There are a lot of misconceptions about piano practice routines that keep players stuck practicing in ways that are not effective or efficient.
    Things like:
Spending WAY too much time on scales
    OR
Not knowing how to allocate time to various pieces to ensure you can get results during the practice time

You got my attention when you said “no matter what level you are”. I just play for myself and practice to retain the flow of pieces in my “repertoire” of a few classical pieces learned with a teacher and self-taught pop tunes from all eras. Great tip about taking regular breaks. I tend to lose focus often because I don’t practice for a performance, yet I get frustrated when I cannot play a piece perfectly.

Very useful information, thank you. I see that I need to take more breaks during my practice. So I brought my rebounder into my piano room and am now bouncing on that during my break. Just for a very short time and then take some deep breathes before I go back to practicing. So I'm getting some much needed exercise too, I have signed up for the Piano Practice Lab and am looking forward to it.

If her speaking style is too fast for you, as it is for me, you can go to settings and click on 75 to slow her rapid speech down. Good information in this video and I look forward to trying the little break after 10 minutes.

Always appreciate the great advice and reminders. I usually play for an hour or so each day in chunks of 10-15 minutes and then when I break, I play my trumpet for 10-15 minutes. After 30 min, i take a long break and then repeat. I may play a little long on the keyboards if having fun playing music but always take the breaks so I can play some trumpet. I can't say I always have focus but am going to be thiinking about that now.

Focus is fine for a 1h+ play, if you really care. Study wise it is more 45min with best bet - 25+5min formula of Pomodoro technique.
As bonus it gives you chance to learn or do more things in a day, compared to "until-out-of-gas" approach.

Also good ideas. 10 minutes helps with motivation and inertia because the task is small and seems more manageable. It also forces you to check in before you get stuck in the loop of “playing things over and over again” aka not really “practicing”

I appreciate how you broke this down, but what about repertoire? Where do old pieces fit into your formula? You mentioned that the bulk of the time should be devoted to the new pieces you are working, but eventually they will become the old pieces. I know from my playing that I need to play those pieces at least every other day to keep them in my fingers. Any thoughts to share on this topic? Thank you.

Yes! You can schedule time for old pieces. I mentioned in the video that it’s customizable based on your goals… If one of your goals is to keep up with your old pieces, then that percentage would change slightly and I would say spend 65% of your time on new repertoire, 10% of your time on skill building, and then, perhaps the rest of the time on old pieces. Or something like that, that’s just a suggestion.

You've given me a formula for bettering my focus ... Thank you.
.. I already agree with the break-taking... I loathe to walk away from my keyboard once i've sat down ... fortunately i practice whilst doing the family washing/drying... means i get interrupted by wash/drying machines needing attention intermittently & i AlwayS return to the keyboard with better concentration! - annoyingly a great system :)
