    221,000 miles and still going strong. Got this car when I was 17, so as you can imagine it took a hell of a beating before I started caring about it. Original clutch too!

      1.8 t is GREAT PIECE OF SHIT .a lot problems with that disaster engine .With vacum ,with belt ,with lifters ,with chain tensioner ,with oil sludge .
      Everybody who owned that shit goes into mechanics nightmare .😏😏😏
      That is a true !

    You got some good points here but I think these are very reliable engines with normal maintenance, I've seen these with over 500 000 kilometers. My ex A4 with 1.8 non turbo (same engine almost) had 350 thousand and still going well

    Hey man. Ive got a 1.8t with 220k miles on it with a 250hp tune running 24psi boost for the last 50k miles and I beat the snot out of it regularly. A lot of preventative maintenance has been done, but the head has never been off and the bearings dont make noise. Timing belt and crappy plastic vaned water pump kills these if you don't do the maintenance. The engine takes a SOLID hammering to 6500 with all those miles. Sometimes the tchain and tensioner between the cams gets worn and scrapes the valve cover around 180k but that is a cheap and easy fix. I was never a vw guy but it is probably the best engine made over the past 25 years. Same engine family for like 70 years.

    9 times out of 10 when something is broken on a 1.8T its always rubber/plastic/vacuum related. There are plenty of delete kits out there and replacement hoses, spending a weekend or two replacing all the hoses massively improves their reliability and makes them basically bulletproof, planning to do mine to ease my mind. The only other issue is that people dont change the oil frequently enough and they run super hot so they sludge up and have an oil pump failure or run like shit until they wear out. 10k intervals are the perfect way to kill these. 5k minimum but 4k is better. Mine is only at 120k and i had my fair share of problems thanks to previous owner but its been trouble free since i sorted them. They are a good engine if you know what you sre doing and you take care of it. They are very rewarding to drive. Not to mention they are a pretty flexible platform. Variety of vag/audi stuff can be fit to these or made to fit from different coils and turbos all the way to DSG's from newer cars. There is a reason why people love these. Had my fair share of ups and downs with it and even with all of its issues you cant really find another car with an engine for this money that runs as smooth and powerful as these. Not to mention okay fuel economy.

    my MK4 Gti has 220K miles and running strong. Light weight pulleys, lightweight flywheel, New water-pump and Kevlar timing belt. Got the APR stage one chipped and Blue-line suspension. Fast fun and can go very fast lets just say autobahn style not quarter mile kinda fast but can get some good top speed and handling.

    Things tend to wrong with these engines simply because they are old now. Wear and tear thing. Nothing internal will go wrong.... as long as the oil, coolant and timing gear is good then your good.

  • @MrSagerific95
    @MrSagerific95 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Literally one of the best 4 cylinder engines ever made. The EMISSIONS systems are over complicated I agree. Once they no longer have to be emissions tested delete the SAI, EGR, and the other emissions systems and you’ll have a simple, powerful turbo 4 cylinder that gets 30mpg and is very easy to make 300+hp out of. The engine itself is very strong, built with forged internals from the factory that can hold up to 500hp, many TH-camrs and forum members confirmed.

      Was there a point to these statements. You do not buy a VW for reliability cut the bullshit. VW has had a low to mid reliability rating forever which is sad when Audi and Porsche consistently get much higher ratings. Fun to drive, yep. Relatively cheap maintenance with a few future proofing mods, yep. But please stop with the 200k miles and blah blah unless it’s a TDI!!, when the timing belts on 1.8t were snapping at 60k following VW’s 100k mile schedule VW did not say my bad here’s a new engine nope they said try and change them 75k miles instead. care to mention how the timing chain guides on the VR6 fail long before 100k miles yet the chain itself is usually maintenance free. The every car has issues is nonsense and purely denial from fanboys who accept poor quality as the norm. VW was not always this way but they have had plenty of black marks in their history, Reliability is just one of them.

    One very common issue is definitely the PCV valve.They..VW..put shitty sub par valves on this model.It's just a simple plastic breather type valve that eventually sticks.If you notice you're having to but a quart of oil in every few weeks and or the oil gets dirty quickly after oil change.It's more than likely the PCV.I got a Billet aluminum one,that I ordered thur 03 motorsports.It cost 38 bucks but damn it works great!

