  • In this episode of TFBTV, James evaluates the Chiappa Rhino, the unique, new revolver from the Italian manufacturer. The Rhino, unlike nearly every revolver before, fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder, not the top. Chiappa claims that this drastically reduced felt recoil. James gladly puts this to the test in this review. James runs the 200D, a 2" .357 magnum/.38 special. For a shooting-only montage: • Shooting The Chiappa R...

    I have a Chiappa 200DS, it's my favorite snubbie revolver. I shot well over 1, 000 rounds with no problems whatsoever. The control of the muzzle when shooting 357Mag. feels like shooting a 22Mag.
    And yes, we all know that: a bottom cylinder firing wheelgun called MATEBA was made before... by the same guy who made the Rhino: Emilio Ghisoni

    It doesn't have "a 2-inch barrel", it has a 2 inch wheel AND a 2 inch barrel. So compared to autos, you're getting more barrel length in similar sized guns. The revolver will lose some of it's pressure after the cylinder, but by then, that bullet is already at a pretty high speed. Many more factors to look at, but in short we can state that revolvers shoot at higher speeds than autoloaders. Peace

    I own one, they are great revolvers. Very superior to J-frame revolvers. Also, the design isn't meant to be used two handed or shot at targets farther than 10m. It's meant to be used up close and one handed, hit hard, and not jam in the heat of the moment during a physical struggle.

    Ricochet/bullet fragment impact at 2:46 (technically it's at 47 seconds, the second shot you see after that timestamp). Look in the puddle in the tracks just under his outstretched arms. It makes a splash! Looks like it might be like 90ish degrees off the target maybe 20 feet away. Yay eye protection!

    I don't know why no one ever thought to move the barrel to the bottom of a revolver. the equation for torque is force times distance from the pivot point so obviously lowering the barrel would reduce muzzle climb. I'm surprised no physicist ever said that to any manufacturer.

    There is something I want to say about the information that Ballistics By The Inch does, I missed this the first 100 times I went to their website but if you read the "calibers/cartridge" tab it says "One note: in every case with the T/C Encore the length of the barrel was measured from the end of the barrel back to the breech face. This is how semi-auto pistols are measured, but revolvers are measured as the length of the barrel in front of the cylinder gap. Take this into consideration when comparing calibers using our numbers." this means the revolver calibers are a little off because a revolver would be 2" + the cartridge length (since the cartridge sits outside the barrel) so the 2" Chiappa Rhino would actually be like a 3 1/2" barrel because the cartridge isn't in the barrel itself. It took me forever to realize this. So you actually don't loose much of the benefits of a .357 mag from this revolver

    Is there any chance of getting a review on any the 4", 5", or 6" version? Preferably with both .357 and .38 rounds. The Rhino is such an oblique revolver, it definitely has a "fun factor" associated with it and I am sure many of us would appreciate seeing how the wilder side of their line holds that fun.

  • @desertzuki4182

    It looks like you're using BBTI stats. They measured barrel length as if it were an auto, so for a .357 revolver add ~1.6 for the chamber plus the 2" barrel and you're at what would be roughly 3.5" instead of 2" (on their chart).

    I want that gun, I’ve wanted it for years, I was hoping it would be my first gun, but my girlfriend came into some money and decided since I’ve bought her so many things, she was going to buy me my first gun, and she had moved from the state she lived in to live here and had sold all her guns earlier and some of them where stolen, so she wanted another CCW, and said she would get me my first CCW, and I love revolvers, not to say I don’t like automatics, because I’ve always wanted a Glock too, but other than glocks I love revolvers, but the gun store we went to was local and was having a sale on certain guns, and the rhino was not even sold there, and she gave me a budget of only $300, so I had to choose wisely, and had my eye on a Taurus model 85 .38 special, and it was fairly new with Solid matt black color, the whole gun, the handle was newer than the old model 85 handles, it was solid black and made of rubber with the Taurus head logo on the rubber Handel, so when I saw it in the advertisement paper for the store and it was in the price range I had my eye on it, when I got to the store I found one other gun in my price range and in my caliber range of revolver I was looking for, which was .357 or .38 special, the other gun I found was right at $300, and was made by a company I wasn’t real familiar with, I can’t remember the model number but I can tell you, it was a Rossi .357 revolver, and I loved the caliber, but I didn’t like the size, it was a lot bigger and bulkier, and I wanted something small enough for easy concealed carry, also it only had two color options, which were shiny silver stainless steel, and shiny black stainless steel, atleast I think it was stainless steel, anyway I don’t like shiny gaudy looking guns, and wasn’t familiar with the brand, and on top of all that, even though I wanted a .357 caliber gun for my first CCW revolver, the .38 special was a better caliber to have and learn with as my first gun, because of less recoil and it still being a very effective round, it seemed the best option for my first CCW, not to mention it was on sale for $269, which was a banging price, anyway love your video, may subscribe and kinda was thinking my next gun will be a Glock 26, but when I see the rhino it brings back memories and I want it also, decisions decisions.

