I lost power last Sat for 5 days, (ice storm in SE MO) I had my Mr Buddy ready, i have filters, adaptable hose, etc. I took off the front grate, if you flip it around, then you can secure the corners of the grate to the handle that is on the heater, then you can set a pan, pot on that grate and cook. I made stir fry vegetables and a filet mignon. I'm living the good life, especially for someone who has no elec.
I put mine on a big piece of slate and got some bricks in front of and to the side of it and it radiates a lot more heat that would have just floated off. Just gotta be careful they don't get too hot and melt the floor haha. I did the grate flip thing too and made teriyaki steak tips in foil with veggies. Came out alright
I'm in Warrenton Mo & still snowed in. My neighbor's jacked their SUV up trying to get out this morning. I can't imagine how much it's gonna cost to fix it . Tire shreds all over, jacked the back yard up too
Regardless of what type of heater you use indoors (other than electric), please be sure you have an operating carbon monoxide detector in the occupied area!
I have my camp stove I'm burning wood in right now. As of Jan 1, 2025, electric went up. No sense paying for electric when burning wood is free heat. I live in the woods on 10 acres. Endless supply of heat.
I welded up a mini fire stove that I designed to burn for 5 hrs on just 3 split pieces of wood that are about 10 inches long. It keeps the old shed nice and toasty. -DirtySouthPrepper
Off-grid heating isn't just about the fuel-it's about having redundancy. Wood stoves, passive solar, kerosene, and even geothermal setups all have their place. If you're relying on just one, you're asking for trouble when it matters most.
The propane heaters are great as long as you can easily get propane. I worry when the grid goes down or some other SHTF, you may not be able to get propane or kerosene or even gasoline.
True, but for regular emergencies like storms they’re great to have … that being said I also keep another alternative heat source with fuel stored as well … if it all goes bye bye anyone left alive will be burning wood till they die anyway …
I was so nervous the first time I lit one of these at work. Super old unit, no instructions, no explanation. Thought I might flood the tent with propane then ignite the whole thing. I exhaled deeply before pressing the ignition button to avoid having gas in my lungs during the fireball I was expecting, images of everyone teasing me forever after for lighting myself on fire flashing before my eyes, haha. It was fine and forever after I was the guy who showed others how to use them.
Cords of Wood and large propane tanks work well off the grid. Use wood as a primary heat source and propane as a backup. If things get bad and we can't go outside to get wood, large propane tanks can go for months.
I was in a 3 car garage with some friends with a prooane radiant heater going. It had only bren running about 5 min when i felt the first signs of C02 poisoning hitting me! Once you have had severe C02 poisoning and almost died from it you now are extremely sensitive to it! My arms began to geel rubbery and the dull headache with fuzzyness and beginning of blurred vission. I yelled open the doors and no one understood why i was yelling but the home owner opened the overhead door (the walk through door had been opened partially but it wasnt enough. The problem is when CO2 hits you you litterally only have seconds to get to fresh air or you will find yourself crawling with what little strength you have left to get out a door!
I’ve burned propane in my stove/range for years. Propane should burn clean making just heat, light, CO2, and water vapor. If you’re getting CO it’s not getting enough O2 for some reason.
I stayed alive in a slide in the back of your truck camper with a different brand .the one I have takes two 1lb tanks . And a adapter house for 20 lbs . I changed the fitting on the hose to except 100 pound tank . On 4000 btu’s and my window cracked it kept me and my cat cozy . 5.5 months in a winter storm 3 winters ago in Missouri. The bunk bed window where I slept was open with a tarp over my roof . So the gas never got me and the tank was outside in case it was letting off any gas .
Keep every green 1lb canister you ever bought. Buy the $12 adapter to refill your own lil guys with your regular grill tanks when the price is less in the summer
Here, it cost $18.99... but one tank, refilling the littles, it pays for itself. Right now, its literally $5-6/lb, vs $1/lb in the big tank. Just do it outside. Dont smoke. And make sure is well ventillated area. Stay safe and you can save a ton. Btw... as long as they arent rusted, and you dont tear up the valve causing a leak, you can re-use all of the tanks indefinitely
Yep it’s definitely Winter time people! I grew up in New England and the Winters were always bad like they are now! There is no difference people! Again, it’s Winter time and Thank goodness for the snow to help fill all the reservoirs!
