I saw some comments asking for subtitles. I can't make that happen but I wrote a transcript. Melanie's answers from the interview should be accurate (since I was able to transcribe them from the actual interview). As for Debbie's answers, I hope I'm doing her justice. I had to go off of the German voice-over, which doesn't seem to be a very exact translation. Anyways, it should get the gist of what she's saying. We talk now to a woman who survived THE plane crash in which Melanie Thornton died years ago. This week, exactly 20 years ago, she lost her life. It happened shortly after the singer had released her Christmas song „Wonderful Dream“. This Christmas season her song will constantly be playing everywhere again and maybe you feel the same as I do, that because of this song every year we are reminded of her tragic death. One person who witnessed her final minutes is Debbie St Maarten. She is also a singer and she sat together with Melanie Thornton in that very airplane. Every look into the mirror reminds Deborah St. Maarten of what she went through that day. „It’s never gonna be the same.“ This week, 20 years ago, it happened. The memories of the crash are still fresh. Deborah St. Maarten is one of the passengers of the Crossair flight. The flight that cost Melanie Thornton and 23 more people their lives. Scheveningen, Netherlands, here lives Deborah St Maarten. „Hi! Welcome to my home. Come on in!“ Some items in her apartment are still reminders of her past singing career. In the early 2000s Deborah, also called Debbie, was a member of the well-known girl band Passion Fruit. To this day their hit „The Rigga-Ding-Dong-Song“ is as catchy a tune as ever. „It was really a dream come true for me. We were having so much fun and we were friends instantly.“ At the same time pop star Melanie Thornton was having great success with her Christmas hymn „Wonderful Dream“. Debbie knows Melanie. „Melanie was very humble. She was quiet and nice. She always had a smile on her face. She was a little bit older than us, so she wasn’t as hectic. She was a real professional. She had already her career with „La bouche“ under her belt.“ In the 90s Melanie Thornton was the front woman of the duo „La Bouche“. „Sweet dreams“ and „Be my lover“ were two of their most successful hits. After the Euro Dance era the singer reinvents herself. The song „Wonderful Dream“ was the start to her long-awaited solo career. Saturday, 24th November 2001, in Leipzig, this is Melanie Thornton’s last performance. She opened the concert with her hit „I love how you love me“. Forty thousand people in the audience are cheering for her. In the subsequent interview the singer sounds reflective, as if she had a sort of premonition of what was to come: „We all know that tomorrow is not promised. You know, it’s… We have to give the most that we possibly can from all of our gifts and talents from god and whenever, wherever, enjoy as much as we possibly can.“ Melanie’s biggest wish back then, celebrating Christmas with her family. „I will spend Christmas with my family in Atlanta. After my last show with Coca Cola which is on the 23rd in Nürnberg, I will fly to Atlanta on the 24th which is our Christmas Eve (…) and have a nice Christmas morning on the 25th with my mom, my sister and her family and lots of friends. Just having a great time.“ Melanie won’t get to see her family again. Only a few hours after this interview she steps on board an airplane to Zürich. She needs to head to her next concert. Her band doesn’t fly with her. Sascha Neuhardt (Guitarist): „It was kinda disappointing for us at the time because we enjoyed travelling together.“ Pietro Ramaglia (Drumer): „Normally we would’ve accompanied her…so eventually that saved our lives.“ Also on board the plane, Deborah and her fellow band members. „It was snowing and the airport was relatively empty because it was the last flight of the day. We were tired. It was a relatively relaxed day, nothing special. We went on board. My band and I, we were relatively loud. Our tour manager went to sit in the back because of that. And I still remember telling my girls: Come, we are gonna tease him a bit and go sit with him. So, I sat down next to him and the other two girls were sitting in front of us. Everything was normal and then we took off.“ At 21:06 flight 3597 suddenly vanishes from the radar. Female voice: During the plane’s approach to Zürich, airstrip 28, the plane crashed in a wooded area. „My tour manager and I ordered a drink, that’s the last thing I remember then I fell asleep. Three minutes before the landing I woke up, put on my safety belt and then I doze off. When I woke up again, the plane was already on fire. It all happened very quickly. This all happened three minutes before the landing.“ The weather conditions in Zürich are bad. The pilot pulls too far down, too early. the airplane first touches upon the tree tops, then it crashes. „I passed out because there was a lot of kerosine. Only once we were already on the ground I woke back up again. I was still sitting strapped to my seat. I took off the safety belt, got up and walked out of the plane.“ As if in trance, it seems like a miracle but Deborah remains unharmed (?). Others are not as lucky as her. Male voice: „The crash cost 24 people their lives. Nine people survived miraculously.“ According to the examination report, the pilots were overtired. Human failure, the reason for the crash. Melanie Thornton and Debbie’s band members, Maria and Nathalie, are among the victims of the crash. „Right away I knew that they were gone. I was shouting their names. When they didn’t answer I knew that they were gone.“ Debbie suffered severe burns to her hands and her face. „This finger was burned badly and my palm. This part here was pretty much a hole. The doctors took skin from my side and put it here.“ Deborah is in hospital for eight weeks. To keep on making music after the crash is out of the question for her. „It took me six years to figure out who I am and what else I wanted to do instead of performing.“ Nowadays the 48 year-old is working as a social worker. For nearly twenty years, the 24th November was connected to pain for her until Loki became part of her life this January. „This year for the first time the 24th of November was not a bad day because it’s also Loki’s birthday. He turned one.“ Deborah St Maarten is thankful for her second chance. She enjoys every moment even more. Although the sight in the mirror shows her scars, it reminds her every day of the fact that she got a second chance. „I see my scars, my body, and I’m thankful and I am proud to be here.“ Enjoying life, being thankful, this mindset had Melanie Thornton, too. „We have to give the most that we possibly can from all of our gifts and talents from god and whenever, wherever, enjoy as much as we possibly can.“ With this mindset the singer passed away, at only 34 years of age, much too early but her Christmas hit, „Wonderful Dream“ still makes it into the charts, this year too, and it brings Melanie Thornton back into our memories.
Ruht in Frieden.
Ruht in Frieden, liebe Melanie, Maria & Nathaly...
😉🙋 RIP Melanie Thornton ,Maria and Natalie. I'll never forget you .😢
I'm a 80ies - Kid, and was in the 90ies a Teenager. For me was la Bouche a great Band! I like her Voice so much! I din't know, that Her Name was Melanie Thornton. I realize it today! When she died, I feel so sad. And in my Country she have to died, thats soo crazy for me. She was so Young! I ask me often in the past , if la bouche will start again to sing. But today, I know, she really never come back to sing! I think she had the best voices in Europe. A great singer is gone. R.I.P. la Bouche- Melanie Thornton. And R.I.P. to all the Passangers, who left they lifes in this Plane!
