rulebook online at idpadotcom.

    Which production pistol would you recommend for a person with large hands? I've shot a Shadow 2 and a Shadow 1 (with slim aluminium grips) at my local rental range and they both feel kind of smallish... But then I don't know if Tanfoglios are any different and I hear bad things about the trigger on the Tanfoglio 2 out of the box. Some polymer frame guns I've shot have been ok because you can change backstraps and grip panels to make them fit a larger hand. I'm thinking PPQ and H&K P30 in particular. But I feel like you're giving an edge to your competition if you're shooting a striker fired polymer pistol...
    At the moment, I feel like its probably going to be Shadow 2 but I kind of hate the idea of buying a gun that doesn't fit perfectly. The most important thing is the distance to the trigger. Width can obviously be fixed. I've shot a few 2011 style pistols and the CZ tactical sport and they felt great, the TS in particular, but I don't want to go standard major due to ammo cost.

      Don't want to go to a major caliber due to ammo cost, but want a large/fat frame? Tough call. 2011 with skate tape wrapped around the grip would be one of the more expensive options. My first thought was Glock 20 and shoot .40 out of it. From what I understand, Sig P320's come in different girth frames. I shot one that was way too fat for my grip and later saw one with a thinner grip. Might check those out. We shoot with a guy that is 6'8" and has very large hands. He shoots a CZ Tac Sport and a Glock 34/35. Not sure if any of that helped.

      @crockett616 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your answer! Yeah, it pretty much confirms what I thought. I'm going to have to make some sort of a compromise, either accept a less than perfect fit or go with a polymer (and possibly striker fired) gun.

    Wich gun in .40S&W caliber do you guys recommend to start at Production?

    • @L3001USPSA
      @L3001USPSA 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JV Jordão As the 40 guy on the show, I would not recommend shooting 40 in production unless you can reload your own ammo to minor power factor. If you are setup to reload, the gun is really up to you. I would say the Glock 35 is the most versatile gun in the game. You can shoot it in Production, Limited, Limited 10 and even IDPA SSP or ESP. Heck, you could even shoot it in Open if you wanted. If you don't like Glock, check out many other popular guns on the approved production list. XD, M&P, Sig 320, HK VP40, CZ... - Larry

      Thanks for the answer! Beside that, which 40 would you recommend to start in practical shooting?

    • @L3001USPSA
      @L3001USPSA 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JV Jordão As I said, I think the Glock 35 is THE most versatile gun in the game, if you can load ammo specific for each division or sport. If you don't want something that long, the Glock 22 would be my second choice. You can shoot major or minor power factor with the .40 S&W. If you had a 9mm, most division rules do not allow you to load to major power factor, except for open division.

      +JV Jordão My experience with DA/SA is mostly negative; I'd go with a popular striker-fired gun like a Glock, M&P or XD.

      Yes you can, but only the front strap, back strap and sides of the grips as shown in USPSA rule book Appendix E4.