I have two different size Mr. Buddy heaters. Our area is prone to tornadoes in early winter, major winter storms and power outages caused by ice. They have been a lifesaver. Anybody that gets them needs to make sure they get the filter for the gas line when using a 20 pound tank to help make sure there’s no moisture. Another excellent idea is to get a fan that runs off of heat coming from the heater. They are very affordable and they circulate the air
I have a Mr Heater "Buddy". I bought a painters grid and hooked underneath the carrying handle so it lays flat, then put a wood stove fan on top of it! Makes a huge difference blowing the hot air out into your space!
Thanks again Nathan. I've got 2 Big Buddy 's .Both have issues. 1 has an electrical problem with the fan , the other has fuel delivery problems. But at least they still work. Both r about 8 years old .
I just received mine last week, to prepare for the last snow/ice storm. I DID read the directions but have not tried to light yet. Thank you for showing us how to use.
CO detectors are so important with this stuff, most people have no idea. Ive managed to discover multiple ways to do this all wrong and produce massive CO. Always use battery operated detectors for generators, heaters etc
7 years ago in an upper Michigan un-insulated shed cabin mid December I ran a Big Buddy heater 16 hours a day on lowest setting for 6 days. Wasn't hot nor over heated just right. Was wearing my longhandles and hunting clothes. Rough part was taking a shower outside with lukewarm water. Quick shower indeed. Best
Have an 11,000 BTU Buddy Flex, a connector hose with two 20lb propane tanks in the shed, and a little connector hose from the Flex to my Coleman grill. Cool little emergency heat/cook setup.
You need to get a propane oil filter if you will be using the large tanks. Because the pressure in the tank will force oil out the hose and it will clog the heater.
@ actually that’s not true. There’s a guy on TH-cam that has one and didn’t use a filter and got he’s heater clogged. He made a video about it and he had to take apart the heater to get it fixed. Plus I rather be safe than sorry.
General idea if you cannot open window/ventilate be that a room filled of candles or propane going is no more than 4 hours then take a break if there is stuff going on outside or in small area to keep warm keep that in mind.
There is a filter to put on the hose for the 20 lb propane tanks hook up . There is oil that can pug up the Mr Buddy heaters and the filter stops the oil from pugging it up. There is oil comes from the hose not the propane tank
Many of the hoses aren't designed to well and they leach oils from the hoses, the little screw in filters are worth using, I have hoses, filters, a refill system along with 3 full new 20 gallon propane tanks, probably 35 of the green 1 lb. Canisters, 3 new single canister Mr. Buddy heaters , a new 2 burner Coleman camp stove and a rocket stove with plenty of wood! I learned my lesson in 2021! Went 7 days without power on North Tx. I thought I was going to die! Couldn't go anywhere because I was iced in, didn't stock up on food goods, and didn't have proper warm clothing! NEVER AGAIN! and I'm still prepping on top of my prepping! 👍
@ Heck yea , I’m in western New York . Two lake effect snow storms came in with my furnace down . Wait a month for a new one to come in . I used my buddy heater and my supplies to get through Nov . Glad to read you’re on top of the plan now for the next event.
almost froze to death in a tent in only one night temps were only around 30F I was dressed well and in a sleeping bag but my feet were blocks of ice by the morning. the mistake I made was to sleep in the tent rather than the cab of my truck. I greatly underestimated the cold weather threat.
I don't know what you call a sleeping bag but you should be able to comfortably sleep in a sleeping bag at 30 degrees. Done snowshoeing trips abd stayed in temps near zero degrees Fahrenheit. Buy a good rectangular sleeping bag and then put a good mummy bag in that one. Also a closed cell foam mat under you. If you are a real freeze baby put heat packs in with you. Also probably not a great idea to sleep naked. At least wear a winter hat
I have one of the Mr. Buddy heaters and running it on the low setting it will keep an 8x10 wall tent around 45-50F overnight when it's below 32 outside. The 20# propane tank will last about a full week like that so plan accordingly.