    All correct places of failure. Thanks for showing them all on an engine out of a vehicle. The good thing is, you can change all those pathetic hoses with much better reinforced ones. Custom made if needed. I'm going to be doing that soon as I get some oil vapor smell, definitely from some of the hoses you showed here. Those engines run especially hot in a very cramped space both not helping the hoses at all. lol

    If there is no code on the head it does NOT mean the head has been "gone through". A good deal of late model AWP engines didn't have the code stamped there due to machinery failure at the factory.

    I’ve had every one of these problems on my 2001 1.8t Jetta. I bought it brand new and within the first 9 months of ownership it was back at the dealer 3 times with different warranty issues. I still have it and drive it nearly every day but I’m unlikely to buy another VW because of the stupid problems and total lack of maintenance planning by the designers. In fact, the dealer where I bought it offered a “free oil changes for life” program and I regularly took it to them for oil changes because, well, it was free. Eventually they “phased out” the program by making appointments extremely hard to get and very long (like 3 hours for an oil change) so people stopped going. Only after years of dealership changes did I start doing my own again and discovered that the entire bottom of the engine is covered by a two piece shroud. To access the oil filter they both have to come off. Thing is, the dealer tossed the aft shroud sometime over the years and never told me. Presumably because it’s such a pain in the butt to disassemble the car to do some basic maintenance. Removing the plugs also has multiple layers of unnecessary brackets and sensors covering them to remove that could have easily been put elsewhere. I also own a Honda and can change the oil filter without getting under the car. And it doesn’t drool oil all over the power steering hoses like the VW. Consider me unimpressed by the VW.

    I Love my MK4 golf but the location of some of the parts is infuriating they have many things in hard to reach areas and a lot of little things always go out, even with proper maintenance, speaking from experience, so they're a little pricey in the long run but otherwise great cars.

    @rudolfhuijs4526 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    My Passat B5.5 now on 174,000 km and running strong. Yeah sure hoses and plastic pieces deteriorate, crack or wear. But as in any car you have to give maintenance and follow the recommended mileage. Some parts really go well beyond the supposed manufacturer service life, others break earlier, like diverter valve, pressure recirculating valve, bleeder valve, jet suction pump and secondary air pump. I may not say this, but I haven't changed the timing belt, it's the original from factory still running. Change engine oil before what the book says and in those turbo engines, better be synthetic oil to avoid sludge. As I said, everything goes to prevention. If you act over correction, well then the engine and car is doomed.

  • @Noneoftheabuv

    The problem with this engine….. ECU!!!! it’s way too sensitive for the engine. The ecu is built as if the vehicle will be driven indoors!!! The way they calibrated the ECU was ridiculous…. It tells the vehicle to commit suicide with certain issues and other issues it tells the engine to run harder…. The ECU was built for one of those mini cars for kids… but they never put them on….

    Yeah I don't agree these engines are fairly reliable tbh very good to tune and i have seat with auq engine at 180,000 and it is absolutely solid, alor of the time when people always say certain cars are unreliable it's myths it's just cos people say it then people ear people say then they keep saying it when most of time never even had one, same with fiats I admit small engine fiats are pretty weak but fast fiats 2.0 16v turbo 2.0 20v 5 cylinder turbo. 1.8 16v fiat engines are genuinely some of the fastest and most reliable engines iv ever had and seriously serious fast . And good to tune fiat 90s engines wow! And pre 90s and modern ones to, fiat own Ferrari Alfa Romeo lancia and the rest, they've been one of the best car companies in history and made some of the best rally cars in history.. and same with a lot of other cars that people call unreliable and I know that rant don't mean much cos you probably didn't get them fiats in America lol Probably just Europe but if that's the case, that's why fiat is underestimated so much cos people have never experienced a proper fast fiat.. unreal fast..

    This guy knows shit about the 1.8L AWP engine. I have this engine with 150,000 miles on it with a stage 1 plus tune and it just hums along. Regular oil changes (Synthetic 0W-40 only), a good catch can so you're not blowing oil saturated air back into the intake and timing belt replaced every 50K miles. Sure, I've replaced various hoses, thermostats, but it is a great engine.

    (By the way, this cheating and lying business is legal over here, which is why they can advertise and sell a car with "4.5l/100km" while when driving it, you will never get it below 6.5l/100km. It's all because in Europe, they paid for the laws to allow them to lie.)

    I got that stupid PO411 secondary air pump code... Stupid piece of plastic shit lol, what could be the problem? Is it the pump itself or is it a hose leak? I think i hear it on cold starts. But on cold starts the engine sounds kinda rough and i hear buzzing