      +anon amous right so you are saying that a design that has been around since 2009 isn't tested at this point. Sorry but no, the rhino is at this time fairly well tested, while not a favorite amongst traditionalist, it does very well as a ccw, and defense weapon.
      Truthfully a lot of it just simply comes down to opinion, me I like the lower bore axis, and change in recoil pattern which would allow for faster target acquisition and follow up shots.

    I used a 200DS as my carry gun for 4 years. I just traded it in for a SW 340. I should have done it years ago.
    The Rhino handles recoil like a champ. A hot 357 feels like a mild 38, but that's almost where its advantages stop.
    The sights are useless, not a deal breaker for a carry gun, but I do like to have some decent sights for range days. Using a notch in the cocking lever, that has play in the Rhino, is an idea that the civil war colts did better at.
    The effort to cock into single action will wear your thumb out in a few shots, and was nearly impossible for my S.O.
    The trigger pull in double action was so heavy that my S.O. could not use it at all. I dont like keeping a gun in the house that we both cant use.
    The last straws are that it weighs a ton and is bulky. I found myself grabbing her gun when we went out, rationalizing that only one of us needed to be armed.
    If I had gotten the 6" version, i might have kept it as a range toy. Put a real sight on it, and found a way to tame down that trigger action, and maybe you have a decent gun.

    • @Pharto_Stinkus
      @Pharto_Stinkus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you consider the 2inch rhino heavy and bulky, you need to some pushups. it's one of the slimmest and lightest .357 snubbies made. Based on the things you said about it, I don't believe you've actually handled one.

    I am soooo sick of people thinking that this design is only now being used well NO!
    the first patent/patten (however you spell it) was designed by Mikhail Margolin, back in the late 40's and early 50's (forgot what the actual date was). so the point is that this was done over 60 years ago and I just cannot stand how everyone believes this is new 'tech'. This Style of hand gun design is old, and it still boggles my mind how such a famous firearms designer is fairly obscure in the west.

Funny because the only thing you mentioned that I've actually had to read in order to do is enlist in the military. The rest is pretty straight forward don't you think? Did u do any of your own chrono testing? I respect Ballistics By The Inch and all their research. However, i have seen several chrono tests where the 125 gr Magnum loads are often still getting 1200+ fps in the short barrels, sometimes as high as 1250, which is well above the average 124 gr 9mm at about 1050 fps. There is a loss of course, but it may not be as much as many people think. I guess that reinforces the maxim that you should thoroughly test your specific carry load. Good video. Thank you.

    The Rhino is a 6-shot .357, the J-Frame S&W is a 5-shot .38 - NOT a .357.
    'nuff said ;)
    Your charts at 6:15 - 6:20 are initially mislòeading, because the .357 chart tops out at 1400fps while the 9mm chart only at 700fps. You should have overlaid them to prove your point.
    Good video !

    Honest tip for design:
    If escaping gases are such a problem, why didn’t any engineers there think to have the cylinder seal, load, and unload akin to the nagant series of revolvers?

    • @zevo9314
      @zevo9314 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think that'd just over engineer it and make it even more complicated than it already is. they put a lot of work into just getting it to function out of the bottom barrel. i think a simpler answer would be to have some sort of deflector around the bottom of the chamber to direct gasses away from your thumbs. but i'm not sure how possible or easy that would be either

    • @ColonizerChan
      @ColonizerChan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zevo9314
      if you add a deflector on both sides, the issue is now: 'how am i going to open the cylinder?' since you've basically blocked it off. one could have one be a movable flap, but that could break easier or be too flimsy.
      even then, where would one redirect this? it might be easier to make less head space between the cylinder and barrel. it is still hot gas going somewhere, and that would just make another mess. the best option one could really use is to make less head space, but idk if that would cause:
      less gas to escape, but it comes out faster (this is how bernoulli's eq would work here given the right assumptions. gasses are compressible, but idk if this would compress enough for it to be significant)
      looking at the system, a nagant seal would be too much work to get to work given the little room already there.

    • @zevo9314
      @zevo9314 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ColonizerChan i would think just giving less space would just mean gases come out faster and in a more condensed area, which would be more dangerous to the shooter. you'd definitely have to worry about splitting open your thumb, or worse if that were the case. i'm not sure how much more work would have to go into the gun to make something like a nagant seal, or if theres even room left to do so with all the mechanical parts they had to put in just to make it fire from the bottom cylinder, but hopefully someone will figure it out and make an improvement to a bottom cylinder firing revolver, because its a great concept, it just hasnt had much time and effort into perfecting it.

  • @wompstopm123
    @wompstopm123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    by lowering the place where the bullet comes out they have lowered the center of thrust as the bullet comes out so less recoil in theory
    but they make you hold the gun lower with your thumb so you are lowering your pivot point making the firing from the bottom pointless
    so the gun just looks cool but is functionally not as effective as a regular 357