Wave 3 catalytic heater sips the propane and no open flame. Buddy heater heats up to fast and even on low you still have to turn it off and relight again a short time later. Wave 3 I run 24 7 using a fraction of the propane that the Buddy heater does and peace of mind with the no open flame I can leave it running for hours on end confidential.
In-line filters should have been mentioned especially if you purchase an extended hose. Without the filter the heater could become clogged from the oils in the hose.
yes and if you use cheap Chinese knock off hoses, the high pressure of the system will pull oils from the hose and clog your heater. Lots of videos on this
Picked up my lil Buddy years ago. Forced to use it when the furnace crapped out. When its -24C / -10F the house cools very quickly. 8 hrs later heating guy change out my circuit board on the furnace and back up to speed. Better to have then want!!! Dont put off get a propane heater!
Feels good to have the right equipment, especially an alternate heat source. In my area, it can take a few days or more to get a new part for a furnace, that is if you can get a furnace guy at all because wouldn't you know it, they are busiest when it is coldest.
I bought a propane heater ( not a heat hog, the other guy) two years ago, mostly because I've been watching your videos for a couple of years. That heater kept the largest room in my home very comfortable during a 48hr power outage. We used the lowest setting, and barely any fuel. Also kept a CO detector nearby.
Just make sure you ventilate when using propane runned heaters. My family works in the RV business and work with propane daily. So they can be used indoor. Includes garage, tent. Always ventilate! Be safe and warm. Are 5 gallon works for 20 hrs and a 7 gallon for about 25 hrs.
Nothing compares to a wood stove because it will never run out of fuel. A diesel heater can run on vegetable oil and used oil too especially if mixed with a little bit of diesel or gas or kerosene. I have 8 years old diesel in my Kubota generator. Still works strong. That buddy heater thing is easy to use but would be my last choice.
My furnace went out on New Year’s Eve, it was -28c. Have 3 portable electric heaters, 2 buddy propane heaters, and a Napoleon gas stove in basement, which requires no electricity. It took 3 days to get new board, house never got colder than 18c. Very eye opening experience, and frightening to imagine a complete grid down situation.
I bought a solid steel rocket stove. I tried something to get it, started faster and easier, and it works. I own an extremely high btu weed burner with a self igniter. I put the wood in it. I used the weed burner to heat up the chimney. Then. To start the wood to burn. It took around a minute. My rocket stove is hard to get going because of it being made out of steel. My stove is too heavy for backpacks. A vehicle or at home use.
Propane only emits carbon Monoxide if the heater is not burning the fuel correctly. It that happens you need to turn the heater off and service the heater.
I live in northern MN .. off grid.. I’m using my buddy heater every day and refill my one lb tanks .. the heater is on right now as I’m watching this and I put the tank on four hours ago .. also I’m a big fan .. your my most watched videos
Propane was the way to go last year. And we have our MR Buddy, however now as I’m in an old house; kerosene is king! Love the kerosene heater because it’s SILENT.
I can vouch for the design durability. You want a clean, consistent looking glow on the burner. If it's acting like it's choked then the tank is frozen or its low. Dont run it like that.
I always shut the tank valve off if it's well below freezing and I go out for a while. I'm not sure if the lines freeze or what but there's some kind of problem with my other brand heater if I don't do that. I use a similar product a lot and those things are a life saver for sure. One last tip if you can find a big piece of slate or other flat rock to put it on and a few large rocks or bricks kind of in a V shape in front of and to the side of it you got a hearth which keeps things nice and toasty.
I have a mr heater catalitic heater, a carosene heater, and a wood stove that I could set up and vent out a window. But first I can run my house heater with my solar generator which is the most efficient heat source. And then I can charge my solar generator with my solar panels during the day (assuming there is sun showing) or run a dual fuel generator and charge it up.
