    Yes, often Roman and Greek mythology share the same story with gods being given different names. In terms of this story, it sounds like the Roman story of Hades and Persephone, and Demeter being referred to as Ceres

    My understanding is that the various gods are sort of personifications of different aspects of human existence. So there are ones that represent nature, death, war, love etc. The differences between the Greek and Roman versions are ultimately cultural. For instance, the Romans held the god of war in the highest regard. At the same time, these cultures were aware of each other, so Mars started out as a god of agriculture before the Romans began to model him after Ares, the Greek god of war.

    Ceres is pronounced exactly like the word "series". I know because it also the name of a small town in CA, near Modesto. In fact it's not that far from where you live.
