    How to grow Blueberry Bushes Part 6 - Follow Up Video on Blueberry Propagation (Rooting Blueberries). In this video I pullout the blueberry flat and fertilize them. I go over how to winterize the rooted blueberry plants for the first winter. The blueberry plant propagation went very well in the mist house. It did not go as well in the humidity box.

    took a few softwood blueberry cuttings today and put them in qt size yogurt cups in a humid dome inside. Looking forward to some new bushes for next season.

    the cuttings in the box look way better than the ones in the fancy chamber.

      That's true. It is hard to believe that that method isn't the best.

      I agree, I would have thought those were molded, with the discolored leaves, and the others were greener/better, but I guess that is where the experience comes in. I probably would have thrown those out. I just threw out my Clematis ones, thinking it was ruined.

    Just wanted to thank you for an excellent series. I followed your directions to the letter, but housed them in a plastic tote from the time of the cutting through the overwintering. I just transplanted the cuttings into larger pots and virtually all the cuttings had a terrific root system on them. Of the 12 cuttings I stuck, 11 are sprouting this spring. Curiously, 2 didn’t have any roots but are budding anyway, and one had one long root sticking out of it. Considering I was going to be happy if 2 or 3 grew, I’m quite ecstatic with 11. Thanks again!

      What zone are you in, and did you drill the holes, like he suggested in the top? I just purchased 2 rabbitteye blueberry bushes...very expensive at $25 each from Home Depot. It's late June, and I think I'll try this, to get a whole bunch more for next year. How often did you water your tub/container, and where did you place it and when? Thanks.

      @HomesteadDIY 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Susan Kirkland I did not drill holes (but probably will this year). Instead I occasionally opened the lid for a while when I remembered to do so. I’m in zone 7a in north east NJ, a few miles outside of NYC. I watered it very rarely because there was always condensation in the tub. It was placed in a somewhat shaded area of my patio out of direct sun for the entirety of the summer and fall, and in the winter I stored it in an unheated shed. And btw, the cuttings are still growing strong and have put on a “lot” of growth. They’re still very small plants in the 4” pots that I transplanted them into, and this fall I’ll transplant them into 1 gallon pots. I did lose one of the cuttings, but the other 10 are still healthy.

    Jim, thanks for doing these videos. Your knowledge is much appreciated. I like your plastic box setup; I'm going to try building one, making sure there is some drainage and will run a 12v computer fan at 5v just to maintain some airflow to keep mold and fungi from taking hold, since we have a lot of that in the NW.

    I’ve never had luck rooting blueberries. Especially when I lived in zone 5. I now live in zone 8 haven’t tried yet. N your little hoop house with the mist though.

    So it is July 5 in hazy hot and humid TN. My leaves are turning brown so I was worried. I guess it's okay. I have them on the covers porch. No sun; but yes light.

  • @JesseKlaus
    @JesseKlaus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Its probably too late but I would try drilling the holes in that box/lid on the sides up towards the top, maybe a couple inches down. That you you still get some ventilation without allowing as much moisture to escape.

    • @onebrightflash
      @onebrightflash 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Plants need CO2 which is heavier than air so putting the holes near the top should be good but not so high that it allows the drying of the condensate that collects at and near the top. I would not drill more than 4 - 1/4 inch holes depending on the average humidity you have in your area.

    Wonderful videos! I want to try the blueberries in the clear tub before I build the mist house. We are in zone 6. If we root in the wood box with the clear plastic lid, how would this overwinter? I have a pole barn that does not get heat, but does have some windows for some sun. What would you recommend if I start these this week? Keep up the good work!

    Hi Jim, I'm confused about the cotton fabric over the top of the flats. Do you mean that you would lay the fabric on top of each flat of blueberries, or would it go on top of the greenhouse?

    Hi. Thanks for the video. I started hardwood blueberry cuttings in February. They just barely have roots now. My plan was to move them to a small bed once the frost danger is over and let them grow all summer there. Will they be established enough with a spring/summer/falls worth of growth to survive in the bed over the winter? I’m in zone 5b-6a

    Although there were fewer survivors in the under-deck simplified humidity chamber (as compared to the misted greenhouse), the survivors look so lush! The 49 surviving greenhouse plants, though more survived, the survivors look rather worse for wear... Are they brown from sunburn? And they look so spindly... Can someone please explain why Jim thinks the ugly ones are so much better? Is it really just about number of survivors? Doesn't it seem like the low-tech under-deck greenhouse (hey, that rhymes!☺️) has produced lusher plants with better root systems--thus leading to healthier plants later on??? Please help, I don't understand! 🥺

    • @alexjordan4590
      @alexjordan4590 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He said it was osmocote fertilizer. However, most people that grow blueberries will use Holly Tone fertilizer (found at all big box stores) slow release as well. Holly Tone does two things, fertilizes and lowers the ph to the sweet spot of 4.5 to 5.5 ph. Oh and holly tone is organic too.

    Do you put them in larger pots in the second year or just plant them directly in your beds? In other words, where do you go from here? Some of my plants (I have about 20) are getting a little long in the tooth, and I"m thinking about replacing them.
    Thank you so much for a very informative video,