I got a wood stove with an adapter kit to put the piping out the window. Funny enough, after I'd done that, I seen you make a video about it. I find that preferable to the heater. As well, I can pack this thing up and bring it with me if we gotta get out.

Hey Canadian Prepper you said you were looking for small prepper channels to watch but couldn't find any. One came up in my line up last night. Personally, I don't think the guy has thought things through and I wouldn't take his advice but here you go. Simple Prepper
I just got a Mr Heater single stage and it would definitely help keep it warm, now they won’t heat up a whole house or trailer but if you have it in a room it will heat the room up good but definitely leave the door open!

Absolutely crazy Nate your videos where you predict the end of the world do so well and the videos are actually useful.
You may want to put a filter on the hose. Were it connects to the heater. Helps keep trash from tank or hose. Helps heater last longer

I have a small kerosene heater that Ive heard can run on diesel and fuel injector cleaner Im sure that will come in handy.
Excellent report 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Mine arrived about 5 days ago and the tanks 2 days ago!👍
Thank you Nate
Just make sure you ventilate when using propane runned heaters. My family works in the RV business and work with propane daily. So they can be used indoor. Includes garage, tent. Always ventilate! Be safe and warm. Are 5 gallon works for 20 hrs and a 7 gallon for about 25 hrs.
Wood stoves.. I remember the winter when we burnt the billiard table for firewood
Thanks, Nate, for the GREAT reminder. Having a 2nd way for heat and to cook is crucial!! That's why I have 3 ways. 😉 God bless!!!🙏❤️🙏
Thanks, Nate
Lots of people I know use those heater that saves lives as long as you use it right.
Thanks, Nate! Within the last week, it’s snowed quite a bit here & love having this as a backup option. Great presentation!
On the west coast of BC, not one snow flake as of yet, rain.
Pair it with a peltier powered fan on top and you get more heat circulation also you can feel the heat from further away.
You should do a show on Portable diesel heaters
Thanks Nate! Just bought one!
Great options 💕
I've always read do not use indoors because propane is poisonous.
Propane only emits carbon Monoxide if the heater is not burning the fuel correctly. It that happens you need to turn the heater off and service the heater.
Winnipeg canada, Was fucked today.... A witer storm made me realize how vulnerable we are... thank you for your videos
I live in northern MN .. off grid.. I’m using my buddy heater every day and refill my one lb tanks .. the heater is on right now as I’m watching this and I put the tank on four hours ago .. also I’m a big fan .. your my most watched videos
Highly recommend a Kelly kettle unlimited free fuel everywhere and boiling water for tea and coffee and hot water bottles
That's freaking awesome that you used bubbles and Lahey for the propane part🤣🤣
Propane was the way to go last year. And we have our MR Buddy, however now as I’m in an old house; kerosene is king! Love the kerosene heater because it’s SILENT.
Where I am in South Africa we are blessed to get by in summer without aircon and not needing heating in winter.
To have the propane & living in an apartment, we can't use it. We can't store it indoors either. Thanks for sharing, all the info & the caption.
Thank you. I’ve been trying to get an answer to that for quite awhile.
So what should we use in our situation?

Good points.
Time to retake your own authority
I have a mr heater catalitic heater, a carosene heater, and a wood stove that I could set up and vent out a window. But first I can run my house heater with my solar generator which is the most efficient heat source. And then I can charge my solar generator with my solar panels during the day (assuming there is sun showing) or run a dual fuel generator and charge it up.
20lb or more tanks with the conversion hose is the way to go.
It has its place, but diesel heaters are far superior.
I got a diesel heater, propane, wood, and pellet stove. Diesel heater is one of my favorites...
Diesel heater makes nice dry heat. Buddy heater makes everything wet
Pellets are great but the pellets are going to be hard to find when the grid goes down.
Diesel heaters work great and can buy a cheap one for $160 to 180 and can last a long time before replacing
Propane tanks never go bad.

Electric generator is best. Run it outside and get energy through cable😊
I grabbed a Big Buddy heater after the pandemic off of a family that used it twice outdoors for when visitors stopped by. Best $50. I've spent.
