The cable needed is a USB A Male to USB B Male. I haven't seen that mentioned in any Hot-To videos. I would like to have the capability to update firmware for EAF, Camera, etc via WiFi. That would eliminate the requirement of moving or disassembling the rig to do firmware updates.
hmm not sure - you can do a video and upload it to google drive or dropbox and email support - I'll check mine when I am home and see what it sounds like on soft
A ZWO tech suggested I update my EAF firmware to 3.3.7.... to correct an issue I have with autofocus. He claims the update also will increase the maximum steps from 60k to 600k. Is that possible by just updating firmware?
I have updated my ZWO-EAF firmware. It is now at v3.3.8. It was easy enough for me, a retired software engineer to do, and I didn't need this video. I came here because I was looking for information on what these updates do. I am annoyed on finding any readily available information on what these updates actually DO. Often such updates document the reasons for the update, but ZWO doesn't appear to do so anywhere that I could find. I heard an unofficial "rumor" that I should do the upgrade to extend the range of supported travel of my EAF. I'm using it on a C8, where the focus knob can do about 42 revolutions at 5760 steps per rotation or about 218,000 total, whereas the EAF original firmware is said to be limited to 60000. Does anyone know where the "release notes" for the upgrades are documented or what is the maximum number of steps the EAF supports with the update?
Using the provided USB cable that comes with the EAF. Plug the EAF into the PC / MAC with that - if its a 12V one you need 12V too or just USB for the 5v ones is ok
if your system is working fine then I would not necessarily run out to do it - but there was some improvements that can benefit - there was some fixes to reverse settings etc as well
Thank you for your instructions. When I tried to update, I received the message 'FW File Load error!' ...Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I am using Windows.
if you have no issues then probably you are ok but the firmware does change some behaviours for low temperature use and the reverse switch but if you have no issues right now then its not something you need to rush out and do
@@TeamAstroworkz Thankyou for the video. Is there a way to check the version one has. I looked in the AA+ App (on Ipad) and didn't see a version number for the EAF. From your video, it appears one way is to down load the update app as it does provide the version number after link-up. But I was hoping there would be a way to query this from the AA+ app. Thanks
Many users of EAF will only ever connect via ipad to AAP. Thus to update the firmware it is necessary not only to load the software onto a separate Mac/PC but also to connect this via a cable to the EAF. You fail to describe this full process? Also will the update wipe out all the previous settings from the earlier version? Backlash etc? You do not indicate this?
The reason I’ve updated is because for some reason my EAF hasn’t been as reliable of late, until recently it as performed flawlessly giving me pinpoint stars, last couple of outings it as struggled to do so. Don’t know why. My scope is a Askar FMA300 (recent addition to my arsenal). On my RVO Horizon 72 the same EAF was trouble free. Any thoughts. Ps. I have never messed with the numbers. Ie step sizes/backlash.
Thanks for the tutorial, Simon! It was super easy to update using my Mac; you couldn't have made following the process any easier. Clear skies!
You're welcome!
Thanks for this…didn’t realize i had a newer firmware update available!
No probs
Cheers Simon, same simple process for PC presumably 🤞👍
Yes totally same approach

Thanks. I use a iPad with my AsiarPlus. Can I update this firmware via my iPad?
No sorry has to be via a Mac pc or Linux .. can't do it via iPad
Any idea why the asiair plus buzzer ,when it’s switched to soft, sounds like it is faulty or has that intermittent sound like it’s a bad connection?

Yes 3.3.7 opens up step count max to 600,000
Not a Mac user, to upgrade via a pc does the EAF need to be connected to the pc or ASIAIR device to do the upgrade?
EAF needs to be connected to the Mac

Apologies but how are you connecting to the EAF?

Of course, I actually forgot about it and only remembers the remote/thermo input. 😂Thanks!
Is this update recommended for non ASI Air users too?

I had to download the VS2008 that he mentioned. After I did it worked.
Thank you!
Most welcome
Is it necessary? What does this firmware makes the EAF better? How do I know which firmware version I have?

I had same confusion. While Simon has tried to help, for novices like me I found it hard how EAF was connected for this upgrade.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Save time and go straight to 2:30....blah blah blah 🤪🤪🤪
agree. simon is very helpful but he shd avoid technical jaargons that are not necessary for context
I have never updated the firmware on any of my EAF’s, would you recommend doing so.
unless you have an issue or need to get to the extended step sizes ... I'd keep it as you are - no need to unless you have a specific need
